IPC Unit 3 Lesson 5
an atom that gains or loses electrons
ion
Element Be: - What is it's name? - What is its atomic number? - What is its atomic mass? - How many protons does it have? - How many electrons does a neutral Be atom have? - How many neutrons does it have?
- Beryllium - 4 - 9 - 4 - 4 - 5
Element Cs: - What is it's name? - What is its atomic number? - What is its atomic mass? - How many protons does it have? - How many electrons does a neutral Cs atom have? - How many neutrons does it have?
- Cesium - 55 - 133 - 55 - 55 - 78
Element Au: - What is it's name? - What is its atomic number? - What is its atomic mass? - How many protons does it have? - How many electrons does a neutral Au atom have? - How many neutrons does it have?
- Gold - 79 - 197 - 79 - 79 - 118
What is the difference between a neutral element and an ion?
An ion is an element that has gained or lost electrons, so it is no longer neutral.
What is the difference between an element and an isotope?
An isotope is an element with a different number of neutrons.
What makes an isotope of an element?
Different forms of an element have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
Matthew is looking at two different atoms. One has 8 protons and 10 neutrons. The other substance has 8 protons and 12 neutrons. Are these the same element? Why or why not?
Yes. They are the same element because they have the same number of protons.
Iodine can form ions with a -1 charge. Is it a cation or an anion?
anion
a type of ion that carries a negative charge
anion
the combined number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
atomic mass
the number of protons in the atom of an element
atomic number
Barium can form ions with a +2 charge. Is it a cation or an anion?
cation
a type of ion that carries a positive charge
cation
What makes one element different from another element?
the number of protons
