"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Formally abolishing slavery in the United States, the 13th Amendment was passed by the Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified by the states on December 6, 1865.
13th Amendment
the 16th President of the United States. He is considered one of the greatest figures in the history of the United States. He was an attorney in Springfield, Illinois, before running for the Presidency. During his Presidency he kept his country together during the Civil War and later signed the Emancipation Proclamation which freed African-Americans from slavery. He was elected to a second term as president even though his war policies were criticised. He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, an actor who was a Confederate sympathizer in 1865, after which Abe was seen as a martyr and an icon among many people in the United States. His iconic status has been represented in many media protrayals, both serious and comic.

In November 1863, President Abraham Lincoln was invited to deliver remarks, , at the official dedication ceremony for the National Cemetery of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, on the site of one of the bloodiest and most decisive battles of the Civil War. Though he was not the featured orator that day, Lincoln's 273-word address would be remembered as one of the most important speeches in American history. In it, he invoked the principles of human equality contained in the Declaration of Independence and connected the sacrifices of the Civil War with the desire for "a new birth of freedom," as well as the all-important preservation of the Union created in 1776 and its ideal of self-government.
