What is the most valid moral that you find in "The Pardoner's Tale"—in other words, what message or idea in it still applies best to life today? Discuss how this message is delivered in the tale. Analyze any way in which the message is ironic, such as a discrepancy between the tale and the teller; between what is expected and what happens; or between what is said and what is meant.
A valid moral that one can find within "The Pardoner's tale" is that Greed is the source of evil. Within the tale the rioters end up finding riches. The problem is that the greedy rioters want to keep the riches for each of themselves. As a result, two killing plots occur and all of the rioters die. Thus, the rioters' greed was the source of their death. The message of greed being the cause of death can even still occur today. For instance a company could be greedy with money, which could lead them to spend too much and their business could collapse. The message is also very ironic. There is a discrepancy between the tale and the teller. The Pardoner who tells the story is a greedy man. For instance he pardons people of their sins for materialistic reasons. Though, the story is about how bad greed is. So, the Pardoner is being a hypocrite. Therefore, there is irony as well.
Why might a writer sometimes return to an earlier writing stage?
A writer might return to an earlier wiring stage if they need to clarify or redo something within their wiring peace. Clarifying something can be very important. A reader may be writing their rough draft and realize they need to go back and double check their facts or information from their pre write. The reader could also go back and check the information to see if it needs to be added. Then, the reader can add the information to their paper. The same could go for the drafting, revising, editing, or publishing stage. Overall, clarifying and going back a wiring stage helps the writing piece turn out better. The reader could also go back to an earlier stage to redo something. The reader could be revising or editing their rough draft and see an error. Because of this, they could go back to the pre write to help them redo that part of the paper. The reader could also redo parts of their final draft and for help they could look back at their rough draft. A process like this is especially important to do before publishing. This could be seen as a form of editing or revising. Therefore,a writer will sometimes return to an earlier writing stage for various reasons.
Achilles is a flawed protagonist as illustrated in Book 22? Explain why he is the protagonist and why he is flawed.
Achilles is flawed because he lets his emotions get the best of him. For example, when he killed Hector he kept hurting Hector's dead body out of anger. Achilles happens to be the protagonist because he is the leader of the Greeks.
Describe how Achilles wins the duel.
Achilles throws a spear at Hector, but Hector is able to avoid it. After that, Hector takes the spear and throws is at Achilles, but it bounces off his shield and Achilles is able to hit Hector's neck.

Discuss the connotative meaning of each of the following words: Home Dwelling House Residence
All four words have the same denotation, but different connotations. Home often connotatively means somewhere safe or cozy. Home is a place that a person can go to with their family or loved ones and live. This connotation of home can often be seen in commercials or movies or even music. Overall, home has a positive connotation. On the other hand, dwelling is just a place for someone to live. It's usually not seen as being comfortable. Therefore, dwelling can be seen as having a negative or neutral connotation. House is usually just seen as the building where somebody lives. It often isn't seem as a negative or positive object. Instead, the word house has a neutral connotation. Residence is similar to the word house. It also is usually just seen as the building in which people live. Residence isn't positive or negative too. Therefore, resident has a neutral connotation.

Which phrase best restates the underlined words in this quotation from Beowulf? Explain why your answer choice is the correct answer. He who had come to them from across the sea, / Bold and strong-minded, had driven affliction / Off, purged Herot clean. a. had killed Grendel in battle b. had rid the land of pain and suffering c. had forced the evil monster from the hall d. had successfully repelled fate
B. Had rid the land of pain and suffering. Beowulf (he who had come from across the great sea), had killed Grendel. Grendel had been causing much pain and suffering. Thus, when Beowulf had "driven affliction off," it meant he had rid the land of pain and suffering. Also the actual definition of affliction is something that causes pain or something, also known as Grendel.
In Chaucer's day, the science of medicine was taught quite differently from the way it is taught today. Chaucer tells us the Doctor "was a very good practitioner" (line 424). If this is true, how did doctors treat their patients in the 1400s? Write a detailed paragraph describing the physician's art, using examples and quotations from "The Prologue" to The Canterbury Tales for support.
Back then, doctors treated their patients very different. The Doctor relies on astronomy and astrology to help his patients. For instance, "He watched his patient closely for the hours When, by his horoscope, he knew the powers Of favorable planets, then ascendant, Worked on the images for his dependent" (Chaucer 425-428). The Doctor would look at the stars and pay attention to the patient's horoscope and make medical decisions based on that. For example, he would give out medicine. This could be seen when he had "drugs he would prescribe" (Chaucer 436). He also believed in keeping a good diet. For example, "In his own diet he observed some measure; There were no superfluities for pleasure, Only digestives, nutritives and such" (Chaucer 445-447).
In a brief essay, explain how Beowulf is introduced. How do others view him? Explain his reason for undertaking his journey.
Beowulf is introduced as being a strong hero. The poem tells how he is respected, even though when he was younger, he was thought of as lazy and not warrior material. Although, Beowulf did become the most powerful warrior. Others view him as powerful and strong because of his many victories. Beowulf's reason for undertaking his journey is because he wants to gain more fame and glory.
The question below refers to the selection "from Beowulf." What is the outcome of Beowulf's battle with Grendel?
Beowulf kills Grendel and puts his arm on the roof. After slaying Grendel's mother, Beowulf chops off Grendel's head and takes it to Hrothgar.
What are Beowulf's virtues? How might these virtues be especially important to a warrior society? Support your answers with details from the selection.
Beowulf's virtues are loyalty, courage, ambition, and strength. These virtues would be important in warrior society because they represent the heroic code, and would make one a great warrior fighter. For instance if a warrior was loyal to his people, he would fight for them. If a warrior had courage, and was strong he could fight the toughest things and not be hesitant to do so. If a warrior was ambitious, he could be determined to win all the battles he can, which would be good for his legacy.
Write a one-paragraph response in which you use your knowledge of the epic hero and evidence from Beowulf to answer this question: Are Beowulf and Wiglaf suitable figures for an epic?
Both Beowulf and Wiglaf are suitable figures for an epic. Beowulf is suitable because he follows the heroic code, which makes him an epic hero. For instance, Beowulf helps Hrothgar's people and defeats the "powerful monster" that lives "down in darkness" (1-2). Wiglaf also becomes an epic hero at the end of the epic, which makes him suitable to be in the poem. For example, when Beowulf dies, Wiglaf "lead[s] [Beowulf's] people" and "help[s] them" (811-812).
Discuss the strategy of using connotation and denotation to determine the meaning of a word.
Both connotation and denotation can be used to determine the meaning of a word. Connotation is the emotional and imaginative association surrounding a word. The reader could first see how the word makes them feel. The word could either give off a negative, positive, or neutral feeling. Next, the reader could see what the word makes them imagine when they read it. The emotions and images that the word makes the reader imagine and feel can be used as clues for the reader to understand the word. Like connotation, denotation can also help the reader determine the meaning of a word. Denotation is the strict dictionary meaning of a word. The reader could get a dictionary and search for the word. Once they find the word's denotative meaning, they will know the actual meaning of the word they are looking for. The reader can also combine denotation and connotation. When they combine the two, the reader can know both the literal meaning and the emotional meaning attached to the word. Therefore, the strategy of using connotation and denotation can determine the meaning of a word.

