What percentage of women experiences a worsening of migraine when pregnant? Migraine is a chronic functional disorder accompanied by periodic attacks of severe headache. It's still not known what exactly causes migraine, its etiology is debatable, certain experts believe that migraine is inherited, some medics think that it's a neurological disorder, whereas others believe it's a vascular disease. Unfortunately, modern drugs can only relieve its symptoms, but cannot cure this disease. One can find cheap prescription drugs to relieve migraine attacks in online pharmacies. According to statistics, women suffer from migraine two times more often than men, especially during periods of hormonal changes. Quite often the first signs of migraine can appear in girls at the age of 10-13 years, that is during puberty, when the body experiences serious changes. Many women suffering from migraine attacks wonder if pregnancy can affect their condition. Luckily, for most women pregnancy brings positive changes. Researches show that in 60-70% of cases migraine attacks stop or at least become less frequent due to the hormonal changes happening in the body of a pregnant woman, about 25% of women notice no changes in their condition, and about 4-8% may experience worsening of migraines. If a woman suffers from migraine attacks with aura, then there is a risk that during pregnancy such attacks will become worse, but in those who don't have aura pregnancy can lead to an improvement of migraine symptoms. Sometimes pregnancy can promote the development of this disease in those who have never experienced migraines before. A pregnant woman should always tell her doctor about any headaches she experiences, especially if they are intense, two-sided, throbbing and if they aggravate during physical activity as it might be a symptom of eclampsia, a very dangerous complication of pregnancy. 4-8% The passage states that 4-8% of women experience a worsening of migraine when pregnant. The passage states that 25% of women do not notice a change of migraine when pregnant and that 60-70% of women stop having or have fewer migraine symptoms when pregnant. The passage states that 10-13 is the age that girls first notice signs of migraine.

Which of the following age groups are most likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's? Alzheimer's is a disease that causes issues with one's memory, behavior, and thinking. The onset of Alzheimer's generally develops at a slow pace and gradually gets worse over time.Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia as it accounts for 50 to 80 percent of all memory loss cases. Alzheimer's most commonly affect individuals who are over the age of 65; however, five percent of the disease cases appear in individuals who are between 40 and 50 years old. This progressive disease worsens over several years. Individuals who are diagnosed with Alzheimer's generally notice mild memory loss at first. As the disease progresses, they may lose their ability to carry on a conversation or respond to things happening around them.In the U.S., Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death, and those with the disease generally only live an average of eight years after being diagnosed. Currently there is not a cure for Alzheimer's; however, there are treatments available that can slow the progression of the disease and improve one's quality of life. 45-50 40-45 70-75 50-55

70-75 The second paragraph informs the reader that Alzheimer's disease most commonly affects those who are 65 or older. Thus, the age group that would most likely be diagnosed with Alzheimer's is 70-75.

According to the passage, how many calories are in two cups of cubed cantaloupe? There has been a boom in farmers' markets in recent years. The USDA produces a farmers' market directory that lists more than 8,000 markets, and an increase of 76 percent since 2008! If you're a market enthusiast, you know the local market delivers a bounty of good things to eat; the catch is to get to the market early and benefit from the best selection. Seasonal fruits, melons, berries and other produce are nutrient dense. In other words these are foods that are high in nutrients, yet low in calories. Though you'll find several items to choose from at your local market, today's article will focus on my favorites-melons. Watermelon This melon is one of the season's most popular fruits. It is high in vitamins A, B6, and C. Vitamin A is important in eye health, and helps boost the immune system. Vitamin B6 helps in the production of antibodies to fight disease, maintain healthy nerves and break down protein in the body. Vitamin C also aids the immune system in helping to fight infection and viruses. This melon is also high in lycopene, which is the pigment that gives the melon and other produce the red color. Lycopene is an antioxidant which studies show helps prevent hardening of the arteries and may be beneficial in preventing and treating prostate cancer. A 2-cup serving of watermelon also contains potassium, which helps the body maintain water balance, and aids weekend warriors in replenishing fluids and avoiding muscle cramps. Bonus-2 cups contain just 80 calories! In choosing the perfect watermelon, take a good look at it. The melon should be symmetrical without any dents, bruises or cuts. It should be heavy for its size and have a creamy yellow spot on it where it rested on the ground and ripened. Cantaloupe The surface is not as smooth as some of the other melons; it is slightly rough with a beige webbed skin. Cantaloupe is a good source of vitamins A, C and the B vitamins. It's also a good source of potassium and fiber, high in water content, low in fat, sodium and calories. Two cups of cubed cantaloupe contain approximately 110 calories. In selecting a melon, look for one that feels heavier and fuller for its size, has a fragrant aroma and is slightly soft, giving in to gentle pressure when you press your finger against the stem end. The rind should be cream, yellow or golden colored when the cantaloupe is ripe. Honeydew Melon Now we've all heard about "honey do" but in this case it is about something good to eat and not a task that needs attention. These melons are most flavorful when vine-ripened. They are good sources of vitamins and minerals including vitamins A, C, B, E and K. Minerals found in the melons are iron, calcium, zinc, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. This melon is low in sodium and fat free--two cups of honeydew melon contain approximately 120 calories. Choose a melon that is pale green with a smooth blemish free surface. The melon should be heavy for its size, firm to the touch, without any spongy areas or mold. As is the case with cantaloupe, the stem end of the melon should be slightly soft, giving in to gentle pressure with your fingertip. Smell the melon, the stem end should be fragrant and slightly sweet. Stewart, M. (2015, July 13). Farm to Table to Fitness. Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/health/farm-to-table-to-fitness.html 110 calories 80 calories 76 calories 120 calories

110 calories The reader can obtain the answer to this question directly from the passage. The fifth paragraph informs the reader that two cups of cubed cantaloupe contains 110 calories. Two cups of honeydew melon contains 120 calories. Two cups of watermelon contains 80 calories. Farmer's markets have increased by 76 percent since 2008.

Which of the following best describes Alzheimer's? Alzheimer's is a disease that causes issues with one's memory, behavior, and thinking. The onset of Alzheimer's generally develops at a slow pace and gradually gets worse over time.Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia as it accounts for 50 to 80 percent of all memory loss cases. A disease that impairs one's mobilization An untreatable disease A disease that causes memory loss An uncommon disease

A disease that causes memory loss The first three paragraphs of the passage inform the reader that Alzheimer's disease is a form of memory loss. The fourth paragraph informs the reader that there are treatments for the disease. The fourth paragraph also informs the reader that the disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S.; therefore, the disease is not uncommon. The first paragraph informs the reader that the disease causes issues with one's memory, behavior, and thinking, not one's ability to move.

Read the passage and then answer the following question: Which of the following options best defines glaucoma? Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the eye's optic nerve and can result in vision loss and blindness. However, with early detection and treatment, you can often protect your eyes against serious vision loss.In low-tension or normal-tension glaucoma, optic nerve damage and narrowed side vision occur in people with normal eye pressure. Lowering eye pressure at least 30 percent through medicines slows the disease in some people. Glaucoma may worsen in others despite low pressures. In angle-closure glaucoma, the fluid at the front of the eye cannot drain through the angle and leave the eye. The angle gets blocked by part of the iris. People with this type of glaucoma may have a sudden increase in eye pressure. Symptoms include severe pain and nausea as well as redness of the eye and blurred vision. In congenital glaucoma, children are born with a defect in the angle of the eye that slows the normal drainage of fluid. These children usually have obvious symptoms such as cloudy eyes, sensitivity to light, and excessive tearing. A cyst located on the eye An infection that causes swelling in the eye A laceration on the eye A group of diseases that damage the eye

A group of diseases that damage the eye The answer to this question can be found in the passage's first paragraph. The first sentence informs you that "glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the eye's optic nerve."

Read the passage, then answer the following question.Which of the following best outlines the structure of the passage? The increased usage of mobile devices has had some unintended and even dangerous consequences. Studies have shown that mobile communications are linked to a significant increase in distracted driving, resulting in injury and loss of life. In the year 2008, it was reported that driver distraction was the cause of 16 percent of all fatal crashes, leading to the deaths of 5,800 people, and 21 percent of the crashes resulted in an injury, causing 515,000 people to be wounded. The studies also show that nearly 50 percent of teens admit to texting while driving. Distracted driving endangers life and property, and the current levels of injury and loss are unacceptable. To stem this problem, safety organizations and other government agencies are working to inform and educate the public about the dangers of distracted driving and are seeking to identify and facilitate the development of innovative technologies that could reduce the incidence of distracted driving. Currently there is no national ban on texting or using a wireless phone while driving, but a number of states have passed laws banning texting or wireless phones or requiring hands-free use of wireless phones while driving. A theory is stated, then explained A question is asked, then answered An experiment is stated, then a conclusion is presented A statement is made, then supported

A statement is made, then supported The passage starts with the statement that increased usage of mobile technology is causing dangerous consequences. This statement is then supported by the facts from a recent study.

