What is an energy conversion?

A change from one form of energy to another. Any form of energy can be converted into any other form.

Give two examples of energy conversion, use different forms of energy for each example.

A toaster converts electrical energy into thermal energy to heat the food. Your body converts the chemical energy in the food you eat to the mechanical energy to move your muscles.

Describe the energy conversions that occur when a ball is tossed up into the air.

As a ball rises kinetic energy decreases and potential energy increases. AT the highest point, the ball stops moving and no longer passes kinetic energy, only potential. As the ball falls, energy conversion is reversed. The kinetic energy increases and the potential energy decreases.

What is the law of conservation of energy?

The law of conversion of energy states that when one form of energy is converted to another, no energy is destroyed in the process. Energy cannot be created or destroyed.

Describe the energy conversions that occur when a ball is dropped and bounces back up. Why do you think the ball bounces a little lower each time?

When the ball is dropped, potential energy changes to kinetic energy. As it bounces back up, kinetic energy is converted to potential energy. The ball doesn't bounce as high because some energy escapes as thermal or sound when the ball hits the ground.
