Direct Object

A direct object is a noun that receives the aciton of a verb. A direct object usually comes after the verb. A direct object answers the question, "What?" or "Whom?"

Helping/Main Verb

A helping/main verb helps the main verb of the sentence. The helping verb usually goes right before the main verb. was doing, am going, have finished, is frightened, were laughing, had gone

Linking Verb

A linking verb connects the subject of the sentence with the predicate. It explains what the subject of the sentence is. be, am, is, are, was, were, being, been

Noun

A noun is a person, place, thing or idea. boy, girl, Bob, Sally (person) school, park, San Diego (place) pencil, book, basketball (thing) love, joy, friendship (idea)

Preposition

A preposition links nouns, pronouns and phrases to other words in a sentence. The book is on the table. The book is beneath the table. The book is leaning against the table. On, beneath, against are prepositions.

What part of speech is the word cut? The boy cut the grass with the lawnmower.

Action Verb - It tells what the boy did.

What part of speech is the word frozen? The frozen ice reached across the lake.

Adjective - It describes the ice.

What part of speech is the word green? The green lawn stretched out in front of the house.

Advective - green describes the house.

What part of speech is the word slowly? The old man slowly climbed the stairs.

Adverb - It describes how the man climbed the stairs.

What part of speech is the word harshly? He spoke harshly to the barking dog.

Adverb - harshly describes how he spoke to the dog.

What part of speech is the word skillfully? The hockey player skillfully skated down the ice.

Adverb - skillfully describes the verb (skated). It tells how the hockey player skated.

Action Verb

An action verb shows action. It explains what the subject of the sentence does. eat, ate, throw, threw, run, ran, write, wrote

Adjective

An adjective describes a noun or pronoun. large, tired, sleepy, excited, fast, bored, funny, new, hungry, electronic, small, blue, low, warm

Adverb

An adverb describes a verb or adjective. Many adverbs end in -ly. quickly, slowly, quietly, finally, safely, impatiently, recently, carefully

What part of speech is the word was? The restaurant was crowded.

Linking Verb - was connects the subject (the restaurant) with the predicate (crowded). It is a linking verb because it does not show action.

Prepositional Phrase

A prepositional phrase is group of words that tells where. on the table, to the park, near the fence, under the bed.

Pronoun

A pronoun takes the place of a noun. I, it, you, we, he, she, we, they, him, her, them

What part of speech is the word assignments? My teacher returned the assigments to the students.

Direct Object - Assigments is a noun that receives the action of the verb, so it is a direct object. What did the teacher return? Assignments

What part of speech is Allison? Susan spoke to Allison.

Direct Object - To whom did Susan speak? To Allison.

What part of speech is the word cookie? My friend gave me a cookie?

Direct Object - What did my friend give me? A cookie.

What part of speech is the word book? The author wrote the book.

Direct Object - What did the author write? The book.

What part of speech are the words was eating? I was eating a sandwich when the phone rang.

Helping/Main Verb - was is the helping verb, and eating is the main verb.