Read the passage below. Then answer the following question:Which of the following best outlines the structure of the passage? Last week I was driving the truck with my father in the passenger seat. We were taking a short two-hour road trip to pick up some material he needed for the farm. As we started out, the seat belt alarm sounded and I informed him that he would need to put on his seat belt, as I would not listen to the alarm the entire drive. Instead of actually putting on his seat belt, he buckled it behind him, so that he was sitting on top of the seat belt. Not wanting to be a "know-it- all," I did not say anything at first, but because it bothered me, I eventually started to tell him the following: one out of every five drivers will be involved in a traffic crash this year; motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among people age 44 and younger and the number one cause of head and spinal cord injuries; approximately 35,000 people die in motor vehicle crashes each year and about 50 percent (17,000) of these people would instead survive if they were wearing their safety belts; more than 90 percent of all motorists believe safety belts are a good idea, but less than 14 percent actually use them; for every one percent increase in safety belt use, 172 lives and close to $100 million in annual injury and death costs could be saved; and safety belts, when used properly, reduce the number of serious traffic injuries by 50 percent and fatalities by 60 to 70 percent.Even though my father was not too appreciative of the information, I thought it was important to pass along. Not only is wearing your seat belt a law in some states, but it also helps save the lives of many motorists each year. A theory is stated and is then explained A story is told and then facts are given A question is asked and then answered A statement is made and is then supported

A story is told and then facts are given The passage starts with a story told by the author. Then that story is followed by facts regarding motorist seat belt statistics.

Which of the following options is the best summary for the given passage? Alzheimer's is a disease that causes issues with one's memory, behavior, and thinking. Alzheimer's disease rarely affects those who are under the age of 65. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive form of dementia for which there is currently no cure. Alzheimer's is a common disease. Alzheimer's disease causes memory loss.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive form of dementia for which there is currently no cure. Summary statements can sometimes be tricky to identify; however, all you need to remember is that the summary needs to include information from the entire passage, not just one part of the passage. There is only one option that includes information from the entire passage; therefore, the other options can all be eliminated.

Read the passage and answer the following question: What is the main theme of this passage? Before living on your own, you need to hone some basic cooking skills. These skills include boiling water, cutting vegetables, and cooking basic meats. You also need to understand basic food safety, including when food needs to be refrigerated and how to tell when it is done cooking. Not many cooking skills are needed to survive. Basic cooking skills include boiling water and cooking meats. Food safety is very important for all cooks. Basic cooking skills are needed to live on one's own.

Basic cooking skills are needed to live on one's own. The main theme can often be found in the introduction or closing sentences. In this case, the first sentence of the passage contains the main theme. The other indicator is that all the other sentences support that one main theme.

When reading a passage or text, where can the reader locate the main idea of the passage? Beginning, middle, or end Beginning End Beginning or end

Beginning, middle, or end The main idea can be located at any point in the passage (beginning, middle, or end). It is important to read the entire paragraph to find the main idea. Introduction and summary passages often present the main idea to the reader as well. The main idea of a passage can be identified by answering the following two questions: 1) What is the passage about? and 2) What point is the author trying to make?

Consider the following categories for "Skin Diseases: Types of Lesions": Nodules, Pustules, Plaques, Ulcers, and _____.Which of the following can reasonably be inserted in the blank? Glands Epidermis Freckles Cysts

Cysts "Skin Diseases: Types of Lesions": Nodules, Pustules, Plaques, Ulcers, and Cysts. All categories should pertain directly to a type of skin lesion. "Cysts" is the only option that is considered a type of skin lesion and is therefore the optimal choice.

What is the meaning of the word "assertion" as it is used in the passage? When an ex-employee files for unemployment compensation in The State of Illinois, they will list their last or most recent employer on the forms. Only the last employer who has employed this person for over 30 "working" days is responsible for this person's unemployment compensation. If a company employs someone that works for only 29 "working" days, then they are not responsible. A working day is considered an eight-hour day. So if you have a part time employee, the total hours worked must add up to thirty days at eight hours apiece or a total of more than 240 hours. If they have not worked for you for that amount of time, then you are not the last chargeable employer. But you have to be able to prove this assertion. Time cards and payroll records are essential. An employer is automatically given a percentage rate for unemployment compensation upon the start up of their business. Once a former employee begins to collect unemployment, the department will re-adjust the tax rate based upon the unemployment payments. For example, if your company does not have any unemployment claims paid, then the percentage rate will very possibly go down and you will pay less in tax. But, if you have former employees being paid unemployment, then your percentage rate for this tax will probably increase. Think of unemployment as insurance. If you have substantial claims on an insurance policy, your rates will probably increase. Amundson, C. (2015, July 11). Unemployment Claims Affect Employer. Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/business/unemployment-claims-affect-employer.html Time Fraud Denial Claim

Claim This question can be answered by reading the context that surrounds the word. The word "assertion" is in the passage's second paragraph where it is talking about how an employer must be able to prove that they are not responsible for unemployment if the ex-employee did not work 240 hours. So, the employer must be able to prove this "claim." Denial, fraud, and time are not choices that correctly define the word "assertion" as it is used in the passage.

Did you finish your homework, David? You can't attend the party tonight until your homework has been completed. What can be logically inferred from this passage? The person speaking is David's mother David wants to go to the party David has finished his homework David wants to do his homework

David wants to go to the party Because the author is using the party to leverage David's behavior, we can conclude that David wants to go to the party. We can't conclude that the person speaking is his mother, only that it's someone with the authority to keep him from going out.

All except which of the following is a detail listed in the passage? When considering investments, people often are skeptical about mutual funds simply because they feel they are complicated to understand and manage. Keeping aside the jargon when simply put, mutual funds are a pool of funds put together by likeminded investors. Professional fund managers, who keep up with the markets and use their skills to invest in various financial instruments, manage the sum of the investors' contributions. These investors have a common financial goal and basis that they use and the funds that they manage are put into a scheme that matches their objectives. These funds are generally well diversified and invested in varied stocks, bonds, short-term money market instruments, and commodities. This way, mutual fund investments offer an attractive way of savings, which are managed quite passively, without asking for much attention, by experts who manage money every day. When choosing types of funds, an investor must first be clear on the sum of investment, term of investment, and risk taking ability. For this, it is necessary that you know about the different options available. So the basic three categories of mutual funds are: 1. Debt funds 2. Equity 3. Liquid/ Hybrid Funds Debt funds, as the name suggests, work on borrowings. It is on these funds that most companies, states, and even central governments work. They do so by offering several debt instruments like Tbills, debentures, etc. Debt funds give the assurance that the principal investment will be returned after the tenure and the interest will be calculated on a given rate of interest. It is these debt funds that bring stability to investment portfolio because the risk involved is lower to that of equity funds. Arora, H. (2015, June 24). Understanding Mutual Funds. Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/finance/understanding-mutual-funds.html Debentures are a type of debt fund Debt funds work on borrowings Most central governments utilize debt funds Debt funds are mutual funds with the highest risk

Debt funds are mutual funds with the highest risk The passage's last sentence informs the reader that debt funds have a lower risk than equity funds; therefore, the reader can determine that debt funds do not have the highest risk. The passage's last paragraph informs the reader that debt funds work on borrowings, that debentures are a type of debt fund, and that most central governments utilize debt funds.

Read the passage below. Then answer the following question: The passage answers all except which of the following questions? Last week I was driving the truck with my father in the passenger seat. Does wearing a seat belt help prevent injuries? Did the father put on his seat belt after hearing the information? How long was the author's road trip with his father?

Did the father put on his seat belt after hearing the information? Although the last paragraph states that the author's father did not appreciate the information, it does not state if he put on his seat belt or not.

The author's primary purpose in writing this article is to do which of the following? When an ex-employee files for unemployment compensation in The State of Illinois, they will list their last or most recent employer on the forms. Educate employers on how unemployment claims affect them The author's primary purpose in writing this article is to educate employers on how unemployment claims affect them. The author informs employers that the ex-employee will list them as the most recent employer, but they are only responsible if that employee worked more than 240 hours during his employment with them. The author then goes on to educate employers on how their tax rates will be re-adjusted if they are not the responsible party. This passage is written for an audience of employers, not ex-employees. The passage does not discuss the various tax rates associated with claims, only that tax rates can be re-adjusted based on unemployment claims. The passage's purpose is not to persuade the employers to terminate employees prior to the employee working 240 hours; it is only stated to inform employers that they are responsible for the claim if the employee works more than 240 hours.

