Compare and contrast the views of the modernists and the fundamentalists. How did Darwinism and the Scopes trial symbolize the conflict between the two? How were the cultural tensions of the 1920s reflected in party politics?
Modernists put more emphasis on modern science and religion while the fundamentalists were very religious and believed in literal interpretation of the Bible. The scopes trial, John Scope was accused of breaking the law and teaching about evolution which the fundamentalists felt mocked religion. This trial shows how suspicion divided Americans on religion. The fundamentalists also did not approve of Darwinism and felt that it was not true and went against the Bible. The political parties at the time lost control in all of the social and cultural aspects of America during this time. The political parties started to return to the old ways of doing things and didn't have too many foreign affairs and minimal government involvement in the nation's political economy. Also the progressive movement started to decline.