Consider the many characterizations in "The Prologue" to The Canterbury Tales of the men and women associated with the church. From these portraits, what conclusion might you draw about Chaucer's attitude toward the church and/or religious practitioners? Write an essay in which you present your conclusion and support it with evidence from "The Prologue."
Chaucer appeared to have a negative view of the church. His attitude could be seen in the characterizations of the religious characters within the prologue. The author portrays the religious in a greedy, mocked, and sinful way. For instance, Pardoner, who is a clergyman, had a "wallet... on his lap,/ Brimful of pardons come from Rome" (Chaucer 706-707). Because the Pardoner's wallet was so full, one could say he is greedy. Greed is also a sin. The author seems to make notice of how greedy the pardoner is. So, Chaucer seems to mock him by showing how open about his greed he is. Chaucer also displays his cynicism towards the church with the characterization of other characters. The Nun is also an example. For instance, the Nun "wore a coral trinket on her arm, ;A set of beads, the gaudies tricked in green, /Whence hung a golden brooch of brightest sheen" (Chaucer 162-164). Nuns are known for not showing off and for acting humble. Yet, the Nun shows off her gleaming jewelry. The Nun can be seen as a greedy character, even though she is a representation of the church. Therefore, Chaucer dislikes the church.
As the father of English poetry, Chaucer is well known for his "penetrating insight into human character." In an essay, explain how this illuminating view is evident in "The Prologue" to The Canterbury Tales. Use specific examples from the poem to elaborate on your thoughts.
Chaucer is able to have "insight into human character" within "The Prologue" through his complex descriptions of characters. When Chaucer described the Pardoner, he described the Pardoner's many qualities and values. For instance, the author explained how the Pardoner has a "cross of metal set with stones" (Chaucer 719). And he also explained how he did well at "read[ing] a lesson or [telling] a story" (Chaucer 729). These quotes show how the Pardoner is very religious. Also, it shows how the Pardoner is passionate. Thus, the reader is able to see the insight into the Pardoner's human character. Chaucer also showed insight into human character in even more characters. The author showed more insight when he described the Knight. When describing the Knight, the author explains how the Knight is "ever honored for his noble graces" (50). This is an innuendo that the Knight is somewhat of a hero. The reader is able to tell more about the Knight from what Chaucer explains and hints at. Thus, there is more insight into the human character of the Knight. Therefore, Chaucer is able to have "insight into human character" within "The Prologue" through his complex descriptions of characters.
Chaucer's characters represent every level of medieval society, from the nobility to the lower class. Provide evidence for this on the following chart. List three pilgrims from different social classes in The Canterbury Tales. Briefly describe each character. Describe the level of society from which each comes. Describe the effect this broad presentation of life in the Middle Ages has on the reader.
Chaucer's characters represent a wide range of classes (levels) within medieval society. The three characters that inhibit these level characteristics are the Knight, the Miller, and the Pardoner. The Knight represents the nobility (upperclass). The prologue states that the Knight "had followed chivalry" (Chaucer 45). Often times, the nobility would have chivalry and would be known for it. Furthermore, the Knight is "ever honored for his noble graces" (Chaucer 50). Thus, he is in the upperclass (nobility). The Miller represents a peasant. The prologue explains that the Miller is "filthy in the main" (Chaucer 577). Often times, peasants weren't very clean in medieval society. The Pardoner represents a clergyman. The Pardoner had sewed "a holy relic on his cap" (Chaucer 705). Clergymen would usually have religious symbols on their clothing or with them, like the Pardoner. Overall, this broad presentation can show the reader just how diverse life was in the middle ages due to the variety of classes.
Discuss the strategy of using context clues to determine the meaning of a word.
Context clues involve pictures, words, or the main idea around a word. If a text includes a picture, the reader can look at it to help. Often times, the picture will act as a virtual representation for what the text is saying. This gives the reader a clue to what the meaning of the mystery word is. The reader can also look at the surrounding words. Often times the words within the same sentence of the mystery word are similar and have to do with he same meaning. Thus, the surrounding words can give hints to the meaning of the word. The reader can also look at the main idea of a sentence. A sentence can often be discussing one simple idea. The mystery word will have to relate to that idea. Knowing that the word relates will give the reader a clue to the mystery word's meaning. The reader can also relate the mystery word with a synonym. If the reader knows the idea of the sentence they can input different words to see if they make sense. If the word does make sense, the reader has found the meaning.
Read the passage below. Discuss how you used context clues to determine the meaning of the underlined word. In a process called rigging, the virtual marionette is given various controllers and handles for an animator to manipulate.
Context clues require an individual to look for the clues around the underlined word. In this case, the underlined world is manipulate. The sentence explains that the animator (noun) manipulates. This means that manipulate is being used as a verb. Furthermore, the reader can also look at the main idea of the sentence. The sentence discusses how one uses a certain process. This process involves a virtual puppet to be controlled. Now the reader knows that the word manipulate has something to do with control. Lastly, the reader can try different synonyms to replace the underlined word. The word manipulate relates to control. One could put it in the sentence: "In a process called rigging, the virtual marionette is given various controllers and handles for an animator to control." The synonym seems to fit. Therefore, by using context clues I found that the world manipulate means to control or to work.

