What is a PTCR ? How does it open the circuit to the start winding ?

the PTC relay is a solid state relay, that increases its resistance to current flow when it heats up . When the compressor motor starts there is full power through the PTCR to the start winding. Within a few seconds the current draw of the compressor heats up the ceramic disc inside the relay. Heat transforms the conducting properties of the disc to an insulator.
