13. Approach shot

- A shot from a short distance to reach the green; usually less than 100 yards for most golfers.

What is shooting par mean on an 18 hole Golf Course?

- Shooting par is typically 72 strokes to complete a round of 18 holes.

1. Name the three types of grips

Ten finger grip (known as baseball grip), the interlocking grip and the overlapping grip. Grip used by the golfer is a personal choice based on how comfortable.

Addressing the ball (where should the ball be played in your stance based on each club?)

Where the player is setting up to take a shot. Typically the longer club, the further the ball should be in the player's stance. (example: longer irons are played further up in the stance, middle irons typically in the middle and shorter irons are usually played further back in the stance).

a low, short shot that occurs around the green

6. Chip and Run

a low, short shot which is hit a little higher (but still a low trajectory) than a regular chip shot which hits the green and rolls toward the pin.

What is Medal Play?

also known as stroke play; this is the scoring system that counts each stroke per hole.

24. Fairway

area from the tee box to the green; closely mowed grass.

27. Apron

area of grass in front of the green where the fairway transitions into the green.

23. Sand Traps

areas just off the green or half way down the fairway which are filled with sand.

21. Divot

displaced grass causing exposure of dirt on a golf course.

7. Topping

is when the golfer contacts the top of the golf ball with the club face which causes the ball to roll or bounce from point of contact.

8. Coming off the ball

is when the golfer pulls his head or front side away from the ball as he is swinging; often times coming off the ball when swinging causes a shorter shot that slices or fades (to the right for a right handed golfer).

18. Par

measure of strokes it takes to finish a hole.

26. Bunker

much like a sand trap but generally deeper and incorporates a raised lip or barrier.

one shot over par

17. Birdie

one shot under par.

25. Handicap

refers to the number of strokes a golfer may deduct from his final score to that of a scratch golfer. A scratch golfer is a par golfer; averaging 72 per 18 holes of golf.

3. Away

the order in which the players hit. The player who is furthest from the hole is considered to be away

the short cut grass around the edge of the green.

4. Putt

the stroke used by the golfer when on the green

this is a scoring system that gives the player/team one point for making the best score on the hole.

two shots under par

typical club used from the tee box; also called the 1 Wood.

28. Fore

verbal warning to other golfers on the course that a ball is incoming.

9. Slice

when a golfer hits a shot that goes to the right side of the fairway (right handed golfer).

10. Hook

when a golfer hits a shot that turns or draws to the left. (right handed golfer).

16. Long Irons

3 iron and 4 iron (there is a 2 iron but it is rarely used)

15. Mid Irons

5 iron, 6 iron and 7 iron

12. Pitch shot

A shot which tends to have a high trajectory and usually rolls less. This shot is used to place the ball on the green; pitch shot is usually hit from a short distance from the green just below the apron.

How many are typically in a bag? There can be up to 14 clubs officially in a golf bag. The 13 typical clubs are: #1Wood (Driver), #3 Wood, #5 Wood. The long irons: 3 iron and 4 iron. The middle irons: 5 iron, 6 iron and 7 iron. The short irons: 8 iron and 9 iron and a (PW) pitching wedge, the (SW) sand wedge as well as the putter
