The free floating system had been adopted in 1997 and was continued thereafter. This had taught economic agents to live in a world of exchange rate fluctuations. Thus, unlike ten years before, economic agents had now learned how to diversify their risks and were in the habit of doing so automatically. They diversified their portfolios, and hedged their assets. Therefore, even a sudden reversal of capital inflows would have had a relatively small impact compared to what had happened in 1997-98. > In 1998 the Bank of Indonesia responded to the crisis by implementing an extremely tight monetary policy by raising interest rates to a very high level. in 2008 the Bank of Indonesia responded to the crisis by lowering interest rates and ensuring that there was enough liquidity in the financial system. As a result, the rate of default was relatively low in 2008, thus minimizing any negative effect on NPLs owned by the banking sector. > that the structure of trade is very important in explaining the difference between the 1998 crisis and the 2008 crisis.
