what does community mean to you besides volunteering?

besides volunteering, i would say that community to me means establishing a family and connection with those around you and building a positive atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable and included

describe/introduce yourself:

hi my name is kaylin tang! i'm currently a junior and as of this year, a first year member of leo club. some of the things that i'm a part of are yearbook, ASB, key club, leo club, and school site council. for the upcoming school year i will be taking yearbook, expository, ap comp sci, intermediate business and finance, food science, and i also plan on dual in enrolling in a couple of courses, but i'm not entirely sure what they will be yet. and some of the other leadership positions i plan on going out for as of this moment are asb secretary and leo secretary.

what would you do if you had a conflicting issue that wouldn't allow you to complete your job to the fullest as secretary?

i think before deciding to try out for secretary, i knew that this job would be pretty rigorous and obviously i'll always do my best and put my best efforts forward to not only complete my job, but also do it effectively, but i also know that some things are inevitable and sometimes emergencies happen but in that case, i would first try to do as much of the work as i can, but if i still need help, i would probably have to ask for help from other officers but i would definitely try to make that super minimal because i know that everyone else also has their own jobs and priorities

what does leo mean to you?

i think for me, leo is like a really positive and inclusive community with really nice people who are all willing to help out and follow the motto of see more, do more in order to help out their community and those in need around them, it's also opportunities, leadership and the passion from members to help and better the world around them

why did you want to try out for secretary?

i think i chose to try out for secretary because i would say that i'm a very organized person and detail organized and after taking these details into consideration, i thought that these strengths would be most effective in the position of secretary

if you were to compare yourself to a boba order, what would it be?

i think i would say jasmine milk tea with lychee jelly and boba. um specifically two toppings because i feel like it makes the drink fun and kind of gives off a vibe of excitement/enthusiasm which i think describes me when i get involved in things that i love and jasmine milk tea because it's classic and kind of plain at times but i would say that's another way to describe myself, so i guess just plain and normal but also enthusiastic and excited.

what would you do if a problem occurred in leo club?

i think if a problem occurred in leo club, the best way to fix it would be through communication and talking things out to work things out in order to prevent further issues from escalating

what is your biggest accomplishment so far?

i think my biggest accomplishment is probably all of the things that i've done so far in my short period of time at arroyo i mean being a new student and especially during the times of distance learning, things felt really isolated, but even so, i pushed myself and ended up doing a lot of things such as becoming a yearbook editor, school site council co chair, being environmental club member of the month, and winning the big paw award for leo club

what is your biggest weakness and how can you fix it?

i think my biggest weakness would be getting wrapped up in my own thoughts and stressing myself out, but as time has gone on and i've experienced more and more things with some of them being high stress like yearbook deadlines, i've been able to limit this weakness and though it is one of my greatest weaknesses, it's gotten to be rather minor and i can guarantee that i won't allow it to get in the way of doing a good job as secretary if i'm lucky enough to be elected into the position

what is a time you failed and what did you do?

i think one time i failed at something i had planned out was during yearbook, i was a photographer and we had planned out this event where we had asked some students to be at a location at a certain time so we could shoot their photos for the yearbook, but last minute, they cancelled on us because they were no longer able to meet us at the place we had planned, but the deadline was also coming up and they told us they were no longer able to meet us and for that day and the day after everything was just falling apart so instead, we had to figure something out and in the end just compromised with a different setting and met the students at their house and did everything possible in order to get the job done even if it didn't go the way as originally planned

what would you do to bring in more members?

i think one way we could try and fix this would definitely be putting out promo vids or flyers, but besides that relating back to my own experience, i was a new student to arroyo this year and initially i didn't want to join leo because it felt really intimidating and i didn't necessarily understand what the club entailed but when i was reached out to personally by katrina, it made me feel more comfortable and excited to join, so essentially, i think a really effective way for us to kind of fix this issue would be getting the officer board to do their best to personally reach out to a lot of students

what do you think is the most important trait for a good leader to have?

i think some good traits for a leader to have are definitely communication in order to avoid confusion, enthusiasm/a drive to get things done so that things run smoothly, and also passion because i feel like anyone can be a leader but if there's no real passion or care for what someone is doing, it kinda shows and makes things less enjoyable for not only the person, but also those around them

what are your greatest strengths and how can you contribute them to leo club

i think some of my greatest strengths are definitely communication skills and my drive to get things done/organization. over the past few years of high school with all the things that i've been involved in, it's really given me a chance to develop various skills but with communication being a really big one and i think that'll really contribute to leo club when communicating with other board members, but also when trying to establish a connection with club members, and reaching out to other students to get involved with the club. also, as for my drive to get things done and organization, i think that will really help with leo because i know that the position of secretary has a lot of responsibilities but with these skills, i think it'll definitely help me out with completing my job not only effectively, but also quickly in order to help out others who might need the information on the board

what leadership characteristic traits do you want to bring into leo club?

