High intensity exercise is only short term because of the lack of oxygen to your muscles. This causes muscle fibers to produce lactic acid to produce ATP, but it causes a burning sensation that is very painful. The removal of lactic acid is limited by the rate of processing by the liver. Lactic acid can only be maintained temporarily. Oxygen is required in a short of amount of time otherwise cell death will occur.
