If the PCV valve is stuck in the wide open position how will the motor run?

Excessive airflow through the valve causes a rough idle or stalling. Also can cause a lean air-fuel mixture

Why are "blow-by" gases bad for the inside of a motor?

When post combustion gases condense inside the crankcase, it reacts with the oil to form sludge. The sludge can damage pistons, piston rings, valves, bearings and other working parts.

Can a bad PCV valve cause an oil leak?

Yes, the gas enters the crankcase by pressure formed during combustion, so this pressurizes the crankcase. The pressure pushes out at oil pan gasket and crankshaft seals. If the pressure has no where to go it eventually leaks through the gasket or seals.

What are the two main purposes of the PCV?

1. Prevents the emission of blow-by gases from the engine crankcase to the atmosphere. 2. Scavenges the crankcase of vapors that could dilute the oil and cause it to deteriorate or that could build undesirable pressure in the crankcase.

A restricted PCV valve or hose will cause?

Can result in accumulation of moisture and sludge in the engine and engine oil.

If a PCV valve is stuck closed what are the possible outcomes?

It will increase emission and fuel consumption. Will cause a rich air-fuel mixture.

What is "blow-by"?

Post combustion gas that leaks into the crankcase

How does the PCV get rid of combustion gas inside the crankcase?

The PCV uses engine vacuum to draw fresh air through the crankcase.
