Dropbox

A tool in D2L that allows faculty to set up assignments that students can turn in online. Faculty create a folder in Dropbox for each assignment, and then students turn in assignments by uploading documents to the Dropbox folder. Once assignments are submitted, faculty can view them online, download them, check submission times, enter a grade, add qualitative feedback, and return submissions with comments, all from within the Dropbox tool. Faculty can also check for plagiarism through the Dropbox using an application called TurnItIn.

Collaborate online classrooms allow instructors and students to connect in real-time, integrating technologies such as audio, video, slide shows or PowerPoint presentations, virtual whiteboards, screen-sharing, text chatting, polling, and online break-out groups.

Scopia Desktop

A voice, video and data conferencing application that allows participants from up to 28 locations to simultaneously join a video conference, record the meeting, and share presentations, spreadsheets, documents and images.

VoiceThread

A web-based application that allows users to place collections of media-like images, videos, documents and presentations at the center of an asynchronous conversation. A VoiceThread allows people to have conversations and to make comments using any mix of text, a microphone, a web cam, a telephone or uploaded audio file.

Wiki

A website that allows collaborative changes, contributions or corrections of its content and structure by its users. In online learning, students work together to create and edit the wiki's content, which is related to the topic of the class.

Instant Messaging

Allows users to communicate through real-time text transmission online or by phone. It is a type of chat through which short messages are transmitted bi-directionally between two or more people.

COIL

A GNLE program at the SUNY Global Center in New York City. COIL developed from the efforts of a group of SUNY faculty innovators who were each exploring ways to bring international students into their classrooms using technology.

Flipped Classroom

A class format in which traditional in-class activities, like lectures and group discussion, are completed online and activities that typically are completed outside of class, like individual assignments and collaborative work, are completed during face-to-face class meetings. This type of classroom utilizes hybrid or blended learning.

Poll Everywhere

A classroom response system that uses mobile phones, Twitter, and the web to facilitate classroom participation. It allows members of an audience to respond to questions or cast votes that are displayed in real-time on charts on a webpage or in presentation software (i.e., PowerPoint, Keynote, or Prezi.)

CIC or Comprehensive Internationalization Committee

A committee at DePaul University that coordinates various aspects of its international activities. DePaul seeks meaningful relationships with international partners, aimed at generating transformative experiences for students, faculty and staff at both institutions. Faculty from all of DePaul's colleges and schools are members of the CIC.

SoftChalk Cloud

A content authoring application that enables the transformation of existing course materials into interactive and engaging e-learning content. It allows educators to build, customize, and personalize content by combining their own materials with rich media (video, audio, images), interactive activities, quizzes and text.

Social Network

A dedicated website or other application that enables users to communicate with each other by posting information, comments, messages, images, etc. Internet-based social media programs can be used to make connections with friends, family, classmates and clients. These programs show the relationships between individuals and help them make new contacts.

FITS

A department at DePaul University that supports faculty in using technology to enhance teaching and learning. FITS services fall into the following three key categories: course design and enhancement, faculty development, and instructional technology support.

DOTS

A faculty development program that trains and assists faculty to become successful facilitators of online learning. Faculty are introduced to online-learning best practices, hands-on innovative use of technology, and quality standards for course development across all delivery formats. In addition, they are guided through the development of exemplary course sites for online and blended instruction.

CourseSites

A hosted online course creation service that allows individual educators to add a web-based component to their courses or even host an entire course online. A user can create up to 5 course websites for free.

Mobile Learning

A learning activity that is accessed through a mobile device. Examples include polling, mobile flashcards, and podcasts.

Moodle

A learning management system that is available as a free web application. Educators can use Moodle to create effective online learning websites.

GNLE

A partnership between educational institutions that encourages students to collaborate with (and learn about) students in classrooms elsewhere on the planet. GNLEs are designed to facilitate dialogue and collaboration across and within groups of students in order to develop greater understanding and competencies for global work and citizenship.

LMS or learning management system

A software application or web-based technology that allows educators to create and deliver online courses or training. A typical learning management system provides an instructor with a platform for creating and delivering content, monitoring student participation, and assessing student performance. It may also provide interactive features like online meeting rooms and discussion forums.

ITC or instructional technology consultant

A specialist in educational technology. The FITS staff is comprised of 11 full-time instructional technology consultants who work with DePaul faculty and staff across campus.

Google Tools

A suite of online applications provided at no cost by Google. Many of these applications can be used to facilitate online learning, particularly Google Hangout and Google Docs.

Online Rooms

A synchronous tool integrated into the D2L learning management system; it provides a platform that allows students, faculty, guest speakers and others who are off-site to meet for an online, synchronous class session.

Liaison

Faculty Instructional Technology Service (FITS) department at DePaul has staff members who act as liaisons between FITS and a specific college or department within the university.

GLE

GLE or Global Learning Experience is the name for DePaul's program that supports faculty teaching in globally networked learning environments.

Asynchronous

Means not occurring at the same time. It is used to describe online courses in which instructors provide materials, lectures, tests, and assignments that can be accessed within a learning management system at any time.

Synchronous

Means occurring at the same time. In these types of classes, students are required to attend a class in-person at the same time or participate in an online meeting or activity at the same, specific time.

ICT or information and communication technology

Refers to any communication device or application, such as radio, television, cellular phones and computer and network hardware and software, as well as the various services and applications associated with them, such as videoconferencing and distance learning.

Learning Objectives

Statements that describe what students are expected to learn from a lesson, online module or class. A learning objective provides a measurable description of the knowledge, skills and attitudes the student will have gained when the instruction ends.

Google Hangout

An online application that allows groups of up to 10 users to chat, share photos or engage in a live video call. The application works on computers and Android and Apple mobile devices.

Skype

An online application that allows users to make one-to-one video and voice calls and to share instant messages and files with other Skype users for free. For a small fee, it allows up to 10 people to participate in group video and voice calls, make calls to landlines worldwide, and send text messages.

Google Drive

An online application that is used to store and share files. Users can upload or create files, as well as share files and collaborate with others in real time. Up to 15GB of storage is provided at no charge.

Ning

An online service that allows users to create, customize, and share social networks.

Blended

Courses that combine face-to-face interaction with web-based interaction. For example, in-class discussions and live lectures may be combined with online discussion boards, wikis, and online quizzes. Classes are held, in part, through online delivery and, in part, through face-to-face class meetings.

Hybrid

Courses that combine face-to-face interaction with web-based interaction. For example, in-class discussions and live lectures may be combined with online discussion boards, wikis, and online quizzes. Vision 2018

DePaul University's current strategic plan. It outlines the university's vision for its future and translates this vision into goals and objectives and a sequence of steps that it will follow to achieve them by 2018.

D2L

DePaul's learning management system. It is an online environment wherein instructors may create a course website and give students online access to course syllabi, assignments, readings, electronic dropboxes, online quizzes, discussion boards, grades and more.

Personal Response System

Enables students to respond to questions through a personal device, such as an iClicker or a mobile phone.
