stanza

A group of lines/verses in a poem

end rhyme

A word at the end of one line rhymes with a word at the end of another line; Example: "It's me Tyrone up here all alone rapping into a microphone

Onomatopoeia

A word that imitates the sound it represents. Example- Bang!

Consonance

Repetition of a consonant sound within two or more words in close proximity; repeating sound shows up throughout the words; Example: Seven silly sisters sang songs.

Assonance

Repetition of a vowel sound within two or more words in close proximity; Example: Try to light the fire.

Alliteration

Repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words; Example: "with wicked whispers"

Simile

a comparison between unlike things using like or as; her eyes shone like crystals

Metaphor

a comparison between unlike things without using like or as; Example- "for I am coconut"

Hyperbole

a great exaggeration; Example- "I have been here before, choking in solitude..."

rhyme scheme

a pattern of letters given to the end rhyme in a poem; example: aabb, abcb, etc.

Personificaiton

giving human qualities to nonhuman objects; Example- The night whispers.

Parallel Structure

repetition of the same pattern of words or phrases within a sentence or passage in the same location/with the same structure

internal rhyme

rhyme that occurs within a single line/verse of poetry or between two phrases across multiple lines (rhyming words cannot both be at the end of a line); Example: "since fear is here"

Irony

saying one thing and meaning another; Maggie exclaimed, "What nice weather we're having," during the snowstorm.

Repetition

saying words or phrases more than once for effect; Example- "Don't look back. Don't look back. Don't look back."

Allusion

the act or practice of making a casual or indirect reference to something of historical, cultural, literary, or political significance; Example: Don't be such a Romeo.

Rhythm

the beat or measured sound of strong and light syllables in a line of poetry

Imagery

the use of select words to create a mental picture
