Status bar

A bar at the bottom of the program window that provides information about the current file and process.

A feature within microsoft stuff that creates decorative effects with a string of text.

Sizing handles

A square, circle, or set of three dots that appears on a selection rectangle around an object and that you can drag to resize the object.

A view that displays all slides simultaneously in miniature form

Adjust picture size

Adjust the picture size using the sizing handles. Another way to do this is to use the options in the Size group on the Format tab that appears when you have a picture selected.

Notes pane

An area in Normal view where you can add simple text notes about the current slide.

Animations

Animations determine how specific objects enter or exit a slide and can be used to emphasize objects. Use the options in the Animations group.

Clip art

Clip art is a collection of images included with Microsoft Office. You can add clip art by clicking the icon in the middle of a placeholder or by selecting Clip Art from the Illustrations group on the Insert tab.

Insert an image stored on your computer

In addition to searching for media provided by Microsoft, you can also use images on your own computer. This can be done by clicking the Insert Picture from File icon in a placeholder, or by using the Picture button in the Illustrations group on the Insert tab.

Edit data

In the Chart Tools Design tab, in the Data group, select Edit Data.

Informational text

Informational text provides details or explains concepts. The formatting and style of this type of text should be kept simple so it is easy to read.

On-screen controls

Moving your mouse during a presentation brings up the on-screen controls in the bottom left corner of the screen. Use the arrows to move forward or backward in a presentation. The pen allows you to use the mouse to draw on your slides. The slide icon gives menu options for moving to specific slides or for adjusting your screen.

Normal view

Normal View shows the Slide pane, Outline pane, and Notes pane. This view is most often used to add objects, such as text or images, to a slide.

Picture styles

Notice that a new Format tab appears when a picture is selected. Predefined styles can be selected in the Picture Styles group (if you are working with a photo) or in the Shape Styles group (if you are working with clip art).

Object

Objects, sometimes called "elements," are the pictures, text boxes, charts, and so forth that are put on a slide.

Placeholder

Placeholders are areas on the slide that have been designed to hold text, pictures, movies, charts, and so forth.

Show a blank screen

Press the B key during a show to display a black screen. Press W to show a white screen. These options are helpful before a presentation if you don't want the audience to see the first slide. You can also use this option during a presentation if you want to direct the audience's attention to somewhere other than the screen.

End a slide show

Press the Esc key during a slide show to return to Normal View.

Format elements of the chart

Select the element you want to format. On the Layout tab in the Current Selection group, click the Format Selection button.

Format the entire chart

Select the entire chart by clicking its outer edge. In the Chart Tools Design tab, use the Chart Styles group.

These buttons are found on the Layout tab in the Cell Size group. These automatically adjust the height of each row or the width of the columns in the table.

Clear Formatting

This button removes any formatting in a selection of text.

Identification text

This type of text is used in headings and should stand out in order to organize information. It is also called accent text.

Bulleted lists

Text in PowerPoint slides is often organized into bulleted lists. The main idea of the slide is normally aligned to the left, and supporting points are indented. To create a bulleted list in a text box, go to the Home tab and click the Bullets button in the Paragraphs group. Use the Decrease and Increase Indent buttons to make individual points in the list main or supporting points. Pressing Tab or Shift+Tab will accomplish the same thing.

Custom Animation pane

The Custom Animation pane appears on the right when you click on the Custom Animation button in the Animations group. This pane allows you to add and modify effects for specific objects on the slides.

Format painter

The Format Painter allows you to copy only the format of text and apply it to text on another slide. The Format Painter is found on the Home tab in the Clipboard group. Double-clicking the Format Painter button locks the formatting onto the painter brush, so that it can be applied multiple times. Use the Esc key to turn off the Format Painter.

Return to the start

The Home key can be used during the Normal view or Slide Show view to return to the first slide.

Select button

The Select button (found in the Table group of the Layout tab) selects the entire table, an individual row, or an individual column. Use this button to make changes to different parts of a table without having to change individual cells.

Layout

The arrangement of text, graphic elements, and placeholders on a slide is known as the slide layout. Select the Layout button on the Slides group to change an existing slide layout.

Line spacing

The distance between lines of text can be adjusted using options in the Paragraph group on the Home tab.

Advance a slide

The down arrow, right arrow, Spacebar, and Enter keys may be used to advance a presentation.

Title slide

The first slide in a presentation is called the title slide. The title slide usually contains the title of the presentation and the full name of the person presenting the show.

Slide pane

The largest part of the window is the slide pane. This pane contains the information you will present to your audience.

Mini-toolbar

The mini-toolbar is a small toolbar that appears when you right-click on most objects in PowerPoint. It has many commonly used functions available for quick use.

Thumbnails

The miniature versions of each slide found in the outline pane are called thumbnails.

Outline pane

The outline pane is located on the left side of the window. It shows a miniature version of the slides in your show.

Go back a slide

The up arrow, left arrow, and Backspace keys may be used to move backward in a presentation.

Select multiple slides

To select adjacent slides (slides that are next to each other): Hold down the Shift key, left-click while not on a slide, then drag the mouse over the slides to be selected. Hold down the Ctrl key to select or deselect individual slides that are nonadjacent (not next to each other).

Transitions

Transitions control the way a slide moves on and off of the screen during a presentation. Choose a transition effect, add sound, and adjust the speed of a transition using the Transition to This Slide group.

Insert a new slide

Use the New Slide button found on the Slides group on the Home tab. Use the New Slide drop-down menu (under the New Slide button) to select predefined layout options.

Add or delete columns or rows

Use the buttons found on the Layout tab in the Rows & Columns group.

Adjusting the look of rows and columns

With the Design tab selected, under Table Style Options, select and change some of the options to see what it does to your table.

Applying a style

With the table selected, you will see two new tabs (Design and Layout). Select the Design tab, in the Table Styles section, select a style that you like.