Discuss the connotative meaning for each of the following words: Woman Lady Chick
Each word has the same denotative definition, but the three words all have different connotative meanings. The word woman means an adult female. To call someone a woman would simply just to be stating that she is a female and nothing else. Thus, woman isn't positive or negative, just neutral. The word lady is also describes an adult female. In this case, the word often means a fancy woman. Thus, the connotation is positive. The word chick also describes an adult women. Calling a woman a chick isn't even really referring to her as an actual woman. In this case, she is being described as an baby bird. Thus, she is being dehumanized. The word chick can also be seen as being something not serious. Hence, the word chick has a negative connotation. Overall, all three words are similar but emotionally different.
Imagine that Grendel has escaped unharmed after fighting Beowulf at Herot. Based on what the poem has taught you about the monster, what do you think Grendel will do next in his war against Beowulf and the Danes? Use reasons and examples from Beowulf to further explain your opinion.
Grendel is a monster from the swamps who is capable of killing Hrothgar's men. If Grendel had escaped unharmed after fighting Beowulf at Herot, based on what the poem has taught me about Grendel, I predict that Grendel would keep attacking at night against Beowulf and the Danes. Grendel would most likely keep hunting at night because he "hunt[s] in the darkness" (74). Furthermore, Grendel would most likely keep attacking due to his anger about how Beowulf tried to fight him. If Grendel simply became mad about the singing in Herot's Hall, then he would definitely get mad about Beowulf trying to defeat him. Grendel could even bring his mother in, since she supports him. For example, his mother fought for Grendel after he was killed.
A fundamental Anglo-Saxon belief is that human life is shaped by fate. How is this belief reflected in "The Wife's Lament"? Answer this question in an essay, giving examples from one or more of the poems to support your explanation.
Fate is shown within "The Wife's Lamnent." It's shown because of the wife's acceptance. First of all, she has accepted that she has been exiled. For instance, she now remains in an old "earth-cave" (32). The wife could be trying to find her husband or where she lived. Instead, she remains where she has been told. Thus, she has accepted her fate. The wife also accepts the reality of her and her husband's situation. The wife and her husband are not allowed to be together. For example she simply accepts the "absence of [her] lord" (37). The wife could be trying to search for her husband. Instead, the wife simply imagines her husband. Hence, once again, the wife accepts her fate. Therefore, the poem includes the belief of fate.

February fourteenth, also known as Valentine's Day, is celebrated all over the United States. Greeting cards are sent to relatives and sweethearts. Many people also receive large boxes of chocolate.
Which character seems more heroic to you, Achilles or Hector? Use examples from the poem to support your answer.
Hector seems more heroic to me because he has more morals. For example, Hector talked fairly during his battle with Achilles and said, " Let us, then, give pledges to one another by our gods, who are the fittest witnesses and guardians of all covenants" (Homer). hector understood that things must be fair and even discussed it with the Greeks. On the other hand, Achilles fights with emotions and mostly thinks of himself. For instance, even after Hector was dead, Achilles dragged him along the ground.
Many critics and teachers believe that Beowulf contains themes that are relevant to modern life. Do you agree or disagree? Explain your answer in an essay.
I agree that Beowulf does contain themes that are relevant to modern life. First of all, Beowulf contains the theme that one should always try and be heroic. This theme shows relevance because in modern life, people should still and do try their best to be good to others and to help them. Another theme is that of Christianity. In modern day, many people are still religious and Christian. A third theme is good v.s. evil. To this day, there is a still a battle of good v.s. evil. For example, crime v.s. those who try and stop it.

