ESSAY: Contrast Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia
Melanesia is composed of continental islands. The inhabitants are short and black-skinned. Europeans visited these remote islands last. Micronesia is made up of smaller islands. These islands are atolls, formed by coral. Since the islands have poor soil, the inhabitants rely on fishing for survival. These islands have little elevations. The people who live in Micronesia are taller and lighter-skinned than those in Melanesia. The islands of Polynesia developed from volcanoes. Their soil is rich and their elevation, unlike Micronesia's, is high. The inhabitants have lighter skin and wavier hair than people elsewhere in the Pacific Islands.
