Emphasis

AKA focus) is an area of emphasis or focus to draw the eye to it. E.g. wave patterns, color, change in form, or ornamentation.

Rhythm

is a regular pulsation or recurrent pattern of movement. An example of fast rhythm in hair design is tight curls (a slow rhythm would be larger shapes or long waves).

Proportion

the comparative relationship of one thing to another.

Harmony

holds all the other elements of the design together.

Balance

is establishing equal or appropriate proportions to create symmetry.
