Sensory Neuron (Afferent)

Brings sensory information to the CNS. In a reflex arc, this is in the spinal cord.

Receptor

Detects the stimulus. i.e. pain, touch, temperature.

Synapse

Point of contact between the axon terminal of one neuron (sender) and dendrite of the receiving neuron. Area where one neuron communicates with another.

Effectors

Smooth, skeletal or cardiac muscle or glands that create a response to the stimulus.

Interneuron

Synapses with the Sensory Neuron and Motor Neuron in the spinal cord (CNS).

Motor Neuron (Efferent)

Takes sensory information and activates effectors to elicit a response to the stimulus.
