if air is holding all of the water vapor it can hold at a particular temperature , the relative humidity is _______%

if 1kg of air can hold a maximum of 10g and is now holding 2g of water, the relative humidity of the air is _______%

20

when moisture condenses on small particles in the atmosphere, __________ may form

a cloud

how does a cloud form?

a cloud forms when the temperature outside gets cool enough to reach its dew point (the temperature at which water condenses). The relative humidity exceeds 100% because of the cool temperature. This is due to the fact that cold air is less dense allowing less space for moisture, making the air more full. If the relative humidity exceeds 100%, it causes water vapor in the air to condense into liquid water onto dust particals in the air forming a cloud.

on a psychrometer, if there is a small difference between the wet and dry bulb temperatures , __________ of water evaporated so the relative humidity is _________

a little and high

circle the letter of each sentence that is true about relative humidity a. it is a percentage b. it is all the water vapor the air can hold c. it depends on the temperature d. it measures how hot it feels

a. it is a percentage c. it depends on the temperature

circle the letter of each sentence that is true about cloud types a cumulous clouds are usually a sign that a storm is approaching b. cumulonimbus and nimbostratus clouds produce rain or snow c. altostratus clouds are lower than regular stratus clouds d. cirrus clouds are made up of ice crystals

b. cumulonimbus and nimbostratus clouds produce rain or snow d. cirrus clouds are made up of ice crystals

circle the letter of each sentence that is true about condensation of water vapor a. it occurs when air gets warm b. it can occur on cold surfaces c. it explains why colds form d. it can form on dust particles

b. it can occur on cold surfaces c. it explains why colds form d. it can form on dust particles

if the amount of moisture stays the same and the temperature increases , the relative humidity ___________

decreases

the temperature at which water vapor condenses is called the __________

dew point

if the dry bulb temperature were lower, would the relative humidity be higher or lower in the room __________

higher

a cirrus cloud is made of __________

ice crystals

when the amount of moisture stays the same, if the temperature decreases the relative humidity _________

increases

a stratus cloud is a __________ level cloud

low

if there is a large difference between the wet bulb and the dry bulb temperatures, the relative humidity is ____________

low

on a humid day the clouds will be _________ in the sky

lower

warm air can hold __________ moisture the cold air

more

cumulus clouds

piles of puffy clouds associated with fair weather

condensation

process by which molecules of water vapor become liquid water

relative humidity can be measured with a ________________

psychrometer

what is relative humidity

relative humidity is the precentage of water vapor in the air compared to the maximum amount of water vapor the air can hold at a particular temperature

stratus clouds

smooth sheets or layers associated with percipitation not hail

cumulonimbus clouds

tall, dark and billowing associated with thunderstorms

evaporation

the process by which water molecules in liquid water escape into the air as water vapor

dew point

the temperature by which condensation begins

explain how the temperature of the wet bulb thermometer decreases

the temperature of the wet bulb thermometer decreases because as the water from the wet bulb evaporates (turns into water vapor) it uses the thermometers heat causing the wet bulb temperature to decrease because it has less heat than it originally has

cirrus clouds

thin wispy clouds made up of ice crystals associated with fair weather

the weather associated with a cumbulonimbus cloud is _____________

thunderstorms

is the following sentence true or false? clouds form when water vapor in the air condenses to form liquid water or ice crystals

true

which can hold more moisture warm are or cold air? why?

warm air can hold more moisture because the molecules are more spread out in warm air allowing more space for moisture