i think some of the traits that i want to bring into leo are definitely enthusiasm, by doing my best to be really spirited and excited about everything, a positive atmosphere by trying to make everyone feel included and reaching out to members personally, and visions so like possible new event ideas or like collabs with leo clubs from other schools if it's possible

what things do you think we could do differently in order to help next year/what new event ideas do you have

i think something we could try and implement, is possibly doing collab events with other leo clubs at other schools and i also think by doing this, we could make things more interactive with leo overall and it could possibly make people more interested in attending events because they would be able to meet new people but besides that i think something we could possibly try and implement so that more people are able to attain their senior regalia is possibly having both online and in person volunteering events available for access, but for the online events, maybe just host it like once every other month and cap the hours attainable to about 4 so that students who can't make it to certain events are still able to volunteer, but i think this also encourages more participation and deters from discouragement for those who might be unable to attend various events and again because it would be a rarer event occurring about 2 times in a semester it would still mean that members would have to participate in, in person events, but it also allows for less pressure when someone can't make it to a lot of events and could allows more students to get their senior regalia

how have you implemented leo's motto of see more do more into your life?

i think that one way i've implemented leo's motto of see more do more into my life is i guess at my family's donut shop, it's near the la area so there tend to be a lot of homeless people, but whenever i can, i try to help them out by trying to give them free food or whatever i can in order to help them out even if it's really minimal

what does volunteering mean to you?

i think volunteering to me obviously means giving back to my community, but also doing the most that i can to help those around me

what are some examples of leadership that you have shown throughout your time as a student?

i would say that an example of leadership that i've shown during my time as a student was during my sophomore year in yearbook, so basically how things worked were that we were put in something called pods where there was a designated photographer, writer, and designer, and often times, we would have a lot of issues with scheduling for photos because it was hard to match times with the students and yearbook staff and so it lead to a lot of conflicts especially when deadlines were coming up but typically when this happened, i would always step up whenever possible and take on the job even if it wasn't initially my responsibility because it's important to be collaborative and have good teamwork in order for things to go well

if you had emails from leo club members asking about events, admin, or college admissions officers which one would you respond to first?

in this situation there's definitely going to be a lot of pressure to respond, but i would undoubtedly respond to the leo members first bc by trying out for secretary i'm taking on the responsibility of being a good leader and putting leo club first so i would have to go with responding to the leo member's questions first and after replying to other emails asap

why do you want the position of secretary?

initially, before making the decision to join leo club, i was really nervous about all of it because i felt like it was really intimidating, but i ended up really really loving it this year and because of that i wanted to run for a board position in order to get even more involved and give back more to not only the club but also the community and because i feel that some of my greatest strengths are being a good communicator, organized, driven, i thought that it would be most beneficial towards the position of secretary

how often do you have to find/coordinate events?

AT LEAST once every 2 months

from your family and friends, who do you view as a leader and why?

out of my family and friends, i think that i would view one of my friends, his name is nathan as a leader because i remember watching him last year when he was vice president for key club at temple city and he always rose up to the occasion and took on all issues very efficiently, was very organized, super enthusiastic, and he always did his best to reach out and connect with not only his board but also his club members.

outside of your family and friends, who do you look up to as a leader and why?

outside of my friends and family, someone that i view as a good leader is ms swanson because shes not only a good teacher, but also takes the extra time out of her busy work life to be the yearbook advisor and i think she also holds all of the traits that a good leader entails such as being understanding, empathetic, a good communicator, and enthusiastic

with all of the activities you are in, how do you plan to manage your time?

over the past three years in high school i've been involved in a number of things whether it was sports or clubs, and i've always been able to map everything out and organize my time using an agenda or a planner.

what is the leo motto?

see more, do more

what are the 3 things that leo club wants to bring to the members/what does leo stand for?

the 3 things that leo club wants to bring to their students are leadership experience and opportunities

things tend to be awkward towards the beginning of the year with the board, how do you think this issue can be resolved?

though i hope things won't be awkward, if they are, i think i would probably try and suggest various activities for board bonding in order to break the ice whether it's a movie or a game that we could watch/play online

what can you do to improve leo club and how would you fix the issue?

well from what i've heard, i heard that leo lost a lot of members this past year and i think something to fix is probably trying to get those members back. i think one way we could try and fix this would definitely be putting out promo vids or flyers, but besides that relating back to my own experience, i was a new student to arroyo this year and initially i didn't want to join leo because it felt really intimidating and i didn't necessarily understand what the club entailed but when i was reached out to personally by katrina, it made me feel more comfortable and excited to join, so essentially, i think a really effective way for us to kind of fix this issue would be getting the officer board to do their best to personally reach out to a lot of students

if the officers are having trouble communicating what would you do?

well i hope that this wouldn't happen but i think one possible solution would be trying to have board bonding events or just having random icebreakers to start every meeting

what were some of your past leadership positions and what skills have they helped you develop?

well in the past during freshman and sophomore year i was in a club called ray united fc where i held the club positions of fundraising coordinator and historian and my jobs were basically to help organize fundraisers so for example, i was in charge of figuring out what we were going to sell in something called fun food friday so i had to talk to restaurant owners in order to help organize fundraisers so i think that really helped with my communication skills and with my position as a historian, i was in charge of documenting our club events through pictures and because i had to go around and talk to a lot of students while doing that, it really helped me loosen up and learn more about developing a connection with members which was basically done through having one on one conversations with them

if you get the other leadership positions that you're going for, what do you think you'll gain from them?

well the other leadership position that i was thinking about going for is asb secretary and because i'm also trying out for leo club secretary, i think that something i could gain from that is possibly more efficient ways to do my job

what's a song that describes you?

well, i don't know if this is kind of weird but i think probably the christmas song sleigh ride because it's really upbeat and energetic and i think that's how i would describe myself as a person