All except which of the following factors cause low blood pressure? Blood pressure is the pressure inside the blood vessels, it promotes blood circulation all over the cardiovascular system and thus ensures metabolic processes in the body tissues. The numbers of blood pressure depend on individual characteristics, lifestyle and occupation of a person. Normally, it is about 120/80 mmHg. But these numbers change with age, they increase during physical activity or because of emotional stress. However, in spite of significant fluctuations in blood pressure, our body has complex mechanisms that regulate its level. These regulation mechanisms tend to return the pressure to its normal values once the action of provoking factors is over. In some cases, these mechanisms might break down and that leads to blood pressure changes. Persistently high blood pressure is called hypertension whereas persistently low - hypotension. There are quite a large number of factors that affect blood pressure, let's discuss some of them. Factors causing high blood pressure Excess weight. It's proven that obese and overweight people suffer from hypertension more often than those with a healthy weight because their cardiovascular system experiences high load. In order to provide the whole body with blood, its volume has to be increased, and blood output as well as vessels resistance are also increased - all that leads to an increase in blood pressure. Smoking. This unhealthy habit causes vessel constriction that keeps blood pressure at a level above the norm. Physicians note that smokers are at a higher risk of developing atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease, which are a 'perfect' company to hypertension. Alcohol. Alcohol consumption contributes to increase in the tone of sympathetic nervous system, thus, it increases the tension of the vessels and causes high blood pressure. Physicians recommend limiting the daily consumption of hard liquors up to 60 ml and wine - 200 ml. Salt. Researchers have analyzed the data obtained from various tests and found out that excessive salt consumption overstimulates human nervous system. Due to such stimulation, the body starts producing adrenaline, a hormone that, besides other effects, causes vasoconstriction resulting in increased blood pressure. Emotional and psychological stress. If the body is under a stress, it starts releasing adrenaline that causes rise in blood pressure. Chronic stress wears out the blood vessels and leads to chronic hypertension. Factors causing low blood pressure Chronic dehydration. Such dehydration, which may lead to arterial hypotension, is usually the result of a prolonged fasting or strict limitation of food intake as a part of some diets. Pregnancy might cause hypotension due to increase in the volume of circulating blood. Infectious diseases. This is due to the fact that the massive death of microbial cells releases their waste products into the bloodstream. It leads to decrease in blood pressure by reducing the tone of the vessels. Allergic reactions (eg. anaphylactic shock) result in production of the so-called biologically active substances (histamine, bradykinin, etc.) that also reduce vascular tone. Sedentary lifestyle. In this case, we are talking mainly about patients who remain recumbent for too long, which might lead to inadequate reflexes of the body's vegetative nervous system that will not let the body control blood pressure. A person needs more time to re-adjust his body to an upright position. Adapting to climate changes. Blood pressure drops when the body is adapting to sharp changes of climate and weather conditions. Mitchell, J. (2015, July 9). Factors That May Affect Your Blood Pressure. Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/health/factors-that-may-affect-your-blood-pressure.html Chronic dehydration Excess weight Allergic reactions Infectious diseases

Excess weight The reader can answer this question by directly reading the details listed in the passage. The passage states that excess weight is a cause of high blood pressure, not low blood pressure. Chronic dehydration, infectious diseases, and allergic reactions are all causes of low blood pressure.

Read the passage and answer the following question:Which of the following options is not a supporting detail in this passage? Excessive television viewing can be harmful to young children. When watching television, they do not have sufficient time to learn through independent play and interaction with other children. Additionally, children are often heavily influenced by the images on the screen which can lead to increased violence and foul language. Television can cause increased violence and foul language Children who watch excessive television do not have time for independent play Young children can be easily influenced by television images Excessive television can be harmful for young children

Excessive television can be harmful for young children The fact that excessive television viewing can be harmful for young children is the main idea of the passage (not a supporting detail). The main idea of a passage can be identified by answering the following two questions: 1) What is the passage about? and 2) What point is the author trying to make? Factors that affect blood pressure In order to identify the main idea of the passage, the reader must understand what the passage is about and what point the author is making about the passage's topic. The passage is about blood pressure and what factors cause high and low blood pressure. Therefore, the passage's main idea is about the factors that affect blood pressure. The passage does not inform the reader on how to reduce blood pressure or what medications are used to treat blood pressure disorders. The passage does provide little detail on how blood pressure affects the body, but the passage's main focus is on the factors that affect blood pressure.

Read the passage and answer the following question: Which of the following options correctly identifies the passage's main idea? Studies conducted on glaucoma Prevention of glaucoma Forms of glaucoma Treatments for glaucoma

Forms of glaucoma The trick to identifying the main idea of a passage is to determine what the passage is about and what point the author is trying to make about the passage's topic. This passage identifies the different forms of glaucoma. The passage does not identify glaucoma treatments, studies, or prevention methods.

Identify the main idea of the passage: The attitudes of Americans toward gambling are amazingly contradictory. You may find that horse racing is legal in your state, but that you cannot legally play poker for money on your front porch. One church condemns gambling, while another raises money by sponsoring Bingo games. Gambling laws are inconsistent from state to state, or even from town to town, and are very difficult to enforce. Churches do not have uniform ideas about gambling Americans have negative attitudes toward gambling Gambling laws are difficult to enforce Gambling laws are inconsistent across communities

Gambling laws are inconsistent across communities The main idea of this paragraph suggests that gambling laws are inconsistent across communities. The main idea of a passage can be identified by answering the following two questions: 1) What is the passage about? and 2) What point is the author trying to make? The answer options about churches and gambling laws are supporting details. Americans have contradictory attitudes towards gambling, which means some approve and some do not.

All except which of the following is a detail listed in the passage? Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/health/farm-to-table-to-fitness.html Melons contain minerals such as iron and calcium Vitamin B6 helps break down protein in the body Potassium helps the body maintain water balance Watermelon is a good source of potassium and fiber

Watermelon is a good source of potassium and fiber The passage does not state that watermelon is a good source of potassium and fiber. It does state that cantaloupe is a good source of potassium and fiber and that watermelon is a good source of potassium, but it does not state that watermelon is a good source of fiber. The passage does state that melons contain minerals such as iron and calcium, vitamin B6 helps break down protein in the body, and potassium helps the body maintain water balance.

Read the passage, then answer the following question:How does the author of this passage feel about the truck driver? The truck driver voiced his complaint about the poor conditions of the road to his passenger. Unfortunately, they had a shipment to deliver and had no choice but to continue onward. Because he was a good driver, he slowed down and took the turns carefully. This enabled them to make it to their destination safely despite the icy roads. He drove a large truck He was a complainer He was reckless He was safe

He was safe Based on the tone of the passage and the word choices, the author makes it clear that they feel that the truck driver was a safe driver: "Because he was a good driver, he slowed down and took the turns carefully."

Which of the following statements from the passage is an opinion? Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/business/unemployment-claims-affect-employer.html An employer is automatically given a percentage rate for unemployment compensation upon the start up of their business. If a company employs someone that works for only 29 "working" days, then they are not responsible. If you have substantial claims on an insurance policy, your rates will probably increase.

If you have substantial claims on an insurance policy, your rates will probably increase. The statement from the passage that is an opinion is: "If you have substantial claims on an insurance policy, your rates will probably increase." This statement is considered an opinion because it cannot be proven. The author used a judgmental word "probably" in this sentence, which helps identify it as an opinion. The other options are all facts because they can all be proved to be true. It can be proved that a company is not responsible for unemployment compensation if they employ someone who only works 29 working days. It can be proved that an employer is automatically given a percentage rate for unemployment compensation when they start the business. It can be proved that only the last employer who employed the individual for over 30 working days is responsible for the individual's unemployment claim.

Which of the following correctly identifies the passage's main idea? Migraine headaches and pregnancy In order to identify the main idea of a passage, the reader must understand what the passage is about and what point the author is making about the passage's topic. In this passage, the author's point is to discuss migraine headaches and if the headaches affect women during pregnancy. Therefore, the passage's main idea is migraine headaches and pregnancy. Cures for migraine headaches is incorrect because the passage states that there is not a cure for migraine headaches. Migraine etiology is incorrect because etiology is the study of causes, and this passage does not discuss the study of causes associated with migraine headaches; as the passage states: "it's still not known what exactly causes migraine." Early symptoms of migraine headaches is incorrect, because the passage does not discuss the symptoms associated with migraines.

