Indian ocean

Covers about 14% of the earths surface. Enclosed on 3 sides by the landmasses of Africa, Asia, and Australia. Average depth is about 12,800 feet, deepest point in this ocean region occurs in the java trench.

Pacific ocean

Is the largest ocean covering 30% of the earth's surface. The average depth is 14,100 feet. The deepest point is the Mariana trench at 35,840 feet. About 25,000 islands in the pacific ocean.

Southern Hemisphere Climate

More moderate because more heat energy is stored in the oceans.

Ocean Facts

Oceans cover approximately 70.8%. The average depth cover approximately 70.8%. The average depth is 2.4 miles. Maximum depths can exceed 6.2 miles in a number of areas known as ocean trenches. The oceans contain 97% of our planet's available water. the other 3% is found in atmosphere, on earth's surface.

Atlantic ocean

Relatively narrow body of water covering about 21% of the earth's surface. The average depth is 10,800 feet. The deepest point is the Puerto Rico trench at 28,232 feet. The mid Atlantic ridge runs down the center of this ocean region separates the Atlantic ocean into two large basins.

Arctic ocean

Smallest ocean covering 3% of the earth's total surface. Nearly land lock and located north of the arctic circle. The average depth is 3450 feet, covered by a persistent ice pack. During the winter months, sea ice covers much of the arctic oceans surface. Higher temperatures in the summer months cause the ice pack to shrink by about 50%

The southern ocean

Surrounds Antarctica, and occupies 4% of the earth's surface. Average depth is 13,100 to 16,100 feet. Deepest point is the South Sandwich Trench at 23,373 feet.

Southern Hemisphere Ratio

The ratio of land to ocean is 1 to 4.

Northern Hemisphere Ratio

The ratio of land to ocean is about 1 to 1.5