Imagine you are the speaker in "The Seafarer" and another seaman has told you to turn away from God and believe in your own ability to deal with life. How would you respond? Write a short essay in which you explain why you can or cannot take this person's advice. Remember that you are the speaker in the poem and that your reasons and examples should come from the poem.
If I was a speaker and I got that advice, I would object. The speaker in "The Seafarer" believes in fate. This means that the speaker believes that one must turn to God. Also, the speaker believes that God deals with one's life. For instance, in the poem the speaker says that "fate has willed and fate will do" (43). This implies that the speaker (now me) would feel confident that there is no stopping God. Hence, turning away would be pointless. If I used my ability to deal with my own life, I would most likely turn back to the sea. The sea is very dangerous. For instance, it has "hailstorms" and more (17). Thus, if I were to go back to the sea, I would most likely die. Following my own ability wouldn't help in the end. Therefore, the I should follow God's ability. Overall, I would not follow the seaman's advice.
Read the passage below. Discuss what strategies you used to determine the meaning of the underlined words. It came on great oiled, resilient, striding legs. It towered thirty feet above half of the trees, a great evil god, folding its delicate watchmaker's claws close to its oily reptilian chest. Each lower leg was a piston, a thousand pounds of white bone, sunk in thick ropes of muscle, sheathed over in a gleam of pebbled skin like the mail of a terrible warrior. Each thigh was a tone of meat, ivory, and steel mesh. And from the great breathing cage of the upper body those two delicate arms dangles out front, arms with hands which might pick up and examine men like toys, while the snake neck coiled. And the head it self, a ton of sculptured stone, lifted easily upon the sky. Its mouth gaped, exposing a fence of teeth like daggers. Its eyes rolled, ostrich eggs, empty of all expression save hunger. It closed its mouth in a death grin. It ran, pelvic bones crushing aside trees and bushes, its taloned feet clawing damp earth, leaving prints six inches deep wherever it settled its weight. It ran with a gliding ballet step, far too poised and balanced for its ten tons.
Many strategies can be used to determine the underlined words. First of all, the reader could use parts of speech. The underlined word resilient is used to describe the noun legs. Thus, it's an adjective. The underlined word piston appears to be an object. So, the word is a noun. The underlined word gliding describes the noun ballet step. Thus, it is an adjective. Lastly, the underlined word poised also described the noun ballet step, making it an adjective. If the reader knew all of the part of speech information above, they would be a step closer to figuring out the meaning of the words. The reader could also use context clues. The idea and words surrounding resilient are that there are striding legs that can handle a lot. The reader can assume that the word resilient has to do with strength. The word piston is surrounded by the idea that it's heavy. Thus, the reader knows that a piston has to do with weighing a lot. the word gliding is near the word ran and ballet. Thus, the word could have to do with being like a dance run. The word poised also is surrounded by the word ballet, meaning it has to do with gracefulness or dancing. One other strategy the reader could use is using other resources. For instance the reader could use a dictionary. The word resilient means strong. A piston is a part of a car engine. Gliding means to smoothly move in a continuous motion. Poised means graceful and composed. Therefore, there are many strategies to all help determine the meaning of the underlined words within the passage.
What might be your purpose in writing an essay about a favorite television show?
My purpose in writing an essay about a favorite television show might be to communicate my ideas about the show through writing, to express my feelings about the show, to persuade someone to like or watch the show, to describe (inform the reader) what the show is about, to argue about something within the show, or to entertain the reader.
Fill in the planning web to brainstorm about some ideas for an essay on a favorite television show. (sample planning web)
Name of television show, favorite characters, plot, setting, when the television show is from, who made the television show, what inspired the TV show makers to create the television show, which audience watches the television show, controversies within the television show, why it's their favorite tv show, and who they would recommend it to.
In describing the Cook, Chaucer says, "But very ill it was, it seemed to me, / That on his shin a deadly sore had he" (lines 387-388). Is this a direct or indirect characterization? Is it both? What do these lines from "The Prologue" to The Canterbury Tales tell you about the Cook?
One can say that it's an indirect characterization. The text says that the Cook has a "sore" (Chaucer 387-388). Thus, the Cook has an injury. Often times, sores can be seem as dirty. The reader can indirectly see that the Cook might me a dirty character. Furthermore, the Cook could also be indirectly characterized as careless. If he was able to get a sore while simply cooking, he can be seen as not caring enough to do his job. Therefore, it's an indirect characterization. This characterization can tell the reader many things about the Cook. First of all, it can show the reader that the Cook might not be a good cook. Since he was carelessly able to get a sore, the Cook could be careless about other cooking things as well. One could also say that the cook is unsanitary. The sore is dirty, so the Cook probably is too. Hence, he has bad hygiene. Overall, many things can be observed about the Cook from his indirect characterization.
One of the major themes in Beowulf is conquest. What lessons can you learn from reading about the battles and accomplishments of the characters in this epic? Provide evidence from the text to support your opinion.
One lesson a person can learn from reading about the battles and accomplishments of the characters in this epic is that good overcomes evil. For instance, Beowulf set out on his conquest to defeat Grendel, the evil monster. Beowulf was able to defeat the monster by hurting Grendel until Grendel's "power had gone" (337). Another lesson is that one should act like a hero (heroic code). For example, Beowulf set out to help Hrothgar's people, even though they were foreign and he didn't have to, which is very honorable.
Write a strong lead for an essay about your favorite television show. Use at least two adjectives.
Pretty Little Liars (my favorite television show) is both alluring and entertaining. The television show is set in the town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania. The mysterious plot of four local girls' friend's death leaves the audience wanting to watch even more. Within each episode, the girls must complete tasks and take part in fascinating adventures, which draws the viewers' attention. Furthermore, the characters add to the enticing and amusing show. Each of the four protagonists differ from one another because of their style and personality. The most interesting part of the show is that the audience is never quite sure who the antagonist really is! Overall, the television show Pretty Little Liars is definitely one which should be watched, and there are even more reasons as to why that is that are explained within the essay.
How is sympathy for Beowulf encouraged in this epic? Support your ideas with reference to the poem.
Sympathy from Beowulf is encouraged when he goes to help those in need. Beowulf understood that Hrothgar's men were being killed in Herot hall by Grendel, so he went an defeated Grendel and eventually Grendel's mother. Also in the epic, the great warriors are sympathetic to their kings and will fight in their honor or make tributes to them when they die. For instance, Wiglaf kept fighting for Beowulf when Beowulf died.