All except which of the following i a detail listed in the passage? Migraine is a chronic functional disorder accompanied by periodic attacks of severe headache. The passage does state that the etiology of migraine is debatable, that there is not a cure for migraine, and that migraine is a chronic functional disorder.

Read the passage and then identify the main idea: Penicillin is considered one of the greatest of the wonder drugs. It has saved thousands of lives already and will save many more in the future. Unfortunately, it has no effect at all on most of mankind's ailments. Penicillin is a very good drug, but it is certainly not a cure-all. Penicillin is a very good drug despite its limitations Penicillin is considered a cure-all wonder drug Penicillin has no effect on mankind's ailments Penicillin has saved thousands of lives already

Penicillin is a very good drug despite its limitations The main idea of this paragraph has been split; the first portion of the main idea appears in the opening sentence and is then expressed with limitations in the closing sentence. The main idea of a passage can be identified by answering the following two questions: 1) What is the passage about? and 2) What point is the author trying to make? The other options are either incorrect assumptions or supporting details to the main idea.

The passage's overall tone can be identified as which of the following? Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/finance/understanding-mutual-funds.html Cautious Pessimistic Apathetic Passionate

Passionate The passage's overall tone can be identified as passionate. The author is passionate, or enthusiastic, about mutual funds, which is identified by the following statement: "Keeping aside the jargon when simply put, mutual funds are ...". The author shows his passion because he/she feels that it is nonsense that people are skeptical when it comes to mutual funds. The passage does not present a pessimistic tone because the passage is not negative or gloomy. The passage does not present a cautious tone because the passage does not warn people to be careful. The passage does not present an apathetic tone because the passage does not suggest that the author is indifferent to the subject of mutual funds.

Rebecca's manager did not like her. She thought that Rebecca was lazy and did not follow the rules. Rebecca thought she was following the rules, although there were still a few rules of which she wasn't aware. What can logically be inferred from this passage? Rebecca was following the rules Rebecca knew all the rules by heart Rebecca was lazy Rebecca and her manager have different opinions

Rebecca and her manager have different opinions Since the passage describes the viewpoints of two different people, we cannot be sure which viewpoint is accurate. However, there is enough information to infer that the two subjects have different viewpoints.

Rolf keeps coming by and distracting me with stories. I'm not able to focus on any of my class work! What can logically be inferred from this passage? Rolf shares a dormitory with the author Rolf visits the author frequently The author enjoys Rolf's visits The author doesn't have much school work

Rolf visits the author frequently The only conclusion we can make is that Rolf visits the author frequently. The author makes no mention of sharing a dorm with Rolf, and the other two statements are subjective.

Identify the writer's tone in the following passage:Mr. Michaels, since you obviously seem to know everything, would you like to come up here and teach this class for me? Disrespectful Sarcastic Critical Inspired

Sarcastic It is generally understood that students don't "know everything". The teacher is using a sarcastic tone to stress the point that teachers are meant to instruct, and students are meant to learn from their teachers.

Sharon sat outside on her balcony and watched the sunrise this morning. She was chilly so she put a sweater on.What can logically be inferred from this passage? Sharon's balcony has a great view of the sunrise Sharon is generally an early riser Sharon felt cold enough to put a sweater on this morning The temperature was below freezing this morning

Sharon felt cold enough to put a sweater on this morning The only logical conclusion is that Sharon felt chilly enough to put her sweater on this morning. The passage does not mention anything about the actual temperature, the view from the balcony, or Sharon's normal habits.

Which of the following statements would be considered a "fact"? Simon recorded the patient's blood pressure: one-forty over sixty. Greg loved the way she looked at him, even though she didn't know his name. She could have done better in her assessment of the patient's condition. Janice felt cheated when her boss overlooked her for promotion.

Simon recorded the patient's blood pressure: one-forty over sixty. The statement about Simon recording blood pressure is the only non-opinion-based answer option. It contains no abstract or evaluative language, and it can be measured and substantiated, unlike the other subjective statements listed.

Which of the following options best summarizes the passage? In modern medical science, there is a great emphasis on preempting problems and stopping them before they take place. When this proactive approach is not possible, the next best thing is to reverse the ill effects of whatever medical condition a person may be facing. Similar studies are being held in the field of hair care and some success has been had in recent times. A recent study in mice has given a glimmer of hope for people who have lost their hair and want to avoid hair transplant surgery with the help of stem cells. Although it is still in the testing phase, the study surely is an important step in natural hair restoration. We shall look into the matter in some detail. Stem Cells Stem cells have been a hot topic of discussion of late and there has been much talk that they may hold the future in medical science. Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that are found in the multi cellular organisms. These can be differentiated into specialized cells and can produce more stem cells by going through mitosis. Stem cells have two main types' namely embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. The Study The research took place in University of Pennsylvania. The idea was to produce enough numbers of hair follicle generating stem cells. The particular focus was on epithelium cells, which is the tissue that covers that surface of the body. The researchers were able to generate these cells in adequate numbers for hair regeneration, which was previously not done. The results in mice have been encouraging and hair growth has been seen. The Next Step Hair follicles contain a second type of cell known as dermal papillae, which are also lost with hair loss. Until their regeneration is possible, hair loss problem is still to be completely solved. Thus far, no one has been able to figure out a way to generate these cells. Criticism There has been criticism on the study citing that often the testing on the animals is successful but animal testing fails to mirror the results. For now, it is too early to draw such conclusions. In the immediate future, people will have to remain content with the more traditional methods of hair restoration. These are, for now, the very best that is available. Shezay. (2015, July 17). New Treatments for Baldness. The best hair restoration options for individuals who have lost their hair are the traditional methods that are currently offered. This is true until scientists are able to successfully use stem cells for hair restoration. Stem cell research is a viable option for hair restoration, as scientists have already conducted research on mice. They have plans of continuing their research efforts in the future. Some individuals face hair loss, and stem cell research is being conducted to determine if they are a viable option for hair restoration. So far, scientists have not been able to replicate the dermal papillae cells found in hair follicles, which has left the study of hair restoration from stem cells unsuccessful.

Some individuals face hair loss, and stem cell research is being conducted to determine if they are a viable option for hair restoration. So far, scientists have not been able to replicate the dermal papillae cells found in hair follicles, which has left the study of hair restoration from stem cells unsuccessful. The option that summarizes that pass the best is: "Some individuals face hair loss, and stem cell research is being conducted to determine if they are a viable option for hair restoration. So far, scientists have not been able to replicate the dermal papillae cells found in hair follicles, which has left the study of hair restoration from stem cells unsuccessful." This option is the best summary, because it includes the main ideas from the beginning, middle, and end of the passage in a sequential manner. The other options are incorrect because they do not provide the passage's main ideas in a sequential manner.

Which of the following correctly identifies a major supporting detail to the paragraph's main idea? Maria is watching too much television. A toddler shouldn't be spending hours staring blankly at a screen. Worse yet, some of her wild behavior has been inspired by those awful cartoons she watches. We need to spend more time reading books with her and pull the plug on the TV! Maria stares blankly at the TV screen for fun Some of Maria's wild actions are a result of watching TV Maria is watching too much television Maria's parents aren't raising her properly

Some of Maria's wild actions are a result of watching TV The main idea in this passage is that Maria is watching too much TV. One of the major supporting details states how her bad behavior has stemmed from watching TV (third sentence). The other options are either minor details or assumptions.

Read the passsage and answer the following question: Which of the following sentences is not a supporting detail to the main idea? Someday we will all have robots that will be our personal servants. They will look and behave much like real humans. We will be able to talk to these mechanical helpers and they will be able to respond in kind. Amazingly, the robots of the future will be able to learn from experience. They will be smart, strong, and untiring workers whose only goal will be to make our lives easier. They will be smart, strong, and untiring workers whose only goal will be to make our lives easier. We will be able to talk to these mechanical helpers and they will be able to respond in kind.

Someday we will all have robots that will be our personal servants. All of the answer choices are supporting details to the main idea, with the exception of "Someday we will all have robots that will be our personal servants". This opening statement serves as the main idea, and is therefore not considered a supporting detail.

