True/False Values are your moral values or a sense of what is right or wrong that guides our behavior.

What's the purpose of a Human Sciences professional needing to understand the life course development model?

Using this approach can help you successfully meet the needs of your clients, patients and customers.

Researchers have found that there are certain protective factors that help keep families strong and able to cope with the challenges of life. These factors are:

an affirming communication style that enables family to calmly solve problems; an ability to draw on hope & spirituality in difficult times; equality & truth; flexibility to change based on circumstances but maintaining routines & rituals to cope with adversity; healthy with strong networks.

Resource development and sustainability relates to

an interest in protecting the environment while accommodating our growing needs

By having well individuals and strong families, the community can achieve

vitality

Integrative Elements include

1) Human Ecosystems Theory: connections between people and their physical, human-built, and social/behavioral environments 2) Life Course Development: developmental stages of individuals and families across time (ages, generations, events)

Identify the library resource: -located on the 1st floor -hub of tutoring services -private tutor services, learning teams, Supplemental Instruction sessions- -also offers Online Writing Lab (OWL)-great for getting feedback on writing assignments you may have BEFORE they are due!

Basic Human Needs are defined as

components of human existence that must be satisfied for individuals to develop their human capacity.

Sustainability can be incorporated into all aspects of the Human Sciences field:

-A hotel manager institutes a program that encourages guests to reuse towels, thus reducing the environmental impact of laundry; -An FCS teach educates children on the eight Rs: refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, repair, restore, re-purpose, redesign; -A fashion buyer responds to consumer demands by expanding the store's selection of organic clothing; -An interior designer encourages a client to follow Leaders in Energy and Environmental Design standards for a new building

True

True/False Values are your beliefs, attitudes, feelings, experiences and actions that you consider to be important.

The final cross-cutting theme of capacity building focuses on

developing knowledge and skills for an individual, a family, or a community to meet their full potential

Some considerations in answering how your field will address basic human needs globally might be

employee working conditions, pay, or production of products overseas. For example, a U.S. based company may decide to open a factory in a foreign country which can provide benefits in the form of employment and economic impact for that country while in return keeping production costs low for the company (i.e. interdependence).

Human Sciences professionals, we help others

engage in activities that optimize their wellness in various aspects of life.

Healthy families and supportive communities are needed for

individuals to develop their unique potential

Maslow designed the hierarchy of needs to show that

an individual must attain the lower level before moving onto the next level with the ultimate goal of reaching self-actualization. But, if a person has unmet needs in a certain level then they cannot move forward in achieving the best possible version of their self.

What is an abstract?

an introduction or purpose statement with a: -literature review -description of the research or methods with a study design -statistical analysis of data, results, and significance of research

As Human Sciences majors we have to consider how to provide

basic needs, like housing, to a growing population and the best way to use our natural resources to accomplish such.

What does The Body of Knowledge (BOK) do?

connects the specializations together in an integrative way to provide foundation for professional practice no matter what field of Human Sciences you are in.

wellness is defined in our field as

the optimal functioning in every dimension of life. it is also as a cross-cutting theme is an extension of the individual well-being with the difference being an achievement of optimal wellness through the components of individual well-being (physical, material, social, etc.).

What is research?

the systematic investigation into a study of materials and resources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions

In Family and Consumer Sciences, we consider

the whole individual, the whole family and the whole community.

Within Family and Consumer Sciences, in order to meet the needs of our clients and provide resources we must communicate. Communication can be conducted in various forms:

-Face-to-face -Email -Texting -Marketing -Letters etc.

While attending Vassar College, What did she study? A - astronomy and chemistry B - chemistry and communications C - communications and astronomy D - home etc and chemistry

Answer a 'yes' or 'no' if the scenario is a breach of academic integrity? You and a friend spilt the assigned problems and you each work on half. You both swap the completed answers and submit all the problems as your own work.

Yes

Do research articles contain an abstract (summary)?

Yes

Community vitality is achieved when

a community has the capacity to plan, make decisions, and act together to create positive social, economic and environmental outcomes.

Self-actualization

a person's motivation to reach his or her full potential. As shown in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, a person's basic needs must be met before self-actualization can be achieved.

What is peer review?

a process editors use to validate the scholarship (including quality, relevance to field, methodology and research design) of the articles they publish by having other scholars in the related fields look over them (blind review process: author's name does not appear on work when being evaluated)

Life course development

looks at the individual or family over time; there are three different kinds of time that influence human behavior: -individual time: related to a person's age which is a good predictor of their interests, privileges, and roles that they play within society.(Meaning, you must be a certain age to drive a car, to vote, to consume alcohol, to gamble...all activities that require a certain level of maturity to engage in.) -generational time: the cohort of people that you share a similar period of time with probably have similar interest that have been shaped by the same social economic conditions in which you were raised. (i.e. the millennial (Generation Y) cohort grew up during the digital age and are more likely than their grandparents to be comfortable in adapting to new technologies.) -historical time: refers to historical events that have an impact on those that experience them. (i.e. 9/11 affected many American's feelings about security) - This life course model also includes major concepts of stages, tasks, and transitions -stage: a period in a person''s life of family's life(i.e. teenage years, or empty nest stage) -task: can be considered as a newlywed couple needing to develop positive relationships with in-laws (i.e. infant needing to develop trust in a caregiver) transition: a period that tends to be stressful as we move from one stage to the next.

Human ecosystems

serves as the framework for the BOK in identifying how families interact their environments -this first integrative element holds the assumption that families and the environment in which they live are interdependent -the interdependence between the family and the environment creates cooperation and integration within the ecosystem. -It is assumed that interactions between families and environments are guided by two sets of rules: 1) Physical and biological laws of nature 2) Human-derived rules (social norms) -Environments do not determine human behavior, rather pose limitations and constraints (as well as possibilities and opportunities) for families -As a Human Sciences professional, you will be required to use an ecosystems perspective (i.e. interior designers create human built environments to meet the needs of a certain clientele, a teacher will have to analyze a child's environment when considering their development, A nutritionist might research a nutrient's (from a natural environment) affect on a particular disease)

Within the early years of Family and Consumer Sciences, technology was introduced in the homes as a way

to reduce labor (vacuums, washers etc.).

Abraham Harold Maslow

was a psychologist who studied positive human qualities and the lives of exemplary people. In 1954 he created the Hierarchy of Human Needs and expressed his theories in his book, "Motivation and Personality."