In "The Prologue" to The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer's narrator introduces many different characters traveling to Canterbury. Choose one of these characters and write an essay explaining the nature of his or her personality and what the key details and statements reveal about this individual's personality.
The Knight has a very interesting personality. One could say that the Knight is very honorable. For instance, the author states that "from the day on which he first began/ To ride abroad had followed chivalry, /Truth, honor, generousness and courtesy" (Chaucer 44-46). The Knight has many good character traits that the author describes (ex. truth). One can assume that those traits make him honorable. Furthermore, the Knight also "[rode] into battle" (Chaucer 48). Fighting in a war can also make one seem even more honorable. The Knight can also be seem as cultured. For instance, the narrator states that "when in Prussia. In Lithuania he had ridden, and Russia,/No Christian man so often, of his rank. /When, in Granada, Algeciras sank Under assault, he had been there, and in /North Africa, raiding Benamarin;/ In Anatolia he had been as well" (Chaucer 53-59). The Knight has been many different places. Thus, he has been able to observe many things. One of those things would be culture. Hence, he is cultured. Therefore, the Knight has an interesting personality with a couple of traits.

In the beginning of "Beowulf," King Hrothgar's hall has been deserted for twelve years. In a short essay, tell why the hall has been deserted. Be sure to include specific examples from the text. What happened to those who ventured into the hall during those 12 years? What was the cause of this? At what time of day did these events take place? Explain.
The hallway has been deserted due to the attacks by Grendel. Grendel disliked the songs about God's creation that were sung in the hallway, so he "filled the nights with horror" for 12 years (112). For example, Grendel "stalked Hrothgar's warriors, old /And young" (75-76). People who ventured into the hall would always be killed by Grendel only during the night, for Grendel "hunted in the darkness" (74). The cause of this was ultimately "Grendel's hatred" and how Grendel would "accept[...] no settlement" (66-70).
A fundamental Anglo-Saxon belief is that human life is shaped by fate. How is this belief reflected in "The Seafarer,"? Answer this question in an essay, giving examples from the poem.
The belief of fate is reflected in "The Seafarer" through several ways. First of all, fate is shown through the seafarer's acceptance of fate. The seafarer believes that fate has brought him to not be in the sea anymore. This is shown when the seafarer says that "fate has willed an will do" by having him not be in the sea anymore (43). Thus, fate has willed the seafarer to be on land. Furthermore, the author even explains the strength of fate. This is shown when the author explains how "fate is strong[...]" (115). The final way in which the fate is discussed is when the traits of fate are described. The first trait is that fate can end someone's life through sickness. For instance, the seafarer explains that "illness" is a "threat" that fate contains (70). The second is fate can end people's life through "age" (70). Lastly, fate can end a human's life through an enemy attack. For example, a person's life could be "snatch[ed]" (71). Therefore, the poem discusses the many things that fate contains.
A fundamental Anglo-Saxon belief is that human life is shaped by fate. How is this belief reflected in "The Wanderer,"? Answer this question in an essay, giving examples from the poem to support your explanation.
The belief of fate is shown many ways in "The Wanderer." The first way is by expressing how wandering can shape fate. The wanderer finds himself coming across many dangerous things. For instance, he comes across "hardships" (12). These hardships can pose a threat to the wanderer's life. Thus, being a factor in when the wanderer dies. The wanderer cannot "withstand fate" (30). Therefore, fate is shaped by the dangers of wandering. Fate is also shown to be influenced by time. The wanderer has a lot of time on his hands. For example much "time has passed" (91). Having so much time has allowed the wanderer to do many things. All of these events allow the wanderer to be shifted in different directions in life. Thus, the wanderer's "famous fate" is "turn[ed] [by] events" (101). Therefore, time influences fate.
Most of the poems and stories of the Anglo-Saxon period were passed along by the oral tradition. In an essay, tell how the use of features such as the kenning and caesura may have helped maintain this oral tradition. Illustrate your explanation with examples from "The Seafarer,"
The caesuras help add pauses that keep the poem simple. Simple poems are easy to remember. For instance in the line "Hung with icicles. The hailstorms flew," there is a pause in the middle (17). This pause can add rhythm to the poem. If the poem has rhythm, it can be more easily remembered. If the poem is easily remembered, it can be recited more easily form generation to generation. Thus, helping the oral tradition be maintained. Kennings also cause easy remembrance. Within the poem, hail is referred to as the "coldest seeds" (33). Hail is a common word and can be forgotten easily. But, referring to it as seeds allows it to be unique. If it is unique, then it can catch one's attention more easily. And things that catch attention more easily often are remembered. Thus, the kennings can be easily remembered, which helps oral traditions stay maintained.
Dialogue can play an important part in any story. In an essay, analyze the dialogue between the young rioters and the other characters. What does the dialogue show about the rioters? The other characters?
The dialogue among characters can show the personality of certain characters and the sins they represent. During their small journey, the rioters come across an old man. The old man says, "Not even Death, alas, will take my life; /So, like a wretched for prisoner at strife/ Within himself, I walk alone and wait" (Chaucer 124-126). The old man's dialogue shows that he has been through a lot and has been living for a long time. One could say that the old man has a wise personality. The old man also states that he feels trapped. Thus, the old man could also feel sad often. The old man's dialogue allows the reader to see who he really is. The rioter's dialogue also tells more about them. While the youngest rioter is getting food, the other two rioters begin to speak, and one says "As you attack, /I'll up and put my dagger in his back" (Chaucer 226-227). The rioter's speech reveals that he would kill his friend for riches. The rioters don't seem to care much about one another. Hence, they can be seen as having a careless personality. Furthermore, the rioter's dialogue also reveals the rioters' sins. For instance, their greed and how they think they are better than one another (pride). Therefore, dialogue can reveal the personality and sins of the characters.
