Metals

Explain why many metallic materials exhibit strain hardening? Does a strain hardening mechanism depend on grain size? Does it depend on dislocation density?

Metals do not require the charge balance requirement, so strengthening by strain hardening is obvious for metals. Strain hardening is dependent on grain size, smaller grains with higher grain boundary area can prevent dislocation motion, thereby strengthening the mater. As strain hardening increases, so does dislocation density.
