Serial Interlock Loop System

A series-circuit, or daisy chain, system that connects all the high voltage devices in on a hybrid system. The controller senses if any high voltage connectors or covers are disconnected. If any devices are disconnected the controller opens the high voltage battery-pack contactors or relays

NPN Transistor

A small current is induced into the based and is amplified to create a larger current emitter

Hall Effect Speed/Position Sensors

A transducer that varies it voltage in response to magnetic field

Hybrid-

A vehicle that uses more than one propulsion system to supply power to the vehicle drive system

Micro Hybrid

A vehicle with stop start technology

Mild Hybrid

A vehicle with stop start technology, regenerative braking, and engine assist

Full (strong) Hybrid

A vehicle with stop start, regenerative braking, and propulsion on elective power alone

Can PAG oil be used on hybrids

NO!

What kind of battery does a prius have?

Nickel Metal Hydride

Stators

Nonmoving part of an electric machine that encloses the rotor

Prius Planetary Gear Set

Ring Gear- MG2 Sun Gear- MG1 Planet Carrier- Connected to Engine.

Negative Slip

Rotor leads Stator (Regenerative Braking)

Insulation Testers

Tester used to detect reduction in resistance between high voltage circuits, components, or systems and the vehicle chassis

Inverter Capacitors (the large ones)

The Capacitors are used to store energy for the controller and for power flow correction.

Pulse Width Modulation

The control of a solenoid by using a pulse on-and-off method

Permanent Magnet Rotors

The moving part of the electric machine. With magnets attached that create the magnetic fields instead of mutual induction.

Grounded Switch Interlock System

modified LIP system that uses switches located within its components to provide a ground for the hybrid controller sense circuit. When any of the switches are opened, the battery-pack controller opens the contactors or relays

Current Sensors

A sensor that provides a motor controller feedback info on phase current

Resolvers

A sensor that provides two sine waves to a motor controller to indicate absolute rotor position and speed

Characteristics of a Parallel Circuit

- The total resistance of the circuit is always less than the smallest resistance leg. - Voltage is the same for each leg of a parallel circuit - The sum of the individual currents equal the total current.

Characteristics of a Series Circuit

- Total resistance is the sum of the individual resistances - Current is constant throughout the entire circuit. - The voltage drops across each resistance

What is the job of the inverter?

-Convert AC to DC -Step up and reduce current

What are contractors used for?

-Disconnect the HEV battery -Prevent Capacitors from overcharging

Why is High Voltage Used?

-Less heat -Smaller cables (Diameter)

What are the shapes of the HEV battery cells

-Prism -Cylindrical

Flyback Diode

A diode that is connected in reverse bias position across the emitter and collector of an IGBT in order to steer reactive current during regenerative braking mode.

Modified Atkinson-Cycle Engines

A four stroke engine in which the intake valve is held open longer than normal to allow the expansion ratio to exceed the effective compression ratio

Local Interlock Loop System

A high voltage safety system that uses discrete switches with the high-voltage bus to signal the control that there is a breach. After the breach the controller opens the battery-pack contactors to remove power from the high voltage bus or components.

Service Disconnect Switches

A mechanical level or rotating switch that is used to remove power from the high voltage system

Series/Parallel Power Flow Systems

Allows the electric transaxle to provide propulsion when the engine and not running (series) or add the engine torque to the electric transaxle and then transmitted through the drive axle. (parallel)

Parallel Power Flow Systems

An engine connected directly to transaxle or drivetrain with electric machines connected in parallel. Electric machine torque is added in parallel to Engine torque and cannot be used by itself

Rating for Multimeters

CATIII meter

Electrical Safety Glove Rating

Class 0 maximum of 1000 volts

Speed of a Motor

Determined by frequency (Hz) of the stator

DC-DC Converter

Device that converts High voltage DC current to Low voltage DC current and vice versa

Series Power Flow Systems

Engine connected in series to a generator which sends power to the electric drive motor and battery back. Engine not directly connected to drivetrain.

Mutual Induction

Expansion or collapse of a magnetic field around a coil that creates a voltage in the second coil

High Voltage Level

Greater than 60v DC or 30v AC rms

Ohm's law

I(Amps)= V(volts) ÷ R(Resistance)

Where is the HEV battery fuse located

In the Disconnect Plug

Motor Control Waveforms

Sine, trapezoid, Six-Step, and Square

What waveforms create the most ripple effect?

Six-Step and Square

Positive Slip

Stator leads the Rotor (Driving Forward)

How are HEV battery cells connected?

They are connected in Series

Torque of a Motor

Torque is determined by field strength or voltage

Transaxle Damper Assembly

Transmit power and torque to the electronically variable transmission. Uses coil springs to dampen vibrations and pulsations in the driveline
