An American group of artist activists founded in 1985. They seek to bring attention to women artists and artists of colour and to expose the dominion of white males in the art world. They are anonymous women who take on the names of dead artists and wear gorilla masks to reinforces ideas not personalities.

Audience

The GG use a variety of differnt methods and merchendise to spead their message to the greater public. Their main audience is the public but also the artist community which is male dominated.

Approriation

The poster depicts a naked woman reclining with a gorilla mask. The poster is based of the painting Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres entitled Grand Odalisque (1814) and accompanied by the facts: 'less than 5% of the artists in the Modern Art Sections are women, but 85% of the nudes are female'.

Artwork

The poster is designed based off counting the ratio of nude males to females in the MET muesum. GG appropirate the visual language of advertising to convey their messages. They combined bold text and statistics to reinforce their point.

World

The world, in the point of view of the GG is patriarchal and white-male orientated. Their work is largely postmodern (appropriation) and uses a variety of different advertising techniques to spead their message. It also directly effects the art world.