Read the passage and then answer the following question: Which of the following options could be inferred by the reader? Treatment for ovarian cancer usually involves an extensive operation that includes removing both ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the uterus as well as nearby lymph nodes and a fold of fatty abdominal tissue known as the omentum, where ovarian cancer often spreads. The surgeon also removes as much cancer as possible from the abdomen.Less extensive surgery may be possible if the ovarian cancer was diagnosed at a very early stage. For women with stage I ovarian cancer, surgery may involve removing one ovary and its fallopian tube. This procedure may preserve the ability to have children. After surgery, the patient will most likely be treated with chemotherapy (drugs designed to kill any remaining cancer cells). Chemotherapy may also be used as the initial treatment in some women with advanced ovarian cancer. Chemotherapy drugs can be given in a vein (intravenously) or injected directly into the abdominal cavity, or both methods can be used. Chemotherapy drugs can be given alone or in combination. Ovarian cancer is a result of having children Stage I ovarian cancer is the least severe stage Surgeons generally earn a large income Ovarian cancer is easily treatable

Stage I ovarian cancer is the least severe stage When a question is asking you what a reader would infer from the passage, it is wanting to know which option would be considered an educated guess, as the answer is not directly stated in the passage but may be implied. The passage's second paragraph informs the reader that stage I ovarian cancer could involve the removal of one ovary and fallopian tube, which may preserve the ability to have children. With that being said, the reader could infer that stage I ovarian cancer is the least severe stage, since both ovaries are not removed.

Read the passage then answer the following question.Which of the following best defines the word "stem" as it is used in the passage? The studies also show that nearly 50 percent of teens admit to texting while driving. Distracted driving endangers life and property, and the current levels of injury and loss are unacceptable. To stem this problem, safety organizations and other government agencies are working to inform and educate the public about the dangers of distracted driving and are seeking to identify and facilitate the development of innovative technologies that could reduce the incidence of distracted driving. The author's primary purpose in writing this article is to do which of the following? To emphasize the word The author is using italics to emphasize the word and draw a distinction between connotation and denotation. Denotation refers to the literal meaning of a word, the "dictionary definition." For example, the connotations for the word "snake" could include evil or danger.

To discuss the surgeon's responsibilities during surgery To inform the reader about how ovarian cancer is treated To analyze the different stages of ovarian cancer To persuade women to get checked for ovarian cancer

Which of the following options summarizes the passage the best? Mitchell, J. (2015, July 11). Pregnancy and Migraine Attacks. Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/health/pregnancy-and-migraine-attacks.html The hormonal changes that occur during puberty generally cause females to experience symptoms of the migraine disorder. Unfortunately, the migraine disorder cannot be cured; however, there are many over-the-counter medications that will help reduce its symptoms. Pregnant women should inform their physicians when they have headaches, as it could be a sign of eclampsia. Pregnancy, however, seems to help women have fewer headaches, even if they have had a migraine disorder since puberty. A migraine attack is a disorder followed by severe headaches. During pregnancy, these attacks become less severe for the majority of women and more severe for the minority of women. Regardless, pregnant women should always report headaches to their physicians. The other options are incorrect because they do not provide the passage's main ideas in a sequential manner.

What is the meaning of the word "glimmer" as it is used in the passage? The word "glimmer" is located in the passage's second paragraph: "A recent study in mice has given a glimmer of hope for people who have lost their hair...". Using the context, the reader can determine that people, who have lost their hair, have a small amount of hope in using stem cells to restore their hair. The other options are incorrect because they would not correctly fit into the context of the passage, as people would not have a dim glow of hope, a faint flashing light of hope, or a sparkle of hope.

The researchers were able to generate these cells in adequate numbers for hair regeneration, which was previously not done. Similar studies are being held in the field of hair care and some success has been had in recent times. Although it is still in the testing phase, the study surely is an important step in natural hair restoration.

Although it is still in the testing phase, the study surely is an important step in natural hair restoration. The statement from the passage that is an opinion is: "Although it is still in the testing phase, the study surely is an important step in natural hair restoration." This statement is considered an opinion because it cannot be proven. The author used a judgmental word "surely" in this sentence, which helps identify it as an opinion. The other options are all facts because they can all be proved to be true. It can be proved that a hair follicle's second type of cell is known as dermal papillae. It can be proved that researchers generated the cells in adequate numbers. It can be proved that similar studies have been held and some of them have had success.

Which of the following options is not a statement that was listed in the given passage? Alzheimer's is a disease that causes issues with one's memory, behavior, and thinking. The onset of Alzheimer's generally develops at a slow pace and gradually gets worse over time.Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, as it accounts for 50 to 80 percent of all memory loss cases. Alzheimer's most commonly affects individuals who are over the age of 65; however, five percent of the disease cases appear in individuals who are between 40 and 50 years old. Alzheimer's disease causes memory, behavior, and thinking issues. Alzheimer's disease is a form of memory loss. Alzheimer's disease is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia.

Alzheimer's disease is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. This statement is not listed in the given passage; however, the passage does state that Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. (see paragraph 4). The other answer options can all be found within the passage.

Which of the following options correctly identifies the passage's main idea? Alzheimer's is a disease that causes issues with one's memory, behavior, and thinking. The onset of Alzheimer's generally develops at a slow pace and gradually gets worse over time.Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia as it accounts for 50 to 80 percent of all memory loss cases. Alzheimer's is the least common form of dementia Alzheimer's is a progressive form of dementia Alzheimer's is curable with the appropriate treatment plan Only those who are 65 or older need to worry about being diagnosed with Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's is a progressive form of dementia The trick to identifying the main idea of a passage is to determine what the passage is about and what point the author is trying to make about the passage's topic. In this passage, the author is talking about Alzheimer's disease and wants the reader to know that the disease is a form of dementia and that it is a progressive disease. The other answer options can be eliminated as they do not correspond with the passage's message.

Read the passage below. Then answer the question that follows. This passage would most likely appear in which of the following? An editorial A police report A scientific journal A doctoral thesis

An editorial This passage would most likely appear in an editorial. The information is not too complex; therefore, a scientific journal and a doctoral thesis can be eliminated. A police report can also be eliminated, as the information does not include the names of the parties involved.

All except which of the following is a detail listed in the passage? Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/business/unemployment-claims-affect-employer.html An ex-employee's last employer is always responsible for unemployment claims Unemployment considers a working day to be an eight-hour day An employer is responsible for unemployment claims if the ex-employee had worked more than 240 hours An ex-employee must list his last or most recent employer on his unemployment forms

An ex-employee's last employer is always responsible for unemployment claims To answer this question, the reader must read the passage and determine which detail was not presented in the passage. The passage does not state that an ex-employee's last employer is always responsible for unemployment claims. The passage states that the ex-employee must list his last employer, but if the ex-employee was not employed for 30 "working" days, then that employer is not responsible for unemployment claims. The passage did state that unemployment considers a working day to be an eight-hour day, that an employer is responsible for unemployment claims if the ex-employee had worked more than 240 hours, and that an ex-employee must list their last or most recent employer on their unemployment forms.

Read the passage and identify the main idea. A study at one prison shows that owning a pet can change a hardened prison inmate into a more caring person. Another study discovered that senior citizens became more interested in life when they were given pets to care for. Even emotionally disturbed children have been observed to smile and react with interest around adorable kittens or puppies. Animals, then, can be a means of therapy for many people. Animals can change hardened prison inmates into caring people Animals can be important in senior citizens' lives Animals can be a means of therapy for many people Animals can make emotionally disturbed children happy

Animals can be a means of therapy for many people In this example, previous sentences are building up to the main idea. The main idea is that animals can be a means of therapy for many people. Each of the other answer choices is a supporting detail of the main idea.

According to the passage, which of the following options is not something that would cause pneumonia? Pneumonia is an infection in one or both of the lungs. Many germs, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, can cause pneumonia. One can also contract pneumonia by inhaling a liquid or chemical. People most at risk are older than 65, younger than 2 years of age, or already have health problems.Symptoms of pneumonia vary from mild to severe. See your doctor promptly if you have a high fever, shaking chills, a cough with phlegm that doesn't improve or gets worse, shortness of breath when engaging in normal daily activities, chest pain when you breathe or cough, or if you suddenly feel worse after a cold or the flu. Your doctor will use your medical history, a physical exam, and lab tests to diagnose pneumonia. Treatment depends on what kind of pneumonia you have. If bacteria are the cause, antibiotics should help. If you have viral pneumonia, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medicine to treat it.Preventing pneumonia is always better than treating it. Vaccines are available to prevent pneumococcal pneumonia and the flu. Other preventive measures include washing your hands frequently and not smoking. Becoming too cold Contact with fungi Inhaling a liquid Contact with bacteria

Becoming too cold This question requires you to read the passage to identify which statement is not located within it. The passage does not state that pneumonia is caused by getting too cold; therefore, that is the correct answer. The first paragraph informs you that pneumonia can be caused by coming in contact with bacteria and fungi or by inhaling a liquid.

