Leukemia

Type of cancer that involves the overproduction of leucocytes

"lub-dub"

Sounds of blood against closed valves "Lub" - AV valve "Dub" - Semilunar valve

Artery

Carry blood away from the heart Most arteries carry oxygenated blood

Vein

Carry blood towards the heart Most veins carry deoxygenated blood

Sickle-cell anemia

Abnormal "sickle-shaped" hemoglobin

When the antigen and antibody bind, they clump together in what is called a

Agglutination reaction

A

Antigen - A Antibody - B Can donate to A, AB Can receive A, O

O

Antigen - AB No antibody Can donate to A, B, AB, O Can receive O

Atherosclerosis

Involves the buildup of plaque which impairs blood flow

Blood circulation

Pulmonary circulation Deoxygenated blood from body to superior/inferior vena cava to right atrium to right ventricle to pulmonary trunk to pulmonary arteries to left and right lungs Systemic circulation Oxygenated blood from lungs to pulmonary veins to left atrium to left ventricle to ascending/descending aorta to body

Formed elements of blood

Erythrocytes Platelets Leukocytes --> Granulocytes and argranulocytes

Cardiac output

stroke volume x pulse rate

Heart murmur

A heart murmur is a swishing sound heard when there is turbulent or abnormal blood flow across the heart valve

Fetal versus adult circulatory systems

Exchange of gases takes place in the placenta, not the lungs Fetal pigs have ductus arteriosus and foramen ovale

Spleen

Filters blood

Thoracic region

Heart R. and L. atria R. and L. ventricles Veins (blue latex) Cranial (superior) vena cava Caudal (inferior) vena cava Arteries (pink latex) Aortic arch/aorta Pulmonary artery (trunk) Ductus arteriosus

Umbilical arteries

The umbilical arteries carry the non-oxygenated blood away from the heart to the placenta for oxygenation

Do all veins carry deoxygenated blood? Do all arteries carry oxygenated blood?

Unlike other arteries, the pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood. Once the veins have brought this blood from the body to the heart, it is pumped to the lungs. The pulmonary vein moves the oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the heart.

Abdominal cavity

Veins (blue latex) Caudal vena cava Umbilical vein Arteries (pink latex) Abdominal aorta Umbilical arteries

Neck region

Veins (blue latex) External jugular Internal jugular vein Arteries (pink latex) Common carotid
