MEU deployment

Usually deploy for 6-7 months carrying enough supplies for the MEU to conduct operations ashore for 15 days, beyond which they are normally sustained through integrated naval logistics systems -Upon return from deployment, ARG/MEUs remain in standby status for 30-60 days prepared for immediate redeployment in response to crisis

A key feature of a MAGTF

is it's expandability and being able to expand the force rather than replace it with a larger one -This promotes continuity of operations

State the mission of your unit and relationship to MAGTF

The Official Mission of the Marine Corps

- Was established in the 1952 Amendment to the National Security Act of 1947 -"Marines are trained, organized and equipped for offensive amphibious employment and as a force of readiness"

The Aviation Combat Element (ACE) consists of

-An aviation headquarters with air control agencies, aircraft squadrons or groups and logistics groups - The ACE may operate from ships or from austere expeditionary locations ashore and can readily transition between them without loss of capability

Identify location of Marine Expeditionary Forces: I MEF

-Based in Southern California and Arizona

Describe the 4 elements of a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU)

-Commanded by a Colonel -Embarked aboard Navy amphibious ready groups (ARGs) form ARG/MEUs which provide a continuous, forward naval presence in key regions to conduct steady state security cooperation, military engagement and deterrence as well as immediate response to crises and contingencies 1. Command Element 2. Ground Combat Element 3. Aviation Combat Element 4. Logistics Combat Element

Headquarter Marine Corps

-Consists of the Commandant of the Marine Corps and those staff agencies that advise and assist the Commandant in discharging those responsibilities prescribed by law and higher authority - There is the executive part of the Department of the Navy a HQMC and the function is to assist the Secretary of the Navy in carrying out his responsibilities

Describe a Special Purpose MAGTF (Marine Air-Ground Task Force) (SPMAGTF)

-For situations where a MEU or other unit is either inappropriate or unavailable - Can be any size, but usually no larger than a MEU, with tailored capabilities required to accomplish a particular mission -Regimental-level headquarters often assume the role as a SPMGTF command element and may conduct training in anticipated mission skills prior to establishment -SPMAGTF may deploy using commercial shipping or aircraft, intertheater airlift, amphibious shipping or organic Marine aviation

Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB)

-General Officer-led MAGTF built around a Regimental Landing Team (RLT) as the GCE, a Marine Air Group (MAG) as the ACE, and a Combat Logistics Group at the LCE -Mid-size MAGTFs, MEB conduct major security operations, respond to larger crises or contigencies or participate in major operations and campaigns -They provide the building blocks for forcible entry and other power projection operations, providing the landing forces with for amphibious assault and the fly-in echelons that "marry up" with equipment and supplies delivered by maritime pre-positioning ships -Number approximately 16,000 Marines and Sailors once all units assigned - Smallest MAGTFs capable of performing all 6 functions of Marine Aviation

Command Element (CE)

-Headquarters of the MAGTF as well as other units that provide intelligence, communications, and administrative support -Task: Provide the command and control capabilities necessary for effective planning, execution and assessment of operations -Additionally, the CE can exercise command and control within a joint task force from the sea or ashore and act as a joint task force headquarters core element

Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF)

-Led by Lieutenant General -Principle warfighting organization of the marine corps -In addition to warfighting role, MEF routinely task-organize subordinate units into smaller MAGTFs or other formations to support the mission requirements -Vary in size with the largest being 40,000 marines and sailors - Can sustain for 60 days which can be extended through external support from other services or host nations

Aviation Combat Element

-Organizes to conduct air operations, project combat power and contribute to battlespace dominance in support of the MAGTF's mission by performing some or all of the six functions of marine aviation: 1. Antiair warfare 2. Assault support 3. Electronic warfare 4. Offensive air support 5. Air reconnaissance 6. Control of aircraft and missiles

Ground Combat Element

-Organizes to conduct ground operations in support of the MAGTF's mission. -Usually forms around infantry organization reinforced with artillery, reconnaissance, light armored reconnaissance, assault amphibian, tank and engineer forces -The only MAGTF unit that can seize and occupy terrain

Describe the purpose of Maritime Prepositioning Forces (MPF)

-Primary role is for rapid response to regional contigencies -Consists of the maritime prepositioning ships squadron (MPSRON), Navy support element, and MAGTF fly-in Echelon -Can respond to combat or humanitarian missions

Each Standing MEF consists of

-a permanent Command Element (CE) and one Marine Division, MAW and FSSG

Alert Contingency MAGTF

-an important type of SPMAGTF -Each MEF maintains an alert contingency MAGTF as an on-call, rapid crisis response force -They should be ready to deploy at a moment's notice and equipment in pre-staged locations for immediate embarkation -Usually airlifts to a secure airfield and carries its initial sustainment with the size and weight kept to an absolute minimum -They can deploy independently or in conjunction with amphibious maritime pre-positioning or other expeditionary forces

Maritime Prepositioning forces are organized into

-two maritime prepositioing Ship Squadrons, each comprising 4 to 6 MPF ships as well as additional prepositioning ships dedicated to other military services -Each MPS squadron carries sufficient supplies to sustain 16,000 Marine Expeditionary Brigade and Navy personnel for up to 30 days - A unique characteristic of the MPF is that the embarked equipment is maintained aboard ship and is combat ready immediately upon offload -Movement and arrival of MPSRON, the Navy support element and MAGTF fly-in echelon must be integral parts of the MAGTF commander's overall concept of operations in order to achieve the desired tempo of force buildup and sustainment ashore
