Manor- included the homes of the nobles (which were sometimes a castle), serfs, and clergy. Objective- self-sufficiency (make enough goods to support the whole society) What types of goods? Tools, weapons, clothes, and food.
What was life like for Serfs in the Middle Ages?
Most peasants that lived on the estates were serfs. Serfs were not slaves, but they were bound to the land. They could not leave the estate without the lord's permission. Responsibilities - Serfs: farmed the lord's land and other necessary labor. In return for service, the lord provided them with the use of several acres of land to farm.