If you were writing an essay about a favorite television show, describe the strongest and weakest elements of the television program.
The favorite television show has both a strongest and a weakest point. To begin, its strongest point is the plot. The plot is strong because it is adventurous, it is intriguing, and it is funny. The plot was adventurous when the main characters when on a boat ride with pirates. The plot was intriguing when the main characters got stuck in a cave and thought they wouldn't get out. Lastly, the plot was funny when the characters had to disguise themselves as clowns. Therefore, because of the wonderful traits that the plot possesses, the plot is the strongest element in the favorite television show. The favorite television show also contains a weakest element. Its weakest element is its characters. The characters are the weakest element because they are boring, non-developing, and bad influences. The characters are boring because despite the great plot, the characters never make jokes and hardly ever talk. The characters don't develop because throughout the entire show they don't change age, change personality, or change their appearances in the slightest bit. Finally, the characters are bad influences because they constantly smoke. Therefore, the characters of the favorite tv show are the weakest element.
Before they duel, Hector asks Achilles to make a pact. What is the pact, and how does Achilles respond?
The pact asks for fairness in that Hector's and Achilles's bodies be returned to their people when and if they die in battle and that they have a proper funeral. Achilles refuses and when Hector dies, Achilles drags his corpse along the ground. After that, Achilles returns Hector's body to Priam.
When Grendel fights Beowulf, the reader learns that the monster's "time had come," and he will soon die. What does this idea say about the Danish belief in fate? Write a short essay in which you show how the belief in destiny influences the thoughts and actions of the characters. Provide several other examples from Beowulf to support your position.
The idea "When Grendel fights Beowulf, the reader learns that the monster's 'time had come,' and he will soon die," shows that the author and the "good" characters within the story believe in fate. This is because the author is basically stating that Grendel's death was already set and dying soon was his destiny. The idea of destiny influences the actions of the characters many other times throughout the poem. For instance, within the poem Beowulf states "fate will often spare a man if his courage holds" (162). This quote shows that Beowulf believes in destiny and uses it as a way to boast about himself. In contrast to Beowulf, Grendel states "if you win, it's by mindless chance," which implies that Grendel does not believe in fate (171). In this case, destiny influences Grendel to be defensive against the Christians.
The hero of an epic poem, such as Beowulf, normally embodies the ideals of conduct that are most valued by the culture in which the epic was composed. Write an essay in which you show how Beowulf embodies the ideals of conduct in the Anglo-Saxon culture. You should mention at least four of Beowulf's virtues. For each one, cite the part or parts of the epic where the virtue is displayed.
The ideals of conduct that were most valued by the Anglo-Saxon culture was that of the heroic code. One of the ways in which Beowulf embodied the ideals of the heroic code was when he was fair. For instance, in the first part of the epic, Beowulf fought Grendel barehanded since Grendel didn't posses weapons. Secondly, Beowulf also cared for and had concern for others. For example, he crossed all the way to Foreign land just to protect Hrothgar's people. Third of all, Beowulf was determined and hard working. Even though fighting Grendel's mother was a hard task, Beowulf didn't give up. Lastly, Beowulf was also loyal. When he arrived back to his land after fighting the monsters in Hrothgar's kingdom, Beowulf gave over half of his treasure to his own king.

In his journeys, the speaker in "The Wanderer" learned many lessons. He talks about one of the lessons in lines 12-13, when he says I know it truly / that it is in men a noble custom That one should keep secure / his spirit chest (mind) Why does the speaker believe this, and how has this belief shaped his actions? Answer these questions in a one- to two-paragraph written response. Be sure to support your ideas with evidence from the poem.
The lesson that the speaker has learned is that a sorrowful person cannot survive. The speaker believes this because of his own sorrowful experience. On the wanderer's journey he faced many tough experiences that upset him. For instance, he saw "fierce slaughters" and the "downfall of kinsmen," which led him to feel "trouble[d]" (13-16). The hardships that the speaker had experienced had caused him to be surrounded by sorrow. Being sorrowful wouldn't let the speaker move on in life. Thus, he learned the lesson that sorrowfulness makes it so one cannot survive in life. As a result, the other has changed his actions to move on it life. No long is the speaker sorrowful. The author now tries to keep sane. Fo instance, he "secure[s]' his mind (13). Securing his mind allows the author to not think sorrowfully. Furthermore, the author's "spirit does not darken" (57-58). If the author doesn't feel sorrowful he is able to move forward.
List the major battles in Beowulf. State the battle you think is the most important, and then use reasons and examples from the poem to explain why.
The major battles in the Beowulf are the battle with Grendel, the the battle with Grendel's mother, and the battle with the dragon. The battle that is most important is the battle with the dragon. This battle is most important because it brings about a "dying Beowulf" (765), allows Beowulf to show honor for the old king he once served, allows Beowulf to protect his citizens from the Gaets, and allows Wiglaf to become the new king.
Who is the old man in "The Pardoner's Tale"? Is he a spy for Death? Is he an innocent bystander? Is he Death itself? Write an essay in which you assert your position. Use examples from the text to support your position.
The old man can be seen as a spy for Death. The old man essentially lead the rioters to their deaths. The old man said "if it be your design /to find out Death, turn up this crooked way... Under a tree" (Chaucer 159-162). The rioters find gold underneath the tree. Each rioter wants the gold. The rioters then begins to plot against one another. Soon enough, they end up killing one another. The Old man was the one that lead the rioters to the tree. He seemed to know that Death would be there. The rioters followed his advice. As a result they died. It was as if the old man wanted them to die or was an advocate for death. Yet, the old man didn't actually kill the rioters. Therefore, he was just a spy.

