Nativism is people born in America not wanting immigrants coming to the U.S. The U.S. viewed all immigrants as poor people just coming to the U.S. to use poor relief. They though immigrants would overwhelm the system, so they wanted to stop people from entering the U.S.

Philanthropy is private individuals helping the poor. Whereas poor relief/welfare is public and funded by the government.

The Great Depression is when banks went out of business which America to loose money and jobs. Poverty rose and was the worst it has ever been in the U.S.

This was aimed at industrial workers. This gave money to older people through pensions. Now money is taken out of paychecks to allow older people to use during retirement in the social security fund.

This was so poor relief could become less expensive. This was viewed as getting the poor people out of the towns.

similar: referring to race the U.S. signals out one group of people. In the 1800s Irish, today it could be African Americans. different: In the 1800s people believed that race was pre-determined before an individual was born. You were though to act the same as people did before you.
