the sex pistols
Mclaren managed band. Johnny Rotten and Glen Matlock. Signed to EMI (same label as Beatles), then A&M, then Virgin records. First single-"Anarchy in the UK". 1st album- Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols. Matlock fired for liking the Beatles and replace by Sid Vicious. "God Save the Queen" (made #2 never #1).
Devo
Most iconic of all New wave bands. Brothers Bob and Mark Mothersbaugh and Bob and Gerald Casales. Futuristic beings from '50's ski-fi movie image. David Bowie and Iggy pop helped them get signed. "(I Can't get no) Satisfaction". Album- Freedom of Choice. "Whip It"- heavily played on early MTV.
talking heads
New wave. Debuted at CBGB's. Debut album- Talking Heads '77. "Psycho Killer" (signature song). David Byrne was lead singer. "Once in a Lifetime".
sid vicious
Played bass badly for the sex pistols. Sex poisons break up and he releases "My Way". Solo performer in NYC and dates Nancy Spungen (lower moreland). She was found dead in Sid's hotel room stabbed to death. Sid died from heroin overdose given by his mother.
REM
Prototype for college rock. Album- Maurmer. "Radio Free Europe". Out Of Time- "Losing My Religion". Warner Brothers record label.
Siouxsie and the banshees
Siousie Sioux. Pioneers of Goth; Punk. Sid vicious was the original drummer. Debut single- "Hong Kong Garden". Biggest hit- "Dear Prudence": Beatles cover.

The most commercially successful successful band to come out of CBGB's. Debbie Harry- lead singer/songwriter, former playboy bunny.
Billie Jean
This video broke the color barrier on MTV. Companies now believed a video was crucial to an artist's success. Introduces the moon walk at Motown performance.
CBGB (country blue grass blues)
becomes center of NY punk scene. OMFUG (other music for upstanding gormandizers). Later becomes Varvatos clothing store.

began to challenge Rock radio as a means for establishing hit records. Goes on air August 1st, 12AM.