3D computer animation combines 3D modeling with programmed movement. Models are constructed out of geometrical vertices, faces, and edges in a true 3D coordinate system. Objects are sculpted much like real clay or plaster, working from general forms to specific details with various sculpting tools. A bone/joint system is set up to deform the 3d mesh ie. to make a humanoid model walk. In a process called rigging, the virtual marionette is given various controllers and handles for an animator to manipulate. Look at the picture and read the passage above. How does the picture help you determine the meaning of the passage?
The picture above can help the reader determine the meaning of the passage. The picture is a visual description of what the passage has to say. First of all, the passage says "3D computer animation combines 3D modeling with programmed movement." The image displays a computer with 3D animation on it, which is what the passage described. Furthermore, the passage also discusses how there are models that are constructed, and the picture shows a model of a man-looking figure. The passage also describes how the models (the man-looking figure) are sculpted like clay, and the reader could say that the figure does look clay-like. One way to understand a piece of literature is to look at it in its historical context. In an essay, tell how knowing the historical context helps you better understand the poetry in this section. Use examples from the selections to illustrate this historical connection.
The poem takes place in Anglo-Saxon times. During this historical period, many people migrated into England and invaded. These invasions caused fights to break out. These fights were often violent and harsh. Though these fights were harsh, the people still remained in their land. Sometimes staying in their beloved land would cause people to die. All of this history can connect to the poem "The Seafarer." The Germanic tribes' violence can be shown through the harsh ways of the ocean. For example the sea "whirled in sorrow," just like those involved in the violence (15). The people remaining in and the peoples' love for their homeland can be represented by the seafarer's desire for the sea. The seafarer felt he would be "sent... over" to the sea (30). Also, the seafarer would feel "so proud" of the sea, like the people did for their homeland (39). Thus, there was a strong desire for both the seafarer and the people who remained in their homeland. Overall, there are many connections between the historical time period and the poem.

They could even find a word's synonym by looking in a thesaurus. Or they could ask another person Therefore, the strategy of using resources to determine the meaning of a word requires an individual to research using different materials.
Lines 55-56 of "The Seafarer," the speaker says, "Who could understand, / In ignorant ease, what we others suffer." Based on evidence from the poem, what do the seafarer and people like him endure? Write one to two paragraphs in which you show that you understand what these seamen experience and why they go through such trouble. Be sure to use reasons and examples from "The Seafarer" to support your opinions.
The seafarer and people like him endure many things that make them "suffer." They suffered because they have a desire for the sea. First of all, the seafarer and others endure physical pain. For example the seafarer had to go trough "hailstorm[s]" and "freezing waves" (17-19). The seafarer and others also endured mental pain. For instance the seamen had no "offer[ed] comfort," which left them "drowning in desolation" (25-26). Therefore, the experienced both physical and mental pain. The reason the seamen went through so much pain was because of their desire for the sea. The seamen thought the sea was a nice thrill. The sea would make the seamen's hearts "begin... to beat" (33-34). The seamen also believe that the sea represents greatness. For instance the seamen think the sea is "bold" (40). Also, the seamen believe that the sea is "graced by God" (41). Overall, the seamen have a desire for the sea because they believe it brings a thrill and is great.
The speaker in "The Wanderer" says: "And so he knows it, he who must / forgo for a long time / the counsels / of his beloved lord" (lines 37-38). How might the speaker feel about this situation? Explain your answer with evidence from the text.

