Infinitive
to plus Verb - it can be used as a noun, adjective or adverb
Verb plus Preposition plus Gerund - think about, insist on, worry about
Example: Don't worry about missing the class
Gerund - As the object of the verb
Example: I always enjoys traveling on business
Adjective plus Preposition plus Gerund - Curious, about, afraid of, interested in
Example: I am curious about learning photography
Gerund - As the subject of a sentence
Example: Training new resources is manager's responsibility
Infinitive - As the object of a verb
Example: We decided to discuss resource benefits.

Example: We hoped to finish the assignment on Monday.
Following a verb: (gerund) - Gerunds and infinitives both can replace a noun as a object of the verb. That depend on the main verb in the sentence.
Example: we anticipate having the assignment done by Monday (Gerund)

Following a preposition : (Gerunds)
Gerunds only can follow a preposition. Infinitive cannot follow a preposition
