function

1. A relationship from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) that assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. 2. The action or actions that an item is designed to perform.

coordinate plane

A coordinate system formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line, called the x-axis, and a vertical number line, called the y-axis.

arithmetic sequence

A numerical pattern that increases or decreases at a constant rate or value. The difference between successive terms of the sequence is constant.

ordered pair

A pair of numbers that can be used to locate a point on a coordinate plane

vertical line test

A test used to determine whether a relation is a function by checking if a vertical line touches 2 or more points on the graph of a relation

domain

All of the input or x values in a function

range

All of the output or y values in a function

quadrants

Four quarters that the coordinate graph is divided into

mapping

Illustrates how each element of the domain is paired with an element in the range

x-coordinate

The first number of an ordered pair

x-axis

The horizontal number line on a coordinate plane

zeros

The roots or x-intercepts of a quadratic function

continuous graph

a graph made up of connected lines or curves

discrete graph

a graph made up of distinct, or unconnected, points

function notation

an equation in the form of 'f(x)=' to show the output value of a function, f, for an input value x

arithmetic sequence formula

an=a1+(N-1)d

relation

any set of ordered pairs

common difference

the constant difference between consecutive terms in a sequence

origin

the point (0,0) where the x-axis and the y-axis intersect in a coordinate plane

y-coordinate

the second number in an ordered pair

y-axis

the vertical axis on a coordinate plane...top to bottom

input

the x-values (domain) of a relationship, the value substituted into an expression or function

output

the y-values (range) of a situation, The results of the operation of a formula.
