Heat Energy

Ace your homework & exams now with Quizwiz!

Radiant heat energy

moves from an area of higher temperature to an area of cooler temperature

Convection particles

particles with higher energy move from one location to another carrying their energy with them.

Convection

the transfer of energy as heat by movement of the heated substance itself, as currents in fluids (liquids and gases)

Radiation

the transfer of energy through space without particles of matter colliding or moving to transfer the energy

Conduction transfer as heat

The transfer of energy as heat occurs between particles as they collide within a subtance or between two objects in contact

Convection heating

uneven heating can result in convection, both in the air and in water. This causes currents in the atmosphere (wind) and in bodies of water on earth which are important factors in weather and climate

Radiation energy

warms an object when it is absorbed

Conduction in materials

All materials do not conduct heat energy equally well.

How does Heat transfer?

Heat can transfer in three ways: conduction, convection, and radiation.

Conduction Example

If a plastic spoon and a metal spoon are placed in a hot liquid, the handle of the metal spoon will get hot quicker than the handle of the plastic spoon because heat is conducted better through metal than plastic

Poor conductors

Poor conductors of heat are called insulators

Conduction transfer

The energy transfers from an area of higher temperature to an area of lower temperature

How does heat transfer by radiation?

The heat transfers through space without the objects touching or the particles colliding. (Fire)

How can we use heat energy and transfer?

We keep warm by using insulators to keep heat in. We warm ourselves by a fire.

How does heat transfer by convection?

When particles in the liquid or gas move they take their heat with them from the warmer part to the cooler part. (Warm water currents in a lake.)

How does heat transfer by conduction?

When the objects come into contact with each other the heat is transferred. (Heating Pad)

Convection heat transfer

heat transfer occurs when particles with higher energy move from warmer to cooler parts of the fluid

Conduction

involves objects in direct contact
