- A monarchy is a government system in which ultimate power rests in the hands of one person who has inherited power and will maintain that power for life. An example of a monarchy is Saudi Arabia, Japan, or England. - An aristocracy is a type of government where power is placed in the hands of wealthy and important citizens. An example of an aristocracy would be France before the rise of Napoleon. - A democracy is government system in which all citizens have a say in their government. An example of a democracy is India or Finland.

Explain three differences between a dictatorship and a democracy.

- One difference is that in a dictatorship the leader has absolute authority while in a democracy the power of government is left up to the people. - Another difference is that in a dictatorship leaders are very oppressive towards their citizens. If the citizens are unhappy with government and stand up against it then they are met with force. In a democracy, if the people are unhappy with their leaders they will replace the leader with a new one. - A final example is that democratic government systems place checks on leaders to limit their power. In a dictatorship, there are no checks against the government. The dictator has unlimited power.

Describe Republics

- citizens elect leaders to run the government - allows elected representatives to pass laws (held accountable to the citizens) - popular form of government

Describe dictatorships

- people are ruled with fear - repression and oppression (take things away) - lack of fundamental rights and freedoms for citizens - the will of the people is suppressed (protests were met in force) - lack of checks and balance to protect against abuse (dictator is not held accountable - can't be removed: elections are rigged for him to win

Describe Limited monarchy.

- supreme power rests in a constitution (laws - even the monarchy had to follow - called the Rule of Law) - many have a legislative branch, known as Parliament, to balance the king's power (they right the laws) - constitutional monarchy - citizens have some voting rights (they generally get to choose who is in Parliament)

Describe absolute monarchy.

- supreme power rests with the decisions of one person - monarchies operated under the "divine right of kings" (God chose that person or that person's family to lead)

Paul votes for the person he thinks will best represent his beliefs to make the laws for the nation.

Why people began to question the rule of man and divine rights of kings. How is the rule of law different?

They questioned them because if leaders where chosen by God then they should do what is best for the people; the majority of rulers were tyrants. They were not doing what was best for the people, so how could they be chosen by God? This led to a concept known as rule of law. People began to write the laws down so they were be permanent and also to make sure that the monarch or dictator followed the rules as well. It is a system that helps maintain the interests of the citizens first and make sure leaders also follow the same rules as the citizens.

T/F: Some democracies have only allowed certain classes to be involved with government

True

Explain the difference between an indirect democracy and a direct democracy.

When all citizens in a nation vote and participate in government it is referred to as a direct democracy. However, many nations have large populations and use and indirect form of democracy instead. This is because if all votes for all citizens where counted, it could take months at a time for even simple issues. In an indirect form of democracy citizens elect people who have similar belief and values as they do to vote for them.
