Public opinion

Socialism

A survey of the public or of a sample of public opinion to acquire information.

Reconstruction Amendments

Congressional Reconstruction included the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth amendments to the Constitution that extended civil and legal protections to former slaves.

Sherman Act (Antitrust Act of 1890)

First national legislation in the world against monopoly; prohibited trusts, restraint of trade, and monopolization, but the law was vague and ineffective; tycoons found a way to get out.

Poll tax

Small taxes that were levied on the right to vote. Poll taxes were used by most Southern states to exclude African Americans from voting registers. The Twenty-Fourth Amendment declared poll taxes void in 1964.

Prospective voting

Voting based on what a candidate pledges to do in the future about an issue if elected.
