Joint origin

It is the reference point for the joint on this component.

Taper angle in extrude

Make something extrude outward or inward so that it points inward or flares outward

Construction geometry line

Right-click the line and choose Sketch ➤ Normal/Construction. any geometry that does not represent actual part geometry, but instead as a reference for other geometries

Press/Pull Command

Can extrude, offset, and fillet edges and faces. Found under modify

What to do if a sketch disappears

Find it under the the component name in the browser and click on the eye

Objects to cut (extrude dialogue)

Chose what objects will be affected by extrude so that multiple objects are not cut by an extrusion that should only cut through one

Mirror command

Found under create Creates a duplicate of a feature, body, component, or face over a plane Dialogue box includes pattern type (feature, body, component, or face), object (chose what will be duplicated) mirror plane (either x, y, z, or a construction plane) and compute option.

Offset

Found under modify in the sketch mode Duplicate sketch geometry at a specified distance from the original.

Direct Modeling Mode

Fusion is not recording history (as it would if you were in parametric mode). With direct modeling, you can change the imported model even though no history, sketches, or relationships were imported with it. Allows you to change on part without affecting other parts

Component definition

In Fusion 360, a component is a part that is capable of motion and has its own unique origin. A component can also serve as a container for a variety of design objects, including: Bodies Sketches Construction geometry Decals Other components

Assemble Tools

New Component Joint As-Built Joint Joint Origin Rigid Group Drive Joints Motion Link Enable Contact Sets Enable All Contact

Data Panel

Nine little boxes in the top left corner, shows other projects

Different kinds of construction planes

Offset Plane Plane at angle Tangent plane Midplane Plane through two edges Plane through three points Plane tangent to face at point Plane along path

Extrude dialogue box options

Profile (select where to extrude from), start (chose the profile plane, an offset plane, or from an object), direction (one way, two ways, symmetrical), extent (input distance, to another object, or through an object), and operation (join, cut, intersect, new body, new component) Under cut, objects to cut option is availableD

Axis through two points

Under construct Create a line through two points

Plane along path

Under construct Create a plan along a path like the edge of a cylinder using ratios to tell where to put the plane

Tangent Plane

Under construct Create a plane that is adjacent to a cylinder or sphere in a way that it only touches the cylinder/sphere at one line

Offset Plane

Under construct Create a plane that is at a set distance from the face that was used as a reference point to create it

Plane at Angle

Under construct Create a plane that is at an angle from the edge/line that was used as a reference point

Midplane

Under construct Create a plane that is halfway between two faces

Point at center of torus/circle/sphere

Under construct Create a point at the center of a torus, circle, or sphere

Axis through cylinder/cone/taurus

Under construct Creates a line through the center of a cylinder, cone, or torus

New Component

Under create Creates a new component Options include Empty component or From bodies, name of the component, parent (automatically selects the whole file) , activate (automatically selected) and sheet metal component (not selected). New components appear at the bottom of the browser

Sweep

Under create Like a mixture of extrude and revolve, except it works along a path. Can also be cut to remove part of a body or component along a path

Project

Under create in the sketch mode Adds the sketch geometry of a pre-existing body or component onto a sketch

Degrees of freedom in Fusion vs in other CAD programs

With other CAD tools, you use a constraint or mate to limit one or two degrees of freedom at a time, then add constraints or mates until you have enough degrees of freedom. In contrast, with Fusion 360 you begin by limiting all degrees of freedom and then select a joint motion type that specifies degrees of freedom. This approach allows you to obtain the required degrees of freedom all at once, in one command.

Timeline Bar

A bar at the bottom of your screen that captures your design feature history; it allows you to modify your history directly.

Toolbar

A small bar that appears at the top of a window; it displays buttons you can click to quickly choose a command.

How to create arcs using the line command

Click on hold when created a line to create an arc, which uses the tangent constraint to create the arc

Component vs bodies

Components are the building blocks that make up assemblies, and a body is one of the elements that make up a component. Each component contains one or more bodies, as well as its own set of origin planes, sketches, construction geometry, joints, and other elements.

Where to find construction planes

Construct

Equal

Found under constraint Makes lines the same length and circles have the same radius. If one is changed, the other changes as well

Concentric

Found under constraint Makes two circles have the same center point

Coincident constraint

Found under constraints in the sketch workspace Constrains points to other geometries in sketches (eg moves a point to a line)

Body definition

In Fusion 360, a body is any continuous 3D shape. That might be a sphere, cube, cone, etc. Whenever you create a 2D sketch in Fusion 360, and then extrude it into a 3D shape, you automatically create a body.

What can move/copy do?

Move a body or component in any direction Make a copy a component Move something using a pivot to change the angle of a body

Create Tools

New Component Create sketch Create form Derive Extrude Revolve Sweep Loft Rib Web Hole Thread Box Cylinder Sphere Torus Coil Pipe Pattern Mirror Thicken Boundary Fill Create Mesh

Modify Tools

Press Pull Fillet Chamfer Shell Draft Scale Combine Offset Face Replace Face Split Face Split Body Silhouette Split Move/Copy Align Delete

Component properties

Right-click a component and select Properties to assign a part number, part name, and description that will appear on the bill of materials (BOM).

Browser

Shows the different parts of a file, on the left

Joint command

Under assemble Joins two components together

Axis perpendicular at point

Under construct Create a line perpendicular to a point (going through it)

Dimensions

Under create in the sketch workspace

Isolate Command

Use the Isolate command to temporarily hide the geometry that you won't be referencing. From the isolated geometry, create and activate a connecting rod component. This process allows you to capture a timeline for the construction of this component outside the context of the entire assembly. Use command-click

Movement in bodies vs component

When a body is moved, its origin stays behind, while when a component is moved its origin moves with it If you need to move an object or give it motion, make sure it has its own component.

Copy/paste

You can create a copy that automatically updates whenever the original updates.

Copy/paste new

You can create a copy that doesn't update with the original.
