What is the unique feature of the #12 knife blade?
The #12 knife blade is often used in oropharyngeal surgery. The special feature of the #12 blade is that it is curved with the cutting surface on the inner aspect of the curve. Because of its extended length and slim handle, the #7 knife handle is used as well.
What histological stain may be used for esophageal or laryngeal biopsies?
A histological stain may be used to differentiate abnormal cells. This is especially useful in the esophagus and larynx. An example of one of these stains is toluidine blue.
When positioning the patient for oral cases, what additional positioning devices will be needed?

An esophageal diverticulum is referred to as a Zenker's diverticulum. The patient usually complains of dysphagia or difficulty swallowing.

Oral packing is an important post-operative thing after throat surgery. While recovering from anesthesia, the patient's gag reflex may not be present. If vomiting or bleeding in the throat occur, liquids may enter the airways and cause contamination or aspiration, more importantly. Oral packing also prevents blood from entering the stomach, where it may go undetected or cause false findings. Be ready and prepared for symptoms like dysphagia, postoperative sore throat and difficulty breathing.
