A basic unit of structure in compact bone

Osteocytes

A bone cell, formed when an osteoblast becomes embedded in the matrix it has secreated

Lacunae

A small space containing an osteocyte in bone, or chondrocyte in cartilage

Periosteum

A specialized connective tissue covering all bones

Volkmann's canal

Any of the small channels in bone that that transmit blood vessels from the periosteum into the bone, lie perpendicular to haversian canal

Haverisian (central) canal

Contains nerves, lymphatic, and blood vessels

Major component in connective tissue

Lamellae

Plates of collagen fiber

Canaliculi

Small channels connecting the lacunae

Spongy bone

Trebeculae, lattice like structures