After reading this passage, which of the following would not be inferred by the reader? Use tax is imposed on any transaction that would be subject to regular sales tax, only the physical goods were delivered to an address inside the State of Illinois from another state. You are charged for the use of the product inside the state, because your out of state vendor did not charge their state's sales tax. Businesses are exempt from paying use tax An inference is similar to determining if a statement is true or false; however, it requires the reader to take an educated guess based on the given facts. The reader cannot infer that businesses are exempt from paying use tax because the passage states: "If you have a lot of Internet type purchases of equipment for use in your business, sometimes these purchases can trigger an audit." The business's Internet type purchases of equipment can trigger an audit because the business is subject to use tax. The reader can infer that use tax must be reported when filing income tax returns because the passage states that there is now a box that asks whether or not the taxpayer made any purchases outside of the state that would be subject to use tax. The reader can infer that Internet purchases are not truly free of tax because the end user should pay use tax on that item. The reader can infer that identifying individuals who don't pay use tax has become easier because the passage states: "As the computer systems at the taxation agencies have improved and more transactions are being digitized, the enforcement of Illinois Use Tax collection has improved greatly."

What is the main idea in this passage? The computer would not turn on, even though Carlos kept pushing the power button. He was probably going to be late for dinner. The library is a good place to do homework Computers are not reliable Carlos is going to be late for dinner Carlos still has a lot of homework to do before he can go home

Carlos still has a lot of homework to do before he can go home The main idea in the passage is that Carlos still has a lot of homework to do before he can go home. Three out of the four sentences refer to this idea and the overall tone of the passage implies that this is the important message. The main idea of a passage can be identified by answering the following two questions: 1) What is the passage about? and 2) What point is the author trying to make?

Read the passage and then answer the following question: Which of the following options correctly identifies the passage's main idea? Pneumonia is an infection in one or both of the lungs. Many germs, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, can cause pneumonia. One can also contract pneumonia by inhaling a liquid or chemical. Causes, symptoms, and treatments of pneumonia The trick to identifying the main idea of a passage is to determine what the passage is about and what point the author is trying to make about the passage's topic. The passage mostly discusses the causes of pneumonia, the symptoms you should watch for, and the treatments that are available for both treating and preventing it.

Which of the following options is not a statement that was mentioned in the given passage? Drugs that kill cancer cells are known as chemotherapy Chemotherapy is always given after ovarian surgery Chemotherapy drugs are sometimes injected into the abdominal cavity A female may still be able to have children if only one ovary is removed

Chemotherapy is always given after ovarian surgery This question is asking you to identify a statement that is not located in the given passage. The passage does not state that chemotherapy is always given after ovarian surgery; however, it does state that the patient will most likely be treated with chemotherapy after surgery.

According to the passage, which form of glaucoma causes excessive tearing? Congenital Angle-closure Normal-tension Low-tension

Congenital As stated in the passage's fourth paragraph, congenital glaucoma is the form of glaucoma that causes excessive tearing. Congenital glaucoma also has the following symptoms: cloudy eyes and sensitivity to light. Low- or normal-tension glaucoma does not list any symptoms and angle-closure glaucoma's symptoms are severe pain, nausea, redness of the eye, and blurred vision.

Read the passage below. Then answer the following question:Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? Which type of mutual fund is explained in the passage? Read the passage below. Then answer the following question: The passage answers all except which of the following questions? Every day, thousands of eBooks are downloaded from various sites. EBooks have steadily taken over the book market, and are now surpassing paper book sales by 10%. This year alone, 5 million eBooks have already been downloaded, whereas only 4.5 million paper books have been sold. The book industry expects the eBook market to surpass paper book sales by 30% by the end of next year. Are future eBook sales expected to grow? How many paper books have been sold this year? According to the passage, what is a dangerous complication associated with pregnancy? Eclampsia The passage's last paragraph informs the reader that eclampsia is a dangerous complication associated with pregnancy: "...it might be a symptom of eclampsia, a very dangerous complication of pregnancy." Migraine, hormonal changes, and aura pregnancy are incorrect because the passage does not state that they are dangerous complications associated with pregnancy. However, the passage does state that an aura pregnancy could cause migraine symptoms to become worse.

Educate the reader about use tax The author's primary purpose for writing this article is to educate the reader about use tax. The author begins the passage by identifying what use tax is and then discusses how the nonpayment of use tax could result in an audit. The passage does not analyze the differences between use tax and sales tax. The passage does not persuade the reader to make Internet purchases. The passage only discusses use tax; therefore, it does not discuss multiple state income tax topics.

The author's primary purpose in writing this article is to do which of the following? Educate the reader on the factors that affect blood pressure The author's primary purpose in writing this article is to educate the reader on the factors that affect blood pressure. The author takes the time to list the factors that cause high blood pressure and low blood pressure and how those factors affect blood pressure. The author is not trying to persuade the reader to do anything, nor is the author informing the reader of the health risks associated with blood pressure. The author does not analyze the difference between high and low blood pressure.

The football team unfairly lost to their rival school last Friday night. With a score of 6-28, they were robbed of their final win of the season.Using context clues, what does the word "rival" mean in this sentence? Enemy Close Distant Friend

Enemy The word rival denotes a competitive relationship between two things, similar to an enemy. Context clues can help the reader to determine the meaning of a word that they do not know. Use context clues as a way to understand more words in a passage.

Identify the writer's purpose in the following passage: Dana always looked forward to the fall because of the Harvest Festival. Of course, she loved the rides, but she really enjoyed the shows. This year would be the best. Dana had a special opportunity to perform in the talent show. Entertain Inform Persuade Enhance

Entertain The purpose of the story is to entertain the reader with the story of Dana's talent show opportunity. It is not trying to persuade, nor is it trying to teach or inform the reader of anything in particular.

Which of the following correctly identifies the passage's main idea? Use tax is imposed on any transaction that would be subject to regular sales tax, only the physical goods were delivered to an address inside the State of Illinois from another state. You are charged for the use of the product inside the state, because your out of state vendor did not charge their state's sales tax. If you do not pay use tax on the transaction in Illinois and are audited, you will probably have a problem. You would be subject to the original Illinois use tax, as well as interest and penalty. As the computer systems at the taxation agencies have improved and more transactions are being digitized, the enforcement of Illinois Use Tax collection has improved greatly. There is now a box on all Illinois Income Tax Returns that asks whether or not the taxpayer made any purchases outside of the state that would be subject to use tax. The biggest problems normally come in the event of an audit. They normally check all of the invoices and receipts to see if any of your transactions were subject to Illinois Use Tax. If you have a lot of internet type purchases of equipment for use in your business, sometimes these purchases can trigger an audit. Amundson, C. (2015, July 15). What is Illinois Use Tax. Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/business/what-is-illinois-use-tax.html Internet purchases trigger audits Facts about use tax Businesses that are required to pay use tax Filing income tax returns

Facts about use tax In order to identify the main idea of a passage, the reader must understand what the passage is about and what point the author is making about the passage's topic. The passage is about use tax, and the point that the author is making about use tax is that individuals should know that facts that are associated with use tax. Therefore, the passage's main idea is: facts about use tax. The passage does mention that Internet purchases could trigger audits, but that is not the main idea of the passage. The passage does mention that businesses are required to pay use tax, but that is not the main idea of the passage. The passage does mention income tax returns, but it does not mention anything about filing them.

Read the passage below. Then answer the following question:Which of the following statements would the author most likely support? How much do fantasy football leagues cost employers? Fantasy football leagues have increased in popularity, so much so that employers are starting to realize their effects. Studies have shown that fantasy football is costing employers billions of dollars due to lost employee productivity.Fantasy football players draft their own teams from NFL rosters and compete head-to-head each week for the length of an NFL season. The players usually form leagues with other coworkers or a group of friends, and then their team plays against one of their friends' teams in their league. After taking unemployment into account, a study estimates that 22.3 million employed fantasy football players spend at least an hour a week managing or discussing their rosters. Reports show that $19.33 is the average hourly wage, so that comes out to $430.9 million per week lost, or $6.5 billion across a 15-week fantasy season. Fantasy football players use company time to monitor their teams Smartphones have made it really easy for fantasy football players to monitor their teams Fantasy football players do not discuss their teams on company time Fantasy football is a thing of the past

Fantasy football players use company time to monitor their teams The author discusses how fantasy football costs employers billions of dollars during a football season. Therefore, it is most likely that the author would agree that the players use company time to monitor their teams.

Because the damp sponge was left under the sink, it began developing "mold". Based on the context of the previous sentence, which of the following would be an appropriate synonym choice for "mold"? Casts Fungus Forms Stains

Fungus The word mold in this context is synonymous of the word fungus. The sponge was growing fungus underneath the sink.

