Compound

A COMPOUND is a substance with 2 or more different types of atoms.

Mechanical Mixture

A mechanical mixture is when you simply mix different materials without any interaction.

Pure substance

A pure substance cannot be separated into any other kinds of matter by any physical or chemical process. It is also made up of the same particles. An element is an example of a pure substance because it cannot be broken down into simpler substance. Examples of pure substances would be: H2O (water), neon (an element), and NaCl (table salt).

Solution

A solution is made whenever two substances mix completely. A solution is when one substance dissolves in another. In this case, the sugar (called solute) dissolved in the water (the solvent).

Element

An ELEMENT contains only 1 type of atom.

What is the Brownian Motion?

Brownian motion is the irregular motion of small particles suspended in a liquid or a gas, caused by bombardment of the particles by molecules of the medium.

Suspension

If you shine a path of light through a liquid and the light beam can be seen, the liquid is a suspension. In a suspension, the larger particles reflect the light and so we see the beam.

Matter

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space (has volume) Atoms are the simplest form of matter.

Homogeneous mixture

Salt crystals - but that are dissolved in water.

What is KMT?

The Kinetic Molecular Theory is a concept that basically states that atoms and molecules possess an energy of motion (kinetic energy) that we perceive as temperature.

Heterogeneous mixture

We can see all the parts of the mixture, it is not uniform. For example Salad dressing, because it's parts do not combine completely. You can still see clumps of herbs and oil.

Mixture

When two or more compounds or elements are blended together without combining chemically it becomes a mixture.

What is the difference between a compound and a mixture?

With a compound a chemical change takes place, however with a mixture a physical change takes place.
