Marcel Duchamp, Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2, 1912, Cubist-Inspired. 1. The colors and fragmented planes align with analytical cubism, however, Duchamp wanted to explore the figures movement rather than creating new perspectives on the object. 2. The figure seems androgynous and machine-like, with cylindrical shapes and vague human characteristics. 3. Duchamp became inspired by Muybridge, and wanted to convey motion within his works by tracking every motion.
Nude Descending
Georges Braque, Large Nude, 1908, Cubism 1. Braque was inspired by Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon painting which led him to turn to cubism. We can see this influence in the nude subject matter, and the rose colored background. 2. The figure has a mask-like face and heavy contour lines, inspired by African masks that traveled around galleries during this time. 3. The figure is quite muscular, and likely also inspired by Matisse's Blue Nude.
