12. Explain why roofer removing old asbestos roofs are more at danger of developing lung cancer than a person who installs asbestos flooring.

Since the roofer is taking apart the roofing, they are breaking up the fibers and chemicals in the roof and spoofing it up in their faces. Whereas, a person who is putting in flooring is just setting down the floor and waxing over it.

11. Explain how the inhalation of asbestos fibers can lead to lung cancer.

Since, asbestos is a natural mineral with crystalline structured, long and then fiber, it is easy to breath them in and get in your lungs, possibly causing lung cancer or some other type of disease.

14. Silk is natural sources of natural fibers. How is silk produced by the body of the silkworm?

They produce the fiber in their bodies and form it from a single strand that measures 1 to 2km.

13. Describe three sources of natural fibers. Provide an example of each type of natural fiber.

Animals: hair, fur, webbing. Plants: seeds and fruit. Minerals: fiberglass

16. Fibers collected as trace evidence are often consisted to be class evidence and not individual evidence. For example, the presence of white cotton fiber found on a suspect and found on a victim at a crime scene is not enough evidence to convict the suspect. Justify this statement.

In different cases, a fiber can be identified but not connected to a specific person, rather just a certain group of fibers.

4. Mineral fibers such as asbestos are very durable. Theses fibers are used in all of the following except:

a. rope

9. A fiber is collected at a crime scene. When viewed under a compound microscope, what two traits would indicate that the fiber was a human hair and not a piece of fiber obtained form an article of clothing? (Choose 2)

a. the presence of a cuticle b. a medullary index of 0.33 or less

8. Fibers are an excellent source of trace evidence because:

a. they are easily transferred from victim to suspect

2. The shiny nature of silk can be related to:

b. its ability to refract light

3. What characteristics of cotton make it a great source of fiber for clothing?

c. the fibers are easily woven and dyed

7. Which of the following observations are used to help identify a specific fiber?

d. all of the above

6. A characteristic of natural fibers is that they:

d. are affected by microscopic organisms

1. Natural fibers can be harvested from:

d. plants, animals, and minerals

5. All of the following are characteristics of a synthetic fiber except:

d. they do not contain any natural fibers.

10. Describe the weave patterns of each of the fabrics pictured below. Justify your answer. (100% nylon rope)

i. Not durable. ii. Tends to snag iii. The shiny surface. iv. high light reflectance. v. light fiction with other garments.

10. Describe the weave patterns of each of the fabrics pictured below. Justify your answer. (100% Spandex Nylon)

i. Not durable. ii. Tends to snag and break during wear. iii. light fiction with other garments.

10. Describe the weave patterns of each of the fabrics pictured below. Justify your answer. (100% cotton BLEND)

i. open weave. ii. easily distorted with water and washing.

10. Describe the weave patterns of each of the fabrics pictured below. Justify your answer. (100% cotton)

i. open weave. ii. easily distorted with water and washing. iii. stretches in one direction only.

10. Describe the weave patterns of each of the fabrics pictured below. Justify your answer. (100% wool)

i. very strong. ii. dense and compact. iii. different faces. iv. diagonal design. v. soft and pliable

15. A crime-scene investigator views two small, red fibers. One fiber was obtained from the crime scene off the victim's body, and the other red fiber was removed from the cuff of the suspect's pants. Although the two fibers appear to be from the same fabric, the crime-scene investigator determines that the two fibers are indeed very different. List five other characteristics of the fibers that can be detected under a compound microscope that could be used to distinguish the two red fibers.

kinkiness/curliness that you could see under a microscope. Without a microscope, a person might be able to feel that one fiber is kinkier and stiffer than the other.
