Fort Duquesne
1758 beginning place of French and Indian War when Washington ran into fort; It was originally a British fort that the French seized before it was finished. It was the destination of George Washington before he was forced to retreat to Fort Necessity in 1754. It was the site of a great French victory over England's General Edward Braddock in 1755. The British retook it for good in 1758 and named it Fort Pitt. The importance of this fort site was that its holder gained control of three rivers: the Ohio, the Allegheny, and the Monongahela. Yes, Fort Duquesne was where Pittsburgh is today.

Dawes Severalty Act

Billion-Dollar Congress
1890 patronage and actual expense of fed govt had grown to reach this level of spending; Congress passed McKinley Tariff (Highest peacetime tax on imported goods at 50%) to cover costs of guilded age named for its lavish spendings, gave pensions to Civil War veterans, increased government purchases on silver, and passed the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890.

1892 in Carnegie's Homestead Steel plant, he left it under Henry Clay Frick's control, Frick pissed them off and the workers protested violently, Firck closed the plant in a "lockout", he hired 300 Pinkerton detectives who landed a barge at plant's dock on the Monongahela River, workers attack and 3 Pinks died and 3 workers kill; governor of Pennsylvania call out National Guard and workers give in after 5 months, some hired again and others "blacklisted" or placed on list to never by hired in steel industry again

1896 case about "separate but equal" facilities: Supreme Court case about Jim Crow railroad cars in Louisiana- Plessy sat in first class and kicked off, he sues them; the Court decided by 7 to 1 that legislation could not overcome racial attitudes, and that it was constitutional to have "separate but equal" facilities for blacks and whites; soon applied to schools, etc

1966 Ernesto Miranda arrested and coerced into confessing to kidnapping and rape of 18yr old woman; Supreme Court says original evidence had been circumstantial and conviction could not stand because Miranda was not informed of his rights to legal counsel; later, reconvicted on substantial evidence; named became verb "mirandize", police "mirandize" anyone being arrested by telling the person the rights results: Supreme Court held that criminal suspects must be informed of their right to consult with an attorney and of their right against self-incrimination prior to questioning by police.

Pack-the-Court Scheme
After his 1936 election, which FDR interpreted as a mandate from the people, FDR chafed under the continued resistance to his policies from the Supreme Court. Early in 1937 he submitted a plan to Congress to reorganize the court by increasing the number of judges from nine to as many as fifteen if those over the age of seventy failed to retire. The proposal met with sharp criticism and the accusation that FDR was merely trying to "pack" the Supreme Court with his allies and effectively end the checks and balances system. Reservation System

This was one of the most dramatic presidential elections and was fought between William Jennings Bryan (bimetallism) and William McKinley. It was also known as the battle of the standards, because it was primarily focused on the gold and silver standards of money, because economics were primarily the main concern during this election. McKinley was most popular in the Northeast, Upper Mid West, and the Pacific Coast while Bryan was strongest in the South, the rural mid west, and the Rocky Mountain areas. Even though Bryan lost the election, his ideas would place a role in prompting the economic programs in the future; in second term of McKinley, it was important as to who was his VP, Roosevelt and this meant end of Gilded Age
