Pressure is measured in....

If the speed of a fluid increases, the pressure that fluid exerts on objects in it decreases

State Bernoulli's Principle

Pascal

The SI unit of pressure

Hydraulic device

The transmission of pressure equally in all directions in a liquid. Piece of machinery used to increase force

Fluids

Which type of substance does Pascal's principle deal with?

A2= 10m2

You can exert 50N of force on a piston with an area of 1.0m2. If you are trying to lift a machine that weighs 500N, what must be the area of the piston on which the machine rests?

A1= 0.125m2

You can exert 50N of force. You want to lift a machine that weighs 4000N and is on a piston with an area of 10m2. What size piston must you press down upon to lift the machine?

Pascal's principle explanation

A change in pressure at any point in an enclosed fluid will be transmitted equally to all parts of the fluid. Pascal's principle is stated as P1 = P2. Because P = F/A, Pascal's principle can be expressed F1/A1 = F2/A2.

Pneumatic device

A device that uses air to work by applying pressure.

F2= 66.7N

A hydraulic lift is used to lift a heavy machine that is pushing down on a 3.0m2 piston (A1) with a force (F1) of 4,000N. What force (F2) needs to be exerted on a 0.050m2 piston (A2) to lift the machine?

F2= 200N

A hydraulic lift is used to lift a heavy machine that is pushing down on a 5.0m2 piston with a force of 1,000N. What force needs to be exerted on a 1.0m2 piston to lift the machine?

weight

A measure of the force of gravity on an object

A = F x P

Area calculation

Pressure

Is a measure of the amount of force exerted on a surface divided by the area of the surface
