Vinyl

Available in a variety of colors, attached with a special drywall finish nails; edges are left exposed without joint treatment.

Backing Board

Base layer in a multi-layer systems. Has a gray paper lining on both sides and is not suited for finishing or decorating.

Thickness of Drywall for Core board and Liner boards

3/4" or 1" used for shafts, firewalls and stairways.

Thickness of Drywall for Face Layer

3/8" thickness is applied as a face layer in repair and remodeling work over existing surfaces. Multi-layer applications in new construction.

6" Finishing Knife

Used to bed tape in the first layer of joint compound and for filling nail or screw "dimples".

Chalk line

Used to facilitate layout.

Clinch-On Cornerbread Tool

Used to fasted corner bread, this process eliminates the use of nailing or screwing corner bead in place.

Mud Pan

Used to hold and carry joint compound.

T-Square

Used to lay out and guide a 90 degree cut on drywall.

Utility knife

Used to score/cut drywall.

Surform

Used to smooth drywall edges after cutting.

Drywall Hammer

Crown (convex) head to imprint nail and form a dimple without tearing the paper.

Type-X

Drywall has special additives that make it fire-resistant, used in homes.

Corner Trowel

Flexes from 103-90 degrees. Used to apply joint compound in interior corners.

Water Resistant (WR)/ Moisture Resistant (MR)

Gypsum board that has been chemically treated to repel moisture. Used in high moisture places, bathrooms, laundries, and commercial kitchens. Referred to as green board.

Thickness of Drywall of Single Layer

1/2" and 5/8" used for single layer wall and ceiling application in residential and commercial construction.

Thickness of Drywall for Base Layer

1/4" thickness is used as a base layer in multi-layer applications.

Requirements

1) Moderately low moisture to reduce "nail pops" which causes the nail head to form "humps" 2) Stud alignment-- misalignment causes wavy, uneven appearance. 3) Ceiling joist alignment-- strong backs provide for alignment of ceiling joists and can be used at the center of a spam when center of a span when ceiling joists are uneven.

Advantages

1) Saves time in construction-- has a short drying time. 2) Many types for multiple uses.

Regular Gypsum Drywall

1) Tapered edge for effective joint concealment. 2) Pre-decorated drywall has rounded or beveled edges.

Width

Most commonly used in 4' widths.

Sound Deadening

Used as a sub-layer with other types of drywall; often only 1/4" thick.

Foil-Backed Board

Used as a vapor barrier on exterior walls.

16" and Wider Finishing Knives

Used for applying the topping coat of joint compound.

Drywall Carrier (lifter)

Used for carrying and lifting drywall sheets.

Foot lift

Used for carrying and lifting drywall.

Keyhole Saw

Used for cutting out irregular shapes and openings, such as outlet box openings.

12" Finishing Knife

Used for feathering out the second layer of joint compound and is usually adequate for the third (or topping) layer.

Sandpaper/Sponge

Used for feathering/smoothing dried joint compound.

Plasterboard

Used in plaster base, replacing wood or metal lath in new construction and renovations. Available in 16" and 24" widths is usually 48" long. Not compatible with Portland cement plaster.

Finishing/Drywall Knives

Used to apply and finish joint compound.
