Grace Hopper (1906-1992)

An American computer scientist who, most notably, is given credit for inventing the first computer compiler and helping to popularize machine independent programming. She was also significant in the creation of COBOL and popularized the term "debugging"(from having to remove actual bugs from the first computers) in CS. She was also one of the first programmers on the Harvard Mark I.

Herman Hollerith (1860-1929)

Applied the concept of representing information as holes in paper cards to speed up the tabulation process in the 1890 US census. Company founded Tabulating Machine Company later became the IBM known as the International Business Machines Corporation

Charles Babbage (1791-1871)

known as the father of the computer, he invented the first automatic mechanical computer known as the difference engine, which was used to calculate polynomial equations. Later the analytical engine succeeded the difference engine and computed Arithmetic logic unit (mill) and conditional logic (branching and loops) memory, punched card readers.

Ada Lovelace (1815-1852)

known as the first computer programmer, Lovelace was tasked with translating the Analytical engine to French and added her own notes (A-G) tripling the size of the original document. Note G computed the Bernoulli numbers and is considered the first computer programmer

Jospeh Marie Jacquard

known for programming a loom that can weave specific patterns using a chain of punched cards.

List five output devices

List five input devices

scanner, mouse, drawing pen, keyboard, microphone, and joystick

Alan Turing (1912-1954)

English computer scientist and mathematician who was highly influential in the development of theoretical computer science; the Turing machine can be considered a model of a general purpose computer. He is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. During the Second World War, he worked for the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) at Bletchley Park, Britain's codebreaking centre that produced Ultra intelligence. He devised a number of techniques for speeding the breaking of German ciphers, including improvements to the pre-war Polish bombe method, an electromechanical machine that could find settings for the Enigma machine. He played a pivotal role in cracking intercepted coded messages that enabled the Allies to defeat the Nazis in many crucial engagements. He was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts. He accepted chemical castration treatment, then committed suicide. A 2017 law that retroactively pardoned men cautioned or convicted under historical legislation that outlawed homosexual acts was informally named after him.

Moore's Law: How many circuits will there be in 2020 knowing there are 1,200 circuits in 2018.

The number of transistors per square inch on an integrated chip doubles every 18 months. 1,200 * 2 = 2,400
