External Components of Computer
Input Device-Optical Character Reader
OCR (optical character recognition) is the recognition of printed or written text characters by a computer. This involves photoscanning of the text character-by-character, analysis of the scanned-in image, and then translation of the character image into character codes, such as ASCII, commonly used in data processing.
Output Device-Multimedia Projector
A multimedia projector is a compact, high resolution, full-color projector capable of projecting text, images, video and audio content. Typically the projector will feature inputs for a computer, DVD player, VCR, CD player and storage device.
Input Device-Chip and Pin Reader
In use, the smart card is placed into a PIN pad terminal or modified swipe-card reader, which accesses the chip in the card. The user enters a 4-digit PIN that is checked against the information stored on the card. If the entered PIN matches the stored value, the transaction is permitted to proceed.
Input Device-Magnetic Stripe Reader
A magnetic stripe reader, also called a magstripe reader, is a hardware device that reads the information encoded in the magnetic stripe located on the back of a plastic badge. ... The magnetic stripe on the back of a badge is composed of iron-based magnetic particles encased in plastic-like tape.
Input Device-Microphone
Microphone is used to input sound into the computer.Common uses of microphones include recording voice and having a vocal conversation across the internet.
Input Device-Web Cam
Web Cam's are used to capture and input moving picture/video into a computer.Web Cam's allow online face to face conversations to take place as well as video-conferencing.
Input Device-Barcode Reader
A barcode reader (or barcode scanner) is an electronic device that can read and output printed barcodes to a computer. Like a flatbed scanner, it consists of a light source, a lens and a light sensor translating optical impulses into electrical ones.
Input Device-Numeric Keypad
A numeric keypad, number pad, numpad, or ten key, is the palm-sized, 17-key section of a standard computer keyboard, usually on the far right. It provides calculator-style efficiency for entering numbers.
Output Device-TFT Monitor
A thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT LCD) is a variant of a liquid-crystal display (LCD) that uses thin-film-transistor (TFT) technology to improve image qualities such as addressability and contrast.
Input Device-Digital Camera
Digital Camera's are used to capture and store digital image. The digital image can then be transfered to a computer for storage and editing.
Input Devices
Input devices are pieces of hardware that get raw data into the computer ready for processing. Processing involves taking raw data and turning it into more useful information. Input devices fall into two categories: Manual Input Devices - Need to be operated by a human to input information Automatic Input Devices - Can input information on their own.
Input Device-Magnetic Ink Character Recognition
MICR (magnetic ink character recognition) is a technology used to verify the legitimacy or originality of paper documents, especially checks. Special ink, which is sensitive to magnetic fields, is used in the printing of certain characters on the original documents.
Input Device-Optical Mark Reader
Optical Mark reading (OMR) is a method of entering data into a computer system. Optical Mark Readers reads pencil or pen marks made in pre-defined positions on paper forms as responses to questions or tick list prompts.
Output Device-Dot Matrix Printer
Sometimes called impact matrix printing or dot matrix printing, this is a type of computer printing which uses a print head that moves back-and-forth, or in an up-and-down motion, on the page and prints by impact, striking an ink-soaked cloth ribbon against the paper, much like the print mechanism on a typewriter.
Input Device-Keyboard
The Qwerty Keyboard is used to input text commands into computer.
Output Device-CRT Monitor
The cathode ray tube (CRT) is a vacuum tube that contains one or more electron guns and a phosphorescent screen, and is used to display images. It modulates, accelerates, and deflects electron beam(s) onto the screen to create the images.
Input Device-Mouse
The mouse is used to control a pointer on a screen. The pointer can be used to input commands into a computer such as opening opening files and selecting options.
Input Device-Scanner
The scanner is used to enter hardcopy information (printouts or photographs for example) into the computer.Scanner essentially turn hardcopy information into digital information.
Input Device-Touch Screen
a display device which allows the user to interact with a computer by touching areas on the screen.
input Device-Light Pen
a handheld pen-like photosensitive device held to the display screen of a computer terminal for passing information to the computer.a handheld light-emitting device used for reading barcodes.
Output Device-Plotter
a piece of equipment that marks out points on a chart.
Output Device-Inkjet Printer
a printer in which the characters are formed by minute jets of ink.
Output Device-Laser Printer
a printer linked to a computer producing good-quality printed material by using a laser to form a pattern of electrostatically charged dots on a light-sensitive drum, which attract toner (or dry ink powder). The toner is transferred to a piece of paper and fixed by a heating process.
Output Device-Speakers
the presiding officer in a legislative assembly, especially the House of Commons.
