Emotions are complex, relatively brief responses aimed at a particular target, such as a person (in this case, the dean), information (in this case, that you will not be student leader), experience, event or nonevent. They also change psychological and/or physiological states. Emotions can be thought of in terms of goals. Negative emotions are triggered by frustration and failure when pursuing one's goals, and are said to be goal incongruent. You might feel disappointed and/or angry (felt emotion). You might keep your feelings to yourself or you might begin to cry. Both reactions are instances of displayed emotions. It's just that in the first case you are choosing not to show emotion, which means your display is "no emotion." Your display can affect the outcomes, in this case the dean's reactions. Self-esteem is your general belief about your own self-worth. Self-efficacy beliefs are deep convictions supported by experience versus being simply confident (high self-esteem).
