CSMA/CD is the media acces method used by Ethernet which is a set of rules that govern how and when a device an transmit on an Ethernet network. To avoid these collisions, CSMA/CD says that a device must first listen to see whether it can detect any other signal on the medium. If no other signal is detected, then the device can transmit. If another device transmits at the same time and a collision occurs, then both transmitting stations must wait for a random period before they can try to transmit again.

Because a switch can control where it sends a frame, devices that are connected to a switch can communicate at the same time, allowing each device to access the full network bandwidth. With a hub, only one device can transmit at a time so the bandwidth is shared among all connected devices. Also, because a switch controls the flow of frames, there is little chance of collision. In a hub, collisions might occur frequently when under heavy use.