What are the three areas of your life in which writing will be important?
The three areas of one's life in which writing will be important is one's personal life, academic life, and professional life.
The narrator of "The Pardoner's Tale" says that the three rioters "... made their bargain, swore with appetite, / These three, to live and die for one another / As brother-born might swear to his born brother." Briefly describe their vow and explain what causes them to abandon their promise to one other.
The three rioters vow to one another within the tale. There vow has to do with caring for one another. The Pardoner explains that the rioters made a bargain. Also, they swore with an appetite. The vow states that they have to live for one another. Also, they must die for one another. They are like brothers. The rioters then broke their vow. They abandoned their promise when they sinned. In the end, the rioters all killed each other out of greed. Therefore, greed made them abandon their promises.
Describe how we find King Hrothgar and his response to learning that Beowulf has come to his kingdom.
We find King Hrothgar feeling sad about Grendel, and the damage that Grendel has caused his kingdom. For instance, Grendel killed some of his men, which has lead Hrothgar's living men to desert Hrothgar's Hall. King Hrothgar is happy that Beowulf has come to his kingdom and is willing to give Beowulf treasure, because Beowulf's father was close with Hrothgar and because Beowulf will try and defeat Grendel.
It has been suggested what the wall in "The Wanderer" might symbolize. Now expand that thought by writing one or two paragraphs in which you explain why that symbolism is appropriate. Use examples from the poem to support your position.
The wall in "The Wanderer" symbolizes desolation and war. The desolation of the wall can be observed when the speaker describes it. For example, the author states that the wall is "deprived of joy" and that the "halls decay" (78). Since the wall is joyless and decaying, nobody is there. Thus it's desolate. This desolation is similar to the one that was left by war. Since the poem was written in Anglo-Saxon times, the wall's condition could represent the bad condition of war. The symbolism is appropriate because of the historical context and the speaker's own condition. The speaker is a wander who is lonesome. Like the speaker, the wall is also desolate. Hence, the two mirror each other and symbolize the depressing times. Historically, there was a lot of war and violence during the time the poem was written. The wall is left decaying, like the towns and people within the war. Therefore, the symbolism is appropriate.
Beginning at line 43 of "The Wife's Lament," the speaker makes an attempt to console herself with certain thoughts regarding her husband. What are these thoughts? Is the speaker successful? Explain your responses.
The wife explains how her husband is serious, tough, cheerful, sad, caring, joyful. She also thinks about how her husband is also banished and beneath a stormy cliff. Since she ends up thinking her husband isn't cheerful like she thought, the wife isn't successful.

The pagan Germans, Greeks, and other ancient peoples believed that fame and glory are the only things that will survive a human being's death. What evidence do you find in Beowulf of the importance placed on a person's public reputation? Write an essay in which you use examples from the poem to support your answer.
There is much evidence throughout the poem Beowulf to support the statement that there is much importance placed on a person's public reputation. In the very beginning of the poem, the reason that Beowulf is asked to help Hrothgar's people is because of his reputation that he is "greater/ And stronger than anyone anywhere in this world" (110-111). The poem even gave a tribute to Shield Sheafson, who was known as one of the greats.

Is good a more powerful force than evil in the modern world? Explain your opinion.
Unlike in the epic poem Beowulf, I would have to say that evil is a more powerful force than good in the modern world. Today, not many people want to step up and be an epic hero for the people. Also, in general, people just aren't capable of stopping evil. I hear about and see so many evil things as well. Therefore, evil is a much more powerful force than good in the modern world.
Describe the setting where Beowulf fights Grendel's mother.
When Beowulf fights Grendel's mother, the setting takes place in a swampy lake. To be more specific, the setting takes place underwater in a cave. After Beowulf defeats Grendel's mother, the place brightens up.
Revise this paragraph by circling repeated words, and replacing at least three of them with synonyms. When I go to see a performance I like to sit up close so I can see well. It is exciting to see the performances of the actors and actresses. Seeing the action is very important to me. It's important to me not to miss one minute of the play.

All epic heroes overcome powerful forces that arise from their particular ways of life. Modern heroes may conquer the unknowns of outer space or bring food or medicine to hungry people. The Anglo-Saxon hero slew monsters. Of course, monsters exist only in fantasy. But a monster may be an archetypal symbol for some broader problem or challenge a society faces. What challenges of Anglo-Saxon life are represented by the monsters Beowulf faces? Use your knowledge of Anglo-Saxon society and of Beowulf. Write a paragraph explaining your answer. To support your point, use specific references, including at least one example of imagery, from the poem.
Within the epic poem Beowulf, monsters are an archetypal symbol for the problem of warfare and sickness. In Anglo-Saxon times, there was much warfare and sickness due to the invasions. People were constantly attacked by both the sickness and war. For instance, the poem stated that the Monster would attack only in the "darkness", which made his attacks surprising. Similarly, the sickness and war would often be random and arise without notice. Furthermore, Grendel would kill many in Herot Hall, spilling the humans' blood, which could be a symbol of battle. therefore, the monsters represent the hard times to survival (sickness and war) that humans faced in Anglo-Saxon times.
Most of the poems and stories of the Anglo-Saxon period were passed along by the oral tradition. In an essay, tell how the use of features such as the kenning and caesura may have helped maintain this oral tradition. Illustrate your explanation with examples from "The Wanderer,"
Within the poem, caesuras help the poem be remembered. Within the poem, the line "So I, often wretched and sorrowful" has a pause in it (19). This pause is a caesura. The caesura gives the poem rhythm. Often times, rhythmic things can become easier to remember. If the poem is easily remembered it can be told easier. Thus, it can be passed on from generation to generation easier. The kennings within the poem also allow for remembrance. For instance, instead of using the word mind, the author uses the phrase "spirit-chest" (13). The phrase spirit-chest can be seen as more interesting. Often times interesting and unique things are more easily remembered. Hence, they are more easily remembered than common words. If the poem is more easily remembered, it can be told more easily and many times. Thus, it can be passed on better orally from generation to generation.
Which pilgrim would most likely give absolution to a character in The Canterbury Tales? Explain your reasoning. a. Friar b. Cook c. Merchant d. Wife of Bath

What does "The Pardoner's Tale" suggest about the Pardoner? Explain your answer. a. He believes that Death is the greatest enemy. b. He admires the bravery of the three rioters. c. He believes greed is worse than dying. d. He does not hold to any absolute truths.
c. He believes greed is worse than dying. "The Pardoner's Tale" suggests that greed is worse than dying. The three rioters search for death, but then find riches. Even though each character wanted the riches for themselves, they all ended up dying. Thus, greed got in the way. Therefore greed is worse than dying because it ultimately can lead to death itself.