Which of the following options properly defines the word "intravenously" as it is used in the passage's third paragraph? Injected Treatment Cancer drugs Given in a vein

Given in a vein The answer to this question can be found in the context of the passage. Since the word "intravenously" is located in parentheses within paragraph 3, you can determine that the meaning of the word is located before it ("given in a vein").

Which of the following sentences is not a supporting detail to the main idea? Growing herbs in your windowsill garden can be both gratifying and delicious. Herbs are a great plant to grow in a small space. They make amazing accents to almost every dish. Herb gardens also require less maintenance than a full garden. You can garden in your spare time and still grow healthy plants. Growing herbs in your windowsill garden can be both gratifying and delicious. Herbs are a great plant to grow in a small space. Herb gardens also require less maintenance than a full garden. You can garden in your spare time and still grow healthy plants.

Growing herbs in your windowsill garden can be both gratifying and delicious. The main idea is the first sentence in this passage: "Growing herbs in your windowsill garden can be both gratifying and delicious." All of the other sentences support that main idea and are called supporting details. To check this, compare each sentence to the main idea to see if it relates to the main theme.

After reading this passage, all except which of the following would be inferred by the reader? Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/health/new-treatments-for-baldness.html Hair implant surgery is not favored by some individuals who have lost their hair Hair restoration has been a focus of study for some researches in the past Stem cell use has the potential to expand in the future Hair loss occurs the same in mice as it does in humans

Hair loss occurs the same in mice as it does in humans The passage does not infer that hair loss occurs the same in mice as it does in humans. The passage simply states that a hair restoration study was conducted on mice; it does not imply that the study was conducted on mice because they also lose their hair. An inference is similar to determining if a statement is true or false; however, it requires the reader to take an educated guess based on the given facts. The passage does infer that hair implant surgery is not favored by some, as the second paragraph states: "...people who have lost their hair and want to avoid hair transplant surgery...". The passage does infer that stem cell use has the potential to expand in the future because the passage states: "Stem cells have been a hot topic of discussion of late and there has been much talk that they may hold the future in medical science." The passage does infer that hair restoration has been a focus of study for some researches in the past because the passage states: "Similar studies are being held in the field of hair care and some success has been had in recent times."

Read the passage below. Then answer the following question:The passage answers all except which of the following questions? Video marketing has grown at alarming rates. By next year, video will account for 90% of Internet traffic. When marketers used the word "video" in an e-mail subject line, the open rates of marketing e-mails rose from 7% to 13%. Video in e-mail marketing has also been shown to increase click-through rates by more than 96%. Marketing videos do not require expensive camera equipment, but they do require creativity and planning. How much has video e-mail marketing increased click-through rates? What percentage of Internet traffic will video account for next year? How much have e-mail open rates increased since "video" was included in the subject line? How many marketing e-mails with videos are sent out each day?

How many marketing e-mails with videos are sent out each day? The passage discusses the click-through rate of e-mails containing videos and the increase in e-mails being opened when they have "video" in the subject line, but it does not state how many marketing e-mails with videos are sent out each day.

Which of the following correctly identifies the passage's main idea? Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/business/unemployment-claims-affect-employer.html How unemployment claims affect an employer How unemployment affects an employer's tax rates When employers are responsible for unemployment compensation The percentage rates used to figure unemployment claims

How unemployment claims affect an employer In order to identify the main idea of a passage, the reader must understand what the passage is about and what point the author is making about the passage's topic. In this passage, the author is discussing unemployment claims and when an employer is responsible for them. Therefore, the option that best identifies the passage's main idea is: "How unemployment claims affect an employer." The last paragraph talks about the employer's tax rates, but it is not the passage's main idea. When employers are responsible for unemployment compensation is an option that closely resembles the passage's main idea, but the passage discusses more than just when the employer is responsible for paying unemployment claims. The percentage rates used to figure unemployment claims is incorrect because the passage does not discuss the actual percentage rates used.

Which of the following options is not a statement that was listed in the given passage? Congenital glaucoma is a birth defect. Individuals with angle-closure glaucoma may experience increased eye pressure. Serious vision loss can often be avoided with early detection of glaucoma. Increasing eye pressure slows glaucoma in some people.

Increasing eye pressure slows glaucoma in some people. In order to identify the statement that is not listed in the passage, you will need to read the passage. The passage's second paragraph informs the reader that lowering the eye pressure, not increasing the eye pressure, can sometimes slow glaucoma. Paragraph four states that children are born with congenital glaucoma; therefore, it is a birth defect. Paragraph three informs the reader that individuals with angle-closure glaucoma may experience increased eye pressure. Paragraph one states that serious vision loss can often be avoided with early detection of glaucoma.

Read the passage, then answer the following question: Which of the following options could be inferred by the reader? Bacterial pneumonia is worse than viral pneumonia Individuals who are healthy are less likely to contract pneumonia Treatment for pneumonia does not vary Doctors make more money treating pneumonia than they do preventing it

Individuals who are healthy are less likely to contract pneumonia When a question is asking you what a reader would infer from the passage, it is wanting to know which option would be considered an educated guess, as the answer is not directly stated in the passage but may be implied. The passage's first paragraph states that people are more at risk for pneumonia when they already have health problems; therefore, you can infer that people who are healthy are less likely to get pneumonia.

Read the passage and answer the following question:What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage? Receive support for a future law to ban the use of mobile devices while driving Ask readers to donate to the cause Introduce new technology that is available Inform readers of the dangers associated with distracted driving

Inform readers of the dangers associated with distracted driving The passage provides statistical data to show the effects of driving distracted, then continues to discuss the steps that are being taken to help prevent distracted driving. The other answer choices are partially what the passage discusses, but they do not provide the main purpose of the passage.

Read the passage and then answer the following question. Which word best describes the tone of this passage? Crayons are manufactured in a step by step process. First, the wax is melted and mixed with chemicals to form the content of the crayon. Next, pigment is added to obtain the correct color. Then, the material is poured into molds and cut into the correct shape. Finally, the wrapper paper is put on and the crayons are loaded into a box for shipment. Inquisitive Instructional Informative Argumentative

Informative The structure of a passage will not be explicitly stated but instead needs to be inferred from the passage as a whole. A sentence's structure will help the reader understand the author's intent for writing the sentence. In this case, the passage is informative, as it is informing the reading of how crayons are made. An instructional sentence would provide the reader with step-by-step instructions. A persuasive sentence would persuade the reader to buy something or to believe in something. An argumentative sentence would argue why one point-of-view is better than a different point-of-view.

Read the passage below. Then answer the following question:Which of the following identifies the author's main point of the passage? Parents should listen to their children It is important to wear your seat belt Vehicle accidents cause spinal cord injuries Individuals die in vehicle accidents

It is important to wear your seat belt The author's main point in the passage is "it is important to wear your seat belt." The author uses statistical facts to prove that it is important to wear your seat belt. The other answer choices are all true, but are not central to the overall theme of the passage. Vehicle accidents cause spinal cord injuries Individuals die in vehicle accidents

Which of these is not true about a summary? It should be in sequential order It should only be three sentences long It should contain accurate information It should include all of the main ideas from each part of the passage

It should only be three sentences long There is no length limit on a well-constructed summary. A good summary will include all of the main points of the passage. It will also be in sequential order (start at the beginning, then go to the middle, then finish at the end). It should also always have accurate information.

According to the passage, which of the following can sometimes trigger an audit? Use tax is imposed on any transaction that would be subject to regular sales tax, only the physical goods were delivered to an address inside the State of Illinois from another state. Making multiple Internet type purchases The passage's last paragraph states: "If you have a lot of Internet type purchases of equipment for use in your business, sometimes these purchases can trigger an audit." Therefore, the reader can determine that making multiple Internet-type purchases can sometimes trigger an audit. The passage does not state that filing state income tax online, making out-of-state purchases, or paying use tax when filing the state income tax return would trigger an audit.

Which of the following identifies the main idea of the passage? In earlier days, those who had overseas business took ship and set out across the briny deep. Once aboard, they transacted their affairs, engaging in commercial and social matters. Today ships and passengers continue to sail the seven seas, and airplanes soar overhead. Yet above them all, words speed through the sky - telephone conversations quickly bring together people who are separated by thousands of miles. Nothing can take the place of face-to-face conversation in settling commercial and social matters. Many conversations which once required overseas travel can now be conducted by phone. Even with modern overseas telephone service, people continue to travel abroad by ship or plane. Overseas telephone service today is ruling out all need for overseas travel.

Many conversations which once required overseas travel can now be conducted by phone. The main idea of this paragraph suggests conversations which once required overseas travel can now be conducted by phone. The main idea of a passage can be identified by answering the following two questions: 1) What is the passage about? and 2) What point is the author trying to make? The other options are either supporting details or incorrect assumptions.

