Safety Belts

(Active protection) 45% fewer deaths, 50% critical injuries.

door locks

(usually active, sometimes passive) prevent car jacking and prevent doors from opening during a crash

Ingnition switch- five positions

Accessory, lock, off, on, start

Two types of Protective Devices and meanings

Active (passenger must engage such as safety belts; passive: automatic, such as airbag.

Lock Position

Allows you to remove the key. Some cars require you to push a button as well to remove the key. In this position the steering wheel and transmission are locked.

Power Steering

An electric motor attched to the steering wheel makes it ver easy to turn the wheel. If the car stalls, the power steering will not work and the steering will revery to stand (hard to turn) steering.

power brakes

Ann electric motor is used to make it easier to apply pressure to the breaks. Power brakess do not work when the engine stalls, when the engine stops the brakes revert to standard (harder to push) brakes.

cruise control

Automatically sets your vehical to one speed. This not be used in heavy traffic! When safe, however, it saves feul.

Six checks to make after entering the vehicle.

Close and lock all doors. Adjust the seat. Adjust the head-restraint. Adjust the mirrors. Check for frost or fog. Check for loose items in the car that might distract you. Familiarize yourself with the controls. Fasten your seat built and check to make sure that all passengers have fastenned theirs.

3 speed Manual Gearshift

Gearshift moves in an H pattern. Upper left is Reverse, Lower left is 1st gear, Upper right is 2nd gear, lower right is 3rd gear. Crossbar id Neutral.

4 speed manual transmission

Gearshift moves in an H pattern. Upper left of H is 1st, Lower left is 2nd, Upper Right is 3rd, Lower right is 4th, Cross bar is Neutral, Follow the cross bar to the far Left (push down on the stick) and then go up Left for reverse.

High Beam indicator

Lets you know that your high beams are on. Always swict to low beams as soon as you see oncoming headlights, or if you are following another car.

Two solid yellow lines on a roadway indicate that

No passing is permitted in either direction

sideview mirrors

On the outside of the car doors. Adjust before mirrors before you drive. To adjust the left sideview mirror, put your head against the left window and position the mirror so that you can just see a little bit of the car in the mirror. To adjust the right sideview mirror: Put you head in the middle of the car and position the mirror so that you can just see a little bit of the car in the mirror. Left sideview mirror often make images look further away than thjey really are.

rearview mirror

On the windshield. Adjust before you drive to see directly through the rear window.

blind spot

One of the areas of the road that you can not see through any window or in any mirror. Look over your shoulder to eliminate most of the rear blind spots.

Positions of Automatic Gear Selection Lever- 5

Park(P) : for parking, starting the engine, and opening child protected doors. Reverse(R) : used for backing up. Neutral(N): the gear used when the engine is not connected to the drive train, it can be helpful when towing or pushing a car, or if the accelerator freezes. Drive (D): for normal forward driving. Low (L or L1 and L2): used to drive up or down steep hills.

On a two lane street, an ambulance is coming from behind with it's siren blaring and lights flashing. You should

Pull over to the right and stop.

5 speed manual transmission

Shaped like an H with a center post. Crossbar is neutral. 1st is far left and up, 2nd is far left and down, 3rd is center post and up, 4th is center post and down, 5th (overdrive) is far right and up, Reverse is far left and down.

Control Systems- List 8

The ignition switch, the gear selector lever (and clutch on a standard), the clutch, the steering wheel, the brakes, the accelerator, parking brake, cruise control

Start position

This position engages the starter. Release the switch once you hear the car start, or you will damage the starter's gears. When you release the switch, it will automatically set to the "on" position. Likewise, do not switch to start when the car is already running.

On position

Turns on all of the car's electrical system. This is the position that you drive in.

check the surrounding area for children and animals that might be under or below the vehicle. Check tires for correct inflation as well as direction turned when you start to drive. Check the outside for frost or broken parts. Once a week check the oil level, radiator coolant level, brake fluid, transmission fluid, battery connections and and winshield washer fluid.

When driving downhill in a vehicle with a manual transmission, you should

downshift to gain more speed

When passing another vehicle, you must

drive 5 mph above the speed limit.

Each year approximately 200 children under the age of six are killed while playing on

Defroster

eliminates the frost and fog from front and usually rear windows. Always defrost windows before driving. A little frost can become completely opaque when hit by the sunlight.

Accessory position

lets you turn on some of the electrical system without running the engine. This includes the radio, heater and AC. Watch out, if you leave the key in this position, you can completely drain the battery and not be able to start the engine again.

Daytime running lights

low voltage lights that are aleways on when you drive. They make it easier for oncoming traffic to see you.

The higher the speed, the more likely it is to

roll over on a turn

A(n) ______ enables you to find out about a problem before your vehicle is moving.

safety check

To complete a pass safely you should

see the other vehicle's headlights in your rear-view mirror.

As you drive, you will develop the ability to estimate your speed by

sensing a difference in the vehicles vibrations

To avoid rolling backward when starting on an uphill grade, you should

set you parking brake firmly

alternator gauge

shows whether the battery is charging or depleating battery storage. If you show a discharge, turn off all uneaded electrical devices (radio, car seat warmers). Get right to a mechanic. Wait until daylight if possible, so that you do not have to turn on your lights. Soon your car will unexpectedly stop running (it needs electricity for the spark plugs in the engine) and you could be stranded or in a crash.

When you see a parking space you want accross an intersection you should

signal, cross the intersection, and park

Brake warning light

something is going wrong with the breaks. Bring the vehicle immediately to a mechanic. It may be best to have the car towed.
