Conceptual Framework

Consists of concepts pulled together as a map for a study

1. Conceptual 2. Operational

Definition of Concepts 1. ________: comparable to dictionary definition 2. ________: specifies exactly how the concept will be measured. specifies procedures and operations necessary to measure concept

1. Conceptual 2. Operational

Definitions of Ambulation 1. ________: To walk from place to place, move about. 2. ________: Taking 4 steps without assistance.

1. Conceptual 2. Operational

Definitions of Hospital Stay 1. ________: Time during which a person is a registered patient at a hospital 2. ________: Sum of days as registered patient beginning with admission day and concluding with dismissal day

Grand Theory Type

Describe discipline of nursing as a whole/broad- i.e. Neuman's Model unique, Each person is a composite of factors and characteristics normal range of responses that are referred to as normal Line of defense (LOD).

Inductive Process

Do not have a theory but test concepts and develop themes or a theory -Qualitative

1. Is a framework clearly identified 2. Is the framework appropriate for the topic 3. Are the concepts and variables clearly and appropriately defined 4. What are the conceptual and operational definitions 5. Is the basis for the hypothesis(es) clear and consistent?

Evaluating a Framework: 1. _________ 2. _________ 3. _________ 4. _________ 5. _________

1. Worldview- Paradigm 2. Frameworks 3. Theories 4. Concepts 5. Variables

Levels of Knowledge: 1.________ 2.________ 3.________ 4.________ 5.________

Theory

Research and practice are linked with _______.

Theory

Set of two or more interrelated concepts, definitions and propositions that present a systematic view of a phenomena that helps to explain and make predictions about the phenomena

Situation Specific Theory Type

(Micro Range, Practice or Prescriptive) More specific and narrow in scope. -i.e. Heart failure self care

Concept

-An image or symbolic representation of some phenomenon or aspect of reality -A generalization about something particular -An abstract idea generalized from several instances -Can be concrete ( color/red) or abstract (anxiety)

Function of Framework 1. Model

-Clarifies concepts Identifies and states underlying assumptions of study -Specifies relationship among and between concepts - ________ -symbolic representation of concepts

Construct

-Complex concept -Generally are comprised of more than one concept and built to fit a purpose -Example- Health Promotion, Maternal infant bonding

Frameworks

-Structure of concepts and/or theories used as the basis for development of the study , research question , hypotheses. It is the study's underpinnings. - Either imbedded in the literature review or a stand alone section of the article

PARADIGM-How Science is to be Conducted 1. Quantitative (KUHN) 2. Paradigm Shift

-What is to be observed and studied -Kind of questions supposed to be asked and probed for answers in relation to the subject -How questions are to be structured -How the results of scientific investigations should be interpreted -Normal Science - __________ -Paradigm Shift - ___________

Theoretical Framework

Structure of concepts that exists (tested) and is a ready made map for a study

1. Physiological 2. Psychological 3. Sociological 4. Learning 5. Leadership

Theories Used by Nurses: 1. _______- Germ, Pain, Genetic 2. _______-Anxiety 3. _______- System theory, Cultural diversity 4. _______- Behavioral learning 5. _______- Change Theory

1. Deductive Process 2. Inductive Process

Theory - Testing Research Two ways: 1. ________ 2. ________

Deductive Process

Theory-Testing Research Have a hypothesis derived from theory and test it - Quantitative

Research Question

What is the relationship between the first occurrence of ambulation in patients after open heart surgery and length of their hospital stay?

Operational Definition

_________ is found in the measurements section. Instruments that the researchers used.

Theoretical or Conceptual Framework

A literature review reveals conceptual traditions, concepts, and/or theories or conceptual models from nursing and other related disciplines that can be used to examine problems. This framework presents the context for studying the problem and can be viewed as a map for understanding the relationships between or among variables in quantitative studies. The literature review provides rationale for the variables and explains concepts, definitions, and relationships between or among the independent and dependent variables used in the theoretical framework of a study.

Paradigm

How science is to be conducted

Conceptual Definition

In review of literature section or in theoretical/conceptual framework section.

Middle Range Theory Type

More narrow limited number of concepts i.e. Mishel- Uncertainty of Illness