What is the meaning of the word "jargon" as it is used in the passage? Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/finance/understanding-mutual-funds.html Value Confusion Recognition Nonsense

Nonsense The word "jargon" is used in the passage to mean nonsense. From the context, the reader can gather that the author feels that it is nonsense that individuals are skeptical when it comes to mutual funds. The passage's context does not imply that the word "jargon" is used to mean confusion, recognition, or value.

Read the passage and answer the following question: According to the passage, which of the following options would be used to make reference to a fold of fatty abdominal tissue? Treatment for ovarian cancer usually involves an extensive operation that includes removing both ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the uterus as well as nearby lymph nodes and a fold of fatty abdominal tissue known as the omentum, where ovarian cancer often spreads. The surgeon also removes as much cancer as possible from the abdomen.Less extensive surgery may be possible if the ovarian cancer was diagnosed at a very early stage. Chemotherapy drugs can be given in a vein (intravenously) or injected directly into the abdominal cavity, or both methods can be used. Chemotherapy drugs can be given alone or in combination. Fallopian Tube Omentum Ovary Uterus

Omentum The answer to this question can be found in the context of the passage. The passage's first paragraph informs the reader that a fold of fatty abdominal tissue is known as omentum.

The singer chose a melancholy song for her final song of the evening. It left the audience feeling introspective on their way home.Using context clues from the passage, what is a good synonym for the word "melancholy"? Energetic Intellectual Melodic Pensive

Pensive Melancholy means introspective, deep, thought-provoking. A synonym is a word with a similar meaning to the other word. Pensive is a synonym for melancholy.

The word "hypertension" is used in the passage to mean which of the following? Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/health/factors-that-may-affect-your-blood-pressure.html Persistently high blood pressure Persistently low blood pressure Persistently high stress levels Persistently low water intake

Persistently high blood pressure The answer to this question can be obtained by the context statement given in the passage: "Persistently high blood pressure is called hypertension..." The passage informs you that low blood pressure is called hypotension. The other two choices are incorrect as they are not the meaning of hypertension.

Identify the writer's purpose in the following passage: Do you recycle your aluminum cans or throw them in the trash? At the rate we are filling our landfills, we will not have anywhere else to put our trash. If you recycle, you will help the environment. The next time you throw away your soda can, think about putting it in a recycling bin. Your effort will help save your community. Enhance Entertain Persuade Inform

Persuade The objective of this passage is to persuade the reader to recycle their aluminum cans. The writer provides examples of why we should recycle, and is prompting the reader to take action the next time they have the opportunity to recycle.

According to the passage, what does the word "lycopene" mean? Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/health/farm-to-table-to-fitness.html Vitamin that promotes eye health Fluid that causes muscle cramps Immune system booster Pigment that produces a red color

Pigment that produces a red color The reader can find the meaning of lycopene directly in the context of the passage, as the writer provides an explanation directly after the word: "...lycopene, which is the pigment that gives the melon and other produce the red color." The other options are incorrect, as they do not appropriately identify the meaning of lycopene. A vitamin that promotes eye health is Vitamin A. Vitamin A also helps boost the immune system. The passage does not state that there is a fluid that causes muscle cramps; however, it does state that watermelon contains fluids that will help prevent muscle cramps.

All except which of the following is a detail listed in the passage? Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/health/factors-that-may-affect-your-blood-pressure.html Normal blood pressure is 120/80 Pregnancy releases adrenaline that elevates blood pressure Salt consumption overstimulates the nervous system Smoking elevates blood pressure

Pregnancy releases adrenaline that elevates blood pressure The reader can answer this question by directly reading the details listed in the passage. The passage states that stress releases adrenaline that elevates blood pressure, not pregnancy. Pregnancy lowers blood pressure due to increased blood circulation. The passage does state that normal blood pressure is 120/80, that smoking elevates blood pressure, and that salt consumption overstimulates the nervous system.

Kristen went shopping for the perfect dress to wear to the dance this weekend. She wanted a dress that was knee-length and flowed freely. She did not like floral patterns and instead wanted a solid-colored material. She spent several hours looking for the right dress before she eventually found it.Which of the options is not a supporting detail? She liked knee-length dresses She went shopping for a dress She did not like floral patterns She wanted a dress that flowed freely

Which of the following identifies the passage's main idea? Retrieved July 17, 2015, from http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/health/new-treatments-for-baldness.html Stem cells are a possibility for natural hair restoration in the future Mice have provided hope for individuals who suffer from hair loss Scientists have not been able to replicate the dermal papillae cells found in hair follicles Stem cells are a hot topic of discussion in modern medical science

Stem cells are a possibility for natural hair restoration in the future In order to identify the main idea of a passage, the reader must understand what the passage is about and what point the author is making about the passage's topic. The passage is about stem cells and the possibility of using them in hair restoration. The point that the author is making about the passage's topic is that the research is being conducted, but at this time, the research has not been successful. Therefore, the passage's main idea is: Stem cells are a possibility for natural hair restoration in the future. The other choices do not answer what the passage is about or what the author's point is; therefore, they are incorrect.

All except which of the following is a detail listed in the passage? The passage states that taxpayers are required to pay use tax on taxable items that they purchase from another state and use within their own state. The passage does state that the Illinois tax collection enforcement has improved, that audits generally cause the biggest problems in regards to use tax, and that the Illinois Income Tax Return now asks if the taxpayer made purchases outside of the state.

What is the author's opinion of the monster in this passage? The scary monster crept out from underneath the bed when the lights went out. He slowly put his deformed paw out and stretched his toes. Question 81 / 100 Read the passage below. Then answer the following question:Why does the author state that organizations are facilitating the development of innovative technologies? Hide Passage The increased usage of mobile devices has had some unintended and even dangerous consequences. Read the passage and answer the following question: Which of the following options identifies the author's purpose for writing this article? To educate the reader on different types of glaucoma Show Explanation To persuade the reader to see an eye doctor on a regular basis To inform the reader about eye care To discuss the different treatments used for glaucoma

To educate the reader on different types of glaucoma The purpose of the passage is the reason for writing and reading it. The author starts the passage by defining glaucoma and then continues to inform the reader about the different types of glaucoma; therefore, the author's purpose of the passage is to educate the reader on different types of glaucoma.

Read the passage and then answer the following question: Which of the following statements is a fact? Pneumonia is an infection in one or both of the lungs. Many germs, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, can cause pneumonia. One can also contract pneumonia by inhaling a liquid or chemical. People most at risk are older than 65, younger than 2 years of age, or already have health problems.Symptoms of pneumonia vary from mild to severe. See your doctor promptly if you have a high fever, shaking chills, a cough with phlegm that doesn't improve or gets worse, shortness of breath when engaging in normal daily activities, chest pain when you breathe or cough or if you suddenly feel worse after a cold or the flu. A vaccination hurts more than swallowing a pill Pneumonia is worse than the flu Doctors prefer to treat pneumonia over the flu Vaccinations are available to prevent pneumonia

Vaccinations are available to prevent pneumonia When reading a passage, you can determine when a statement is a fact or an opinion by the statement's ability to be proven right or wrong. The statement "vaccinations are available to prevent pneumonia" is a fact that can easily be proven right or wrong; therefore, it is the correct answer. Read the passage below. Then answer the following question:Which one of the following statements would the author most likely agree with regarding wearing your seat belt? Wearing a seat belt could save your life if you are involved in a vehicle accident Parents always listen to the advice of their children Wearing a seat belt is harmful to your spinal cord Wearing your seat belt during a vehicle accident increases your risk of being injured

Wearing a seat belt could save your life if you are involved in a vehicle accident The sentence that the author would most likely agree with is: "Wearing a seat belt could save your life if you are involved in a vehicle accident." This statement is supported by the statistical data that is presented in the second paragraph.

Read the passage below. Then answer the following question: The passage answers all questions below except: Gift and estate taxes are set to rise next year. Congress has announced that tax rates on estates and gifts will increase next year. Currently, lifetime gifts of $5 million are exempted from taxes, with any amount over that taxed at 35%. Next year, the tax rate will be 55%. For next year, estate tax exemption of $5 million will drop to $1 million, and the taxes on any overage will rise from 35% to 55%. Will property taxes increase next year? How much will the tax rate on estates increase next year? What is the current tax exemption for lifetime gifts? How much will the tax on lifetime gifts increase next year?

Will property taxes increase next year? The passage discusses the increase in estate and lifetime gift taxes, but it does not discuss property taxes. The other choices are all discussed in the passage.
